February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. • Stephen Colbert's Super PAC and the Growing Role of Comedy in Our
STEPHEN COLBERT’S SUPER PAC AND THE GROWING ROLE OF COMEDY IN OUR POLITICAL DISCOURSE BY MELISSA CHANG, SCHOOL OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS ADVISER: CHRIS EDELSON, PROFESSOR IN THE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS UNIVERSITY HONORS IN CLEG SPRING 2012 Dedicated to Professor Chris Edelson for his generous support and encouragement, and to Professor Lauren Feldman who inspired my capstone with her course on “Entertainment, Comedy, and Politics”. Thank you so, so much! 2 | C h a n g STEPHEN COLBERT’S SUPER PAC AND THE GROWING ROLE OF COMEDY IN OUR POLITICAL DISCOURSE Abstract: Comedy plays an increasingly legitimate role in the American political discourse as figures such as Stephen Colbert effectively use humor and satire to scrutinize politics and current events, and encourage the public to think more critically about how our government and leaders rule. In his response to the Supreme Court case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (2010) and the rise of Super PACs, Stephen Colbert has taken the lead in critiquing changes in campaign finance. This study analyzes segments from The Colbert Report and the Colbert Super PAC, identifying his message and tactics. This paper aims to demonstrate how Colbert pushes political satire to new heights by engaging in real life campaigns, thereby offering a legitimate voice in today’s political discourse. INTRODUCTION While political satire is not new, few have mastered this art like Stephen Colbert, whose originality and influence have catapulted him to the status of a pop culture icon. Never breaking character from his zany, blustering persona, Colbert has transformed the way Americans view politics by using comedy to draw attention to important issues of the day, critiquing and unpacking these issues in a digestible way for a wide audience.

  • Postfeminism and Urban Space Oddities in Broad City." Space Oddities: Difference and Identity in the American City
Lahm, Sarah. "'Yas Queen': Postfeminism and Urban Space Oddities in Broad City." Space Oddities: Difference and Identity in the American City. Ed. Stefan L. Brandt and Michael Fuchs. Vienna: LIT Verlag, 2018. 161-177. ISBN 978-3-643-50797-6 (pb). "VAS QUEEN": POSTFEMINISM AND URBAN SPACE ODDITIES IN BROAD CITY SARAH LAHM Broad City's (Comedy Central, since 2014) season one episode "Working Girls" opens with one of the show's most iconic scenes: In the show's typical fashion, the main characters' daily routines are displayed in a split screen, as the scene underline the differ ences between the characters of Abbi and Ilana and the differ ent ways in which they interact with their urban environment. Abbi first bonds with an older man on the subway because they are reading the same book. However, when he tries to make ad vances, she rejects them and gets flipped off. In clear contrast to Abbi's experience during her commute to work, Ilana intrudes on someone else's personal space, as she has fallen asleep on the subway and is leaning (and drooling) on a woman sitting next to her (who does not seem to care). Later in the day, Abbi ends up giving her lunch to a homeless person who sits down next to her on a park bench, thus fitting into her role as the less assertive, more passive of the two main characters. Meanwhile, Ilana does not have lunch at all, but chooses to continue sleeping in the of ficebathroom, in which she smoked a joint earlier in the day.

IRONIC FEMINISM: RHETORICAL CRITIQUE IN SATIRICAL NEWS A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Kathy Elrick December 2016 Accepted by Dr. David Blakesley, Committee Chair Dr. Jeff Love Dr. Brandon Turner Dr. Victor J. Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S.

  • Roots Report: an Interview with Weird Al
Roots Report: An Interview with Weird Al Okee dokee folks… Almost exactly one year ago I saw Weird Al Yankovic at the Zeiterion in New Bedford. In all honesty it was one of the BEST shows I have EVER seen. It was fun, funny, energetic … basically AWESOME! I had a grin on my face the whole time. Weird Al is a comical/musical genius. I know a lot of you will scoff at this and probably think what he does is easy. It’s not, but he makes it seem that way as he effortlessly genre-shifts and works lyrical magic with the lampoons. Weird Al is bringing his Mandatory Fun Show to the Providence Performing Arts Center on September 14, and I had the opportunity to talk to him about his tour, music and upcoming show. Before I did the interview I asked folks on Facebook what they would like to know about Al, and I based my all of questions on those responses. John Fuzek: What was your favorite video to film? Weird Al: Probably “Tacky” (a parody of “Happy” by Pharrell Williams). It was also one of the easier videos to film because it was all done in one shot. Once we had the DP and the crew rehearsed, my celebrity friends came in. We told them where their marks were, everybody was professional and we knocked it out in a couple of hours. It was great. I got to work with some of the funniest people I know: Jack Black, Aisha Tyler, Kristen Schaal, Margaret Cho and Eric Stonestreet … you know, they’re in my address book.

  • Update to Comments of Internet Association
Before the United States Copyright Office Washington, D.C. In re: Section 512 Study: May 9, 2019 Notice and Request for Public Comment Docket No. USCO-2015-7 UPDATE TO COMMENTS OF INTERNET ASSOCIATION Internet Association appreciates the opportunity to update its April 2016 comments1 on the Copyright Office’s study of Section 512 of the Copyright Act. The U.S. copyright system has a strong and innovation-oriented copyright framework that benefits consumers, protects creators’ rights, and enables innovation – including through the safe harbors and limitations and exceptions in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Internet Association (IA) represents over 40 of the world’s leading internet companies.2 IA is the only trade association that exclusively represents leading global internet companies on matters of public policy. IA’s mission is to foster innovation, promote economic growth, and empower people through the free and open internet. IA member companies are leading licensees, distributors and creators of copyrighted works, as well as platforms that allow people to distribute and share the copyrighted works they have created. IA filed comments with the U.S. Copyright Office (the Office) in 2016 in response to its request for comments and participated in the public round tables held by the Office in the same year. IA has consistently held the position that Section 512 creates a balanced system that supports diverse stakeholders, providing rights holders, creators, internet companies, technology industries, and users the tools necessary to grow a robust online ecosystem. The DMCA safe harbors have achieved the goal3 established by stakeholders and policy makers: the internet has survived and thrived, benefiting creators, the public, and internet companies.
