(Berggrunds- morfologiska studier över kustslätten och Norrlandsterrängen inom delar av Umeå kommun, norra Norrland). Swedish text with a summary in English. Karel Miskovsky, The Department of Geography, University of Umeå, Sweden. ABSTRACT The aim of this studv is to investigate interrelationships between bedrock relief and geological material. The area of investigation 2 covers ca 350 km and is located in the Prec ambrian bedrock in the central part of Umeå commune, in northern Norrland. The boundary between two morphologically different types of landscape, the coastal plain (kustslätten) and the Norrland terrain (Norrlands terrängen), crosses this area in a north-westerly direction. The study area's Precambrian bedrock has been mapped in detail by the author and the results are presented in a map at the scale of 1:50,000 together with a description. The occurring rock types have been studied with regard to their resistance against physical and chemical weathering. By relating recent research experience con cerning Fennoscandia's palaeogeography, palaeoclimatology and isostasy, an appreciation is given of the character and strength of the forces of disintegration. Accordingly, it seems probable that chemical weathering was the dominant phenomenon during Silurian, Devonian, and even Carboniferous and Permian, whereas when the climate worsened sig nificantly after the Tertiary period Fennoscandia's landscape was resculptured by glacial forces. During Tertiary and Quarternary times , Pennoscandia was twice uplifted and once lowered Statistical correlations between landscape relief, bedrock structure and rock variat ions, show that the highest sections of the landscape are dominated by resistant older gra nitoids, granitic mobilizate and veined gneisses, whereas the low-lying valleys and plains are characterized by the easily weathered biotite-plagioclase schists. Much suggests that the distinctive morphology of the coastal plain and Norrland terrain was initiated by bedrock structure and rock variations. As in some earlier works on Fennoscandia, this study attributes great importance to selective weathering in shaping the landscape. Large-scale rock slope failures in the eastern Pyrenees: identifying a sparse but significant population in paraglacial and parafluvial contexts David Jarman1, Marc Calvet2, Jordi Corominas3, Magali Delmas2, Yanni Gunnell4 1 Mountain Landform Research, Scotland 2 University of Perpignan, CNRS UMR 7194, France 3 Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain 4 University of Lyon, CNRS UMR 5600, France ABSTRACT This first overview of large-scale rock slope failure (RSF) in the Pyrenees addresses the eastern third of the range. Around 30 principal RSFs >0.25 km2 and 20 lesser or uncertain cases have been identified from remote imagery and groundtruthing. Compared with other European mountain ranges, RSF incidence is relatively sparse, displays no obvious regional trend or spatial clustering, and occurs across diverse landscape types, if mainly on metamorphic rocks. A transition is observed from paraglacial RSFs in formerly-glaciated valleys to what are here termed ‘parafluvial’ RSFs, within wholly or mainly fluvial valleys but where slope failure is not directly provoked by or linked to river erosion. RSFs are particularly found in three topographic settings: (i) at cirque and trough-head thresholds (transition zones of elevated instability between cirque and main glaciated trough walls); (ii) near the upper or outer periphery of the ice field, where glacial adaptation of fluvial valleys is incomplete; and (iii) in fluvial valleys beyond glacial limits where incision is locally intense. RSF is absent from the range divide, from within cirques, and from most main valleys. In the montane areas, RSF is strongly associated with vestiges of preglacial summit surfaces, confirming that plateau ridges are less stable than sharpened crests and horns.

Block fields in southern Norway: Significance for the Late Weichselian ice sheet ATLE NESJE, SVEIN OLAF DAHL, EINAR ANDA & NORALF RYE Nesje, A., Dahl, S. 0., Anda, E. & Rye, N.: Block fields in southern Norway: Significance for the Late Weichselian ice sheet. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 68, pp. 149-169. Oslo 1988. ISSN 0029-196X. The geographical and altitudinal distribution of block fields and trimlines in southern Norway are discussed in relation to the vertical extent of the continental ice sheet during the Late Weichselian glacial maximum. Inferred from these considenitions and formerly presented ice-sheet phases for the last glaciation in southern Norway, a new model on the Late Weichselian ice sheet is presented. This mod el indicates a low-gradient, poly-centred ice sheet during maximum glaciation with the ice divide zone located eiose to the present main watershed. During the deglaciation, the margin of the ice sheet retreated to the coast and fjord areas of western Norway. This induced a backward lowering of the iee-sheet surface, and the culmination zones in areas with low pass-points between eastern and western parts of southem Norway thus migrated E/SE ofthe present main watershed. During maximum glaciation the are as of greatest relative ice thickness were located to the central lowland areas of eastern Norway, to the Trøndelag region, and along the deeper fjords of western Norway. All known reports of deep weathering in Norway have been reviewed and registered in a GIS database. We have selected four representative locations for more detailed studies in southern Norway (Kjose, Lista, Vågsøy-Stad and Inderøya) and another four locations in northern Norway (Vestvågøya, Hadseløya, Andøya and Hamarøya). Geophysical studies (2D resisitivity and refraction seismic) reveal fairly continuous saprolite layers with a thickness up to 100 metres in Vestfold (Kjose), Lofoten- Vesterålen, Hamarøya and Varangerhalvøya. The results also show that the degree of weathering varies extensively over short distances.

