  • Read a Montreal Gazette Story from April 2006
Learning today. Leading tomorrow. Notable Vanier Alumni Otis Grant takes swing at second chance By Herb Zurkowsky, Montreal Gazette April 3, 2006 It has been almost seven years since the night Otis Grant was nearly robbed of his life, and certainly lost the prime years of his professional boxing career. Time has helped erode, if not erase, the memory. "I try not to think about that," he said. "What's in the past should remain in the past." What might have been had he not been driving south on Highway 15, near St. Jerome, Que., on that warm, late spring night in June 1999, meeting another car travelling in the wrong direction? Grant swerved, taking the brunt of the impact on his side to spare his two passengers: daughter Alexandria and fellow boxer Herc Kyvelos. His passengers escaped unscathed, but Grant fractured five ribs, punctured a lung and shattered his shoulder blade. He remained in a coma for seven days. According to doctors, his excellent condition won Grant his life, but after awakening, he was told he'd never again fight. Grant had lost his World Boxing Organization middleweight title six months earlier to Roy Jones, but his prospects seemed bright. Grant's contract with promoter Art Pelullo was nearing an end. He had become a sparring partner for Jones and there was talk of him joining Jones' stable, which certainly would have boosted Grant's career. Learning today. Leading tomorrow. Notable Vanier Alumni "Things could have happened ... the possibilities were tremendous," Grant said. "But I also know there's a lot of BS in this business.

In Part 1, we discuss various advances in generation of high energy pulsed THz radiation, a spectral regime uniquely effective at accelerating electrons but histori- cally lacking in efficient sources. In particular, through various improvements to the grating-based tilted pulse front (TPF) technique, we demonstrate a record conver- sion efficiency of 1%.

Learning today. Leading tomorrow. Notable Vanier Alumni Boxer Otis Grant Comeback Man Hit me with your best shot By Richard, Hour Magazine October 27th, 2005 Otis "Magic" Grant rises from car-crash coma to become WBC super-middleweight contender. Driving back home to Montreal on Highway 15 on a hot summer's evening in June 1999, Otis Grant - who'd lost his World a Boxing Organization middleweight title just six months earlier - began the biggest fight of his life the moment a pair of headlights drove straight for his car. "The car was coming right towards us, going north in the south lane, so I swerved my car so [the oncoming vehicle] wouldn't hit the passenger side where Herc [fellow boxer Hercules Kyvelos] and my daughter [then-six-year-old Alexandria] were," Grant recalls today. "I took the hit." Grant continues, "When I awoke we were on the shoulder of the highway and I told Herc to get my daughter out of the car. Then he got me out of the car, called 911, and we were put in three different ambulances. I kept asking, 'Where's my daughter?' I remember screaming for my daughter in the [hospital] emergency room. When a nurse told me my daughter was all right and safe, I let myself go. I woke up seven days later from a coma." Grant broke five ribs, punctured a lung and shattered his shoulder blade. Doctors said he'd never fight again. But Grant (37-2-1, 17 KOs) surprised everybody by returning to the ring in 2003 and is now just two fights away from completing his unbelievable return to the top of the boxing world, the sport 18th- century British boxing champ James Figg famously coined "The manly art of self-defence." Learning today.
