It is our vision to be a truly evangelizing parish, one in which all parishioners enter into a closer relationship with Christ, that they share the Good News of His kingdom with others, that they participate actively as members of the parish family, and that they reach out to those in need.

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. (Ps 118

He is Risen – Death, Covid-19 Pandemic, You Shall Die.

What kind of Easter Sunday is this? Easter will feel different this year. We were looking forward to Easter dinner with family and friends. Some of us would process with the Alleluia banners we buried at the beginning of Lent. Some of us would delight in watching our children and grandchildren hunt for Easter eggs. There will be chocolate Easter bunnies, especially appealing if you gave up chocolate for Lent. We are all geared up for our Easter celebration, both in church and at home. We would be gathering as church families to celebrate the best and boldest news ever told: "The tomb is empty! Death is undone! Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed!” Well, the Good News has not changed. But the world around us has. God in Jesus does not change. This year, most of us will not gather in person on Easter. We will celebrate online. But the fear, sorrow and shock we feel in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic will stay with us. What does it mean to celebrate resurrection when people near and far are dying by the thousands? What good can it do to say the tomb is empty when mortuaries are at capacity, and mourners cannot gather to bury their dead? Over these past few weeks, the coronavirus has killed many people all over the world. We have seen death exceeding all boundaries. This year we all have to remember this sentence in the saint John’s Gospel “While it was still dark.” In John’s version of the story, discovers the empty tomb before sunrise, while it is still dark. The first Easter morning as a time “when it was hard to be sure what you were seeing.” Early in the morning, while it was still dark, that’s where Easter begins. In confusion, in darkness that is where death is undone, Christ is risen. There is so much about the resurrection that we don’t know. What we do know is that somehow, in an an- cient tomb on a starry night, God worked in secret to bring life out of death. Somehow, in the complete dark- ness, God saved the world. Jesus said to Mary Magdalene twice, “Why are you weeping?” What is it that we have lost? What is breaking our heart? Why are we weeping? Are we weeping for someone who has died of the Covid-19 pandemic? Are we sad because we’ve lost our ? Are we in tears because the world has changed? Are we sad because we miss the weekly Mass, the comforts of the church, the Body and Blood of Jesus “the Eucharist”, the communi- ty? Are we crying because we are lonely and in lockdown? Yes, the grave is empty, this sorrow is not forever, and coronavirus is not forever. The same Jesus who conquered death is still here, with us and among us. Yes, Easter will feel different this year. Faith in the resurrection isn’t simply a claim about our future status, after we die. It is a demonstration about who God is and how God works. It is about our God, who makes new life where there has been death. The tomb is empty because Jesus Christ is risen from the dead! And that’s not the end of the story, it has only just begun!

Today and every day, let us not doubt, let us not be perplexed. Let us instead peer deep inside the empty tomb, and believe. Alleluia…Alleluia…Alleluia HE HAS RISEN!

From all of us here at Saint William’s parish, priests, deacons, and our entire staff, we pray for you and your families and loved ones, a blessed and hope-filled Easter.

With heartfelt gratitude, we also thank the choirs, cantors, ushers, greeters, decorators, acolytes and altar servers, religious educators, Holy Communion and Word Ministers and our staff of workers for their dedicated and loving service to our parish. We are indeed blessed with such selfless and loving followers of Christ.

Easter tells us life is stronger than death, love can overcome hate, goodness ultimately triumphs over evil and eternity with God in Heaven are our destiny. May God’s love and peace fill our hearts, our lives, our homes and our families. May the Resurrection of Christ bring healing to us and our world! I love you and I miss you! Stay safe and healthy! Happy Easter!