NORWEGIAN JOURNAL OF GEOLOGY Deep weathering, neotectonics and strandflat formation in Nordland, northern Norway 189 Deep weathering, neotectonics and strandflat formation in Nordland, northern Norway Odleiv Olesen, Halfdan Pascal Kierulf, Marco Brönner, Einar Dalsegg, Ola Fredin & Terje Solbakk Olesen, O., Kierulf, H.P., Brönner, M., Dalsegg, E., Fredin, O. & Solbakk, T.: Deep weathering, neotectonics and strandflat formation in Nordland, northern Norway. Norwegian Journal of Geology, Vol 93, pp. 189–213. Trondheim 2013, ISSN 029-196X. The strandflat area of Nordland is a region with frequent deep weathering and increased seismic activity. We argue that there is a causal relationship between the phenomena. We have carried out chemical and geophysical studies of the weathering and measured the tectonic strain using the GPS method. A parallel and shallow zone of increased seismicity along the coast largely reflecting extensional stress has previously been mapped. New GPS data and previous datasets such as DInSAR, repeated levelling and focal plane solutions indicate that the outer Ranafjorden area is under E–W extension and subsidence. In 1998–1999, a local seismic network detected earthquake clusters along N–S-trending fracture zones. An irregular relative subsidence pattern on the order of 1 mm yr-1 has previously been recorded on InSAR–PS data. During the period 1999–2008, GPS stations to the west of the earthquakes moved c. 1 mm yr-1 to the NW relative to GPS stations to the east. Deeply weathered bedrock occurs around Vest- fjorden and southwards to Ranafjorden. Electrical resistivity profiling reveals weathered bedrock extending to 20–100 m depth over large areas.

  • Detrital Thermochronometry Reveals That the Topography Along the Antarctic Peninsula Is Not a Pleistocene Landscape
RESEARCH ARTICLE Detrital Thermochronometry Reveals That the 10.1029/2019JF005447 Topography Along the Antarctic Peninsula Key Points: • Major topographic change initiated is Not a Pleistocene Landscape ‐ ~30 12 Ma ago at Bourgeois Fjord, Anna E. Clinger1,2 , Matthew Fox3, Greg Balco2, Kurt Cuffey1,4, and David L. Shuster1,2 Antarctica Peninsula • The timing of topographic change 1Department of Earth and Planetary Science, University of California, Berkeley, CA, USA, 2Berkeley Geochronology was likely in response to the onset of 3 4 alpine glaciation and not in response Center, Berkeley, CA, USA, Department of Earth Sciences, University College London, London, UK, Department of to Plio‐Pleistocene cooling Geography, University of California, Berkeley, CA, USA • Sediment sourcing scenarios scaled by ice velocity cannot completely describe the detrital distribution of Abstract Using offshore detrital apatite (U‐Th)/He thermochronometry and 3D thermo‐kinematic (U‐Th)/He ages modeling of the catchment topography, we constrain the timing of major topographic change at Bourgeois Fjord, Antarctic Peninsula (AP). While many mid‐latitude glacial landscapes developed primarily Supporting Information: fi ‐ • in response to global cooling over the last ~2.6 Ma, we nd that kilometer scale landscape evolution at Supporting Information S1 – • Table S1 Bourgeois Fjord began ~30 12 Ma ago and <2 km of valley incision has occurred since ~16 Ma. This early • Table S2 onset of major topographic change occurred following the initiation of alpine glaciation at this location and prior to the development of a regional polythermal ice sheet inferred from sedimentary evidence offshore of the AP. We hypothesize that topographic change relates to (i) feedbacks between an evolving Correspondence to: topography and glacial erosion processes, (ii) effects of glacial‐interglacial variability, and (iii) the prevalence A.
