Eventually their sleuthing leads them to discover that a member of the local Ski Patrol is in fact conducting a banned mining operation, to collect a rare element which disrupts electro-magnetic fields and thus shuts down power – the dynamite blasts in the mines have been causing the avalanches. The illegal operation is in cahoots with a visiting diplomat, who uses her diplomatic immunity to smuggle the mined element out of the country.
