Enrichment Day May 29, 2015 Session Descriptions These are the choices for Enrichment Day Seminars – 2015 Go over the list this evening to prepare your “Top Ten Choices” which you will need this Friday (May 1st) during lunch when you will fill out a separate form. Please bring this paper and a pencil or pen to lunch with you on Friday to fill out the form. EVERY STUDENT MUST FILL OUT A FORM OR IT WILL BE FILLED OUT FOR YOU. Needed by Monday if you are absent Friday. TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY SO YOU WILL HAVE YOUR BEST CHANCES OF GETTING YOUR FIRST CHOICES. 1. Act Up! – Is an acting role in your future? Fundamental concepts of drama are taught through exercises and improvisation. Karen Cantor will explain some basic techniques of stage acting. 2. Biggest Loser – Dr. Glenn Forrester, a surgeon who specializes in Bariatric Surgery (stomach size reduction) will discuss what it takes to become a surgeon, healthy living, and how video games have helped his career. 3. Blown Away, Union County Bomb Squad – Union County’s finest will come with their truck and a robot and show how they detonate a package. This class is a blast! 4. Brush Strokes – Rupa Kale from Bottle and Bottega studio will teach you how to replicate a masterpiece from scratch as well as starting your own small business. 5. Chemical Reaction – This dynamic scientist will explain how DNA is used in research & how new pharmaceuticals are discovered. You will extract DNA from wheat germ! 6. Chocolate, Chocolate & More Chocolate, Mrs. Faillace– Learn how to make chocolate lollipops, peanut butter cups, chocolate dipped pretzels, and more! (Students with food allergies should not attend.) 7. Comedy Central – Mr. Steve Grimes, Comedy Central Executive will explain how TV shows get made, what is changing in the world of iPads and how Comedy Central uses social media to reach fans and create hit shows like Key & Peele, Tosh.0, South Park, Workaholics, Broad City and the Roast of Justin Bieber. 8. Creating Cosmetics – Have you ever wondered how lipstick or blush is made? Meet Mr. Paul Thau, retired L’Oreal and Revlon Cosmetology Pharmacist who will discuss how make up is developed and produced, what a career in cosmetology is like and new and innovative trends in the world of beauty products. 9. C.S.I., Union County CSI Unit– Learn how to investigate at a Crime Scene, just like the popular TV show, and hear about processing evidence, photographing the scene & documenting the information for the investigators. 10. Design Time – Have you ever wondered who designed the Barclays Center in Brooklyn? Was building with Legos one of your favorite pastimes? Vail Rooney, an Architect with Shop, in NYC, will talk about Virtual Designing and Modeling for high end interiors, public works, residential, commercial and institutional buildings. 11. Emergency! – Do you have what it takes to become a Fire Fighter? Captain Hopkins of the Berkeley Heights Fire Department will talk about the requirements and training needed to fight fires. 12. EnGuarde!, Fencing - An exciting introduction to the sport of fencing including a demonstration with all three weapons. GL Fencing Coach Michael Wang and Coach Ellen Hewett will also teach the intricacies of footwork. 13. Eye in the Sky! WABC –TV, Traffic – Meet Heather O’Rourke from WABC-TV’s “Eyewitness News This Morning”, who will discuss her position as the morning traffic anchor. Learn how to deliver traffic updates like the pros. 14. Flying Flags - GL Color Guard – Current members of the GL Color Guard will introduce what they do as part of the Highlander Marching Band, give a brief demonstration and give some hands-on small group instruction. 15. For the Love of Music – Have you ever thought of a career in music? Meet Adrienne Ostrander and Jamie Baer Peterson from the Wharton School of Music, who will discuss what it takes to succeed in a musical career. 16. Fore!, Union County Golf - Learn the fundamentals of golf, practice your swing, have some fun! 17. From Cleats to Cops – Come meet Patrolman Affinito and Patrolman Deitch of the Berkeley Heights Police Department and hear about how they went from playing for a professional baseball team and a college football team to joining the police force. 18. Game, Set, Match – Tennis with Phil Rankine, an introduction into the fundamentals of tennis along with a demonstration. See how you match up to a pro. 19. Graphic Design – Are you interested in graphic art? Your opinion counts! Explore the creative process of graphic design through logos, websites, & brochures. 20. Haz-Mat, Union County – Learn about the day-to-day duties & incidents, & the required training of the Hazardous Materials Unit. Horse Whisperer – Learn about career opportunities with horses including horsemanship & dealing with problem horses. Live horse demonstrations! Joe and Collette Williams of Skyler’s Acres. 