THE ANASON FAMILY IN ROGALAND COUNTY, NORWAY AND JUNEAU COUNTY, WISCONSIN BY LAWRENCE W. ONSAGER THE LEMONWEIR VALLEY PRESS Berrien Springs, Michigan and Mauston, Wisconsin 2013 ANASON FAMILY INTRODUCTION The Anason family has its roots in Rogaland County, in western Norway. Western Norway is the area which had the greatest emigration to the United States. The County of Rogaland, formerly named Stavanger, lies at Norway’s southwestern tip, with the North Sea washing its fjords, beaches and islands. The name Rogaland means “the land of the Ryger,” an old Germanic tribe. The Ryger tribe is believed to have settled there 2,000 years ago. The meaning of the tribal name is uncertain. Rogaland was called Rygiafylke in the Viking age. The earliest known members of the Anason family came from a region of Rogaland that has since become part of Vest-Agder County.

The municipality of Farsund has ca. 9.200 inhabitants, mainly concentrated on three centres of population - Farsund town, Vanse and Vestbygda. It also includes the outlying districts of Lista, Herad and Spind. Shipping, fishing and agriculture have been the main industries in the area. Today Farsund is the largest agrcultural district in the county of Vest-Agder, having 26 km2 productive land, 88 km2 forest and 17 k m2 freshwater areas. Farsund was already recognized as a trading centre in 1795, and in 1995 celebrated its 200-years jubilee with town status. Vanse: was formerly the largest centre of population in the district. Today it has 2.500 inhabitants, and some of the council offices are still situated there. Vestbygda: is built round the only harbour of any size in a particularly exposed stretch of the coast. There was a considerable emigration to the United States from this region in former times.

  • Large-Scale Rock Slope Failures in the Eastern Pyrenees: Identifying a Sparse but Significant Population in Paraglacial and Parafluvial Contexts
Large-scale rock slope failures in the eastern Pyrenees: identifying a sparse but significant population in paraglacial and parafluvial contexts David Jarman1, Marc Calvet2, Jordi Corominas3, Magali Delmas2, Yanni Gunnell4 1 Mountain Landform Research, Scotland 2 University of Perpignan, CNRS UMR 7194, France 3 Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain 4 University of Lyon, CNRS UMR 5600, France ABSTRACT This first overview of large-scale rock slope failure (RSF) in the Pyrenees addresses the eastern third of the range. Around 30 principal RSFs >0.25 km2 and 20 lesser or uncertain cases have been identified from remote imagery and groundtruthing. Compared with other European mountain ranges, RSF incidence is relatively sparse, displays no obvious regional trend or spatial clustering, and occurs across diverse landscape types, if mainly on metamorphic rocks. A transition is observed from paraglacial RSFs in formerly-glaciated valleys to what are here termed ‘parafluvial’ RSFs, within wholly or mainly fluvial valleys but where slope failure is not directly provoked by or linked to river erosion. RSFs are particularly found in three topographic settings: (i) at cirque and trough-head thresholds (transition zones of elevated instability between cirque and main glaciated trough walls); (ii) near the upper or outer periphery of the ice field, where glacial adaptation of fluvial valleys is incomplete; and (iii) in fluvial valleys beyond glacial limits where incision is locally intense. RSF is absent from the range divide, from within cirques, and from most main valleys. In the montane areas, RSF is strongly associated with vestiges of preglacial summit surfaces, confirming that plateau ridges are less stable than sharpened crests and horns.

  • Western Karmøy, an Integral Part of the Precambrian Basement of South Norway
WESTERN KARMØY, AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE PRECAMBRIAN BASEMENT OF SOUTH NORWAY TOR BIRKELAND Birkeland, T.: Western Karmøy, an integral part of the Precambrian basement of south Norway. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 55, pp. 213-241. Oslo 1975. Geologically, the western side of Karmøy differs greatly from the eastern one, but has until recently been considered to be contemporaneous with the latter, i.e. of Caledonian age and origin. The rocks of western Karmøy often have a distinctly granitoid appearance, but both field geological studies and labora tory work indicate that most of them are in fact metamorphosed arenaceous rudites which have been subjected to strong regional metamorphism under PT conditions that correspond to the upper stability field of the amphibolite facies, whereas the Cambro-Ordovician rocks of the Haugesund-Bokn area to the east have been metamorphosed under the physical conditions of the green schist facies. From the general impression of lithology, structure, and meta morphic grade, the author advances the hypothesis that the rocks of western Karmøy should be related to a Precambrian event rather than to rock-forming processes that took place during the Caledonian orogeny. T. Birkeland, Liang 6, Auklend, 4000 Stavanger, Norway. Previous investigations The first detailed description of the rocks of western Karmøy was given by Reusch in his pioneer work from 1888. Discussing the mode of development of these rocks, he seems to have inclined to the opinion that the so-called 'quartz augen gneiss' and the other closely related rocks represent regionally metamorphosed clastic sediments. Additional information of the rocks con cerned is found in his paper from 1913.

  • Morphology and Pattern of Quaternary Sedimentation in the North Sea Basin
1 1 Morphology and Pattern of Quaternary Sedimentation in the North Sea Basin 2 (52-62°N) 3 4 Ottesen, D.1, Batchelor, C.L.2, Dowdeswell, J.A.2, Løseth, H.3 5 6 1 Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), Postboks 6315 Sluppen, Trondheim, N-7491, 7 Norway; 2Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, Cambridge CB2 1ER, 8 UK; 3Statoil, Arkitekt Ebbels vei, 7053, Ranheim, Norway. 9 10 Abstract 11 The Quaternary North Sea Basin, which extends from northwest mainland Europe in the 12 south (52°N) to the Norwegian Sea in the north (62°N), contains a thick (up to 1 km) 13 sedimentary succession that records the changing nature of sediment supply from 14 surrounding land areas during the last c.2.6 Ma. We use an extensive 2D and 3D seismic 15 database to correlate major Quaternary seismo-stratigraphic surfaces and units across the 16 North Sea and reconstruct the broad-scale infill pattern of the entire Quaternary North Sea 17 Basin. The total volume of Quaternary sediments in the North Sea (350,000 km²) is c.140,000 18 km3, while the area inside the 500 m contour of the base-Quaternary surface has a volume of 19 109,000 km3. Two largely independent depocentres developed in the North Sea Basin during 20 the early Quaternary: the southern and central sub-basin was infilled by shelf fluvio-deltaic 21 and prodeltaic sediments delivered from the east and south-east, whilst the northern sub-basin 22 was infilled mainly by prograding glacigenic debris-flows deposited from an ice mass centred 23 on the Norwegian mainland.
