Remembering Vin Martin

The life of the late former Jamaica Honorary Consul to Atlanta and chair of the Atlanta-Montego Bay Sister City Committee, Vin Martin, was celebrated at a Service of Remembrance and Thanks- giving, held at the Springfield Baptist Church in Conyers, Georgia, on Friday, August 1, 2014. It was through Vin Martin’s efforts that Atlanta and Montego Bay became sister cities, giving birth to closer economic exchanges and philanthropic activities between the two cities. Among Mar- tin's greatest contributions was the key role he played in the formation and operation of the Atlanta-Montego Bay Sister Cities Health Mission, which for many years provided, and continues to provide, a variety of well-needed medical services to the poor and needy in Jamaica's tourism gateway. Under his leadership, the health mission served thousands of underserved individuals in Montego Bay and contributed goods and services valued at thousands of U.S. dollars. A prominent Atlanta attorney, Martin was consul general from 1997 to 2013. He was recognized by the Atlanta consular corps and the leaders of the Caribbean organizations in 2013 for his work as a diplomat. For his contribution to Jamaicans in the Dias- pora, Martin was presented with the Order of Distinction in 2013. He has also received the Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation and the Governor General’s Achievement Award for Contribution to the Diaspora. At the 1st Annual Sister Cities International Diplomatic Gala in Washington D.C. on March 10th, 2015, Sister Cities International honored Vin Martin for his support of citizen diplomacy and peacebuilding with a Global Citizen Diplomat Award, accepted by his widow, Hazel Martin, amid a gathering of diplomats, mem- bers of Congress, municipal officials, and community and citizen leaders. The Global Citizen Diplomat Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional support of Sister Cities Interna- tional’s mission: to promote peace through mutual respect, un- derstanding, and cooperation—one individual, one community at a time. The Atlanta Montego Bay sister city committee has renamed their health mission, ‘The Vin Martin Memorial Health Mission’.