22. Humvee & US Army – Learn about opportunities in the US Army and tour a real live Humvee. 23. Icing on the Cookie – Do you like to watch the Food Network? Do you like to bake and eat scrumptious treats? Learn how to professionally decorate delicious cookies with Karen Campos, from “Karen’s Cookies”. How sweet it is! 24. Inside Edition – Reality TV Explained – TV Producer, Mr. Aaron Butkas of Storyville Entertainment Inc. will introduce students to the behind the scenes experiences of reality television and the business end of why this genre has become so popular. Mr. Butkas has produced such shows as Make Me a Supermodel, Growing Up Gotti and Whose Wedding is it Anyway. 25. J-E-T-S! Sports Merchandising/NY Jets - Do you love sports and a flair for promotions? Chris Pierce, Senior Director of Fan Commerce for the NY Jets will speak about the merchandising aspect of promoting the NY Jets. 26. Karate Kid – Darren DeMarco of White Tiger Dojo will speak about personal space, safety and the importance of controlling one’s surroundings through the mastery of Martial Arts. 27. Kickin’ It – New York Red Bulls – Do you love soccer? Do you dream of making your passion into a career? Come meet Thomas Moriarty, from the Red Bulls Soccer Academy and learn the business of training young athletes while you pick up a few tricks of your own. 28. Law & Order – Come meet Mr. John Esmerado, Union County Assistant Prosecutor, to learn about the prosecutor’s role in law enforcement. Discussion will include the study of crime patterns, preparing witnesses for trial and developing new methods to prevent and stop crime. 29. Project Runway – Do you know the difference between silk and satin? Do you follow current fashions trends? Meet Gita Omri Brown, a high-end fashion designer who will discuss the highs and lows of making it in the fashion world. 30. Rescue Me – Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad – Learn basic life saving techniques with the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad. Enjoy a tour of the EMS truck and learn how to become a volunteer member of the Rescue Squad. 31. Rita’s Italian Ice – Who doesn’t love Italian Ice? Have you ever wondered how they come up with new and exciting flavors and products? Come meet Bridget Neigel, owner of Rita’s Italian Ice in Berkeley Heights, and learn about owning a franchise, what goes into running your own business, Rita’s products and how products and flavors are chosen. Samples for everyone! 32. Say it with Sign - American Sign Language is becoming a fast-growing interest to people all over the world. Ms. Elizabeth Schank-Rezach shares her talents of basic sign language through interactive games & activities. 33. Secret Agent Man – What is the FBI & what do agents do? Special Agent Martin Feely will present an overview of the Federal Bureau of Investigations and discuss criminal, counterterrorism and counterintelligence investigations. 34. Skills & Drills, Gabriele Fitness – What does it take to be a personal trainer and how do you keep yourself and your clients motivated? Chris DeGeorge and Matt Carbone will explain it all and run you though a quick workout. 35. Slap Shot – Are you a Devils or Rangers fan? Are you interested in playing hockey for Governor Livingston? Come meet Matt Anderson, GL Varsity Hockey Coach and Hockey Director at Union Sport Arena. 36. Snoop Dogz, – Learn about the K-9 program, including training and working with the dogs. View a live demonstration! 37. Soups On! – Calling all cooks! Nicole Mauriello from Sancoche Soups will teach you how she turned the love of cooking into a thriving soup business. Bring your appetite. (Students with food allergies should not attend.) 38. So You Think You Can Dance? – Ms. Dana Millette and Ms. Lindsay Doris from Pure Movement Dance Center will talk about the background of choreography and owning your own dance studio. You will learn a fun dance choreographed to a popular song. 39. S.W.A.T. – Sergeant Ernie Schmidt and Officer Ryan Peters from the SWAT unit will discuss a career in law enforcement as well as describe the specialized S.W.A.T team unit; weapons, tactics, training & qualifications. Their specialized armored vehicle will be on-site. 40. What’s Cooking? – Learn how to run your own restaurant, become a chef, and cook a delicious pasta dish with Mr. Anthony Clemente from Clemente’s Restaurant and Strega! (Students with food allergies should not attend.) 41. X Games Extraordinaire –Can you flip off a wall or jump over railings? Come meet the owner and instructor of Free Running, Parkour, and learn how participants use their environment, their bodies and their surroundings to propel themselves, negotiating obstacles along their way.
