Halyna Ostapchuk Librarian Over the course of the past year, the library at St Vladimir Institute has acquired dozens of new books on Ukraine, Ukrainian Canadiana, and related topics. Here are some highlights from a few of these new titles: In October, SVI resident alumnus Dr. Bilenky, presented his new book, Imperial Urbanism in the Borderlands: , 1800–1905, published by University of Toronto Press. Based on extensive archival work, Dr. Bilenky delivers a new understanding of the development of Ukraine’s capital over the course of the 19th century. Presented in an illustrative album format, Nash herb: ukrains’ki symvoly vid kniazhykh chashiv do s’ohodennia, by Andriy Hrechylo and Bohdan Zavitiy, was published in Kyiv this October by Rodovid Press. It provides an informative and erudite survey complete with beautiful visuals of Ukrainian national emblems from Kyivan Rus’ times to the present day, including the trident, the golden lion, and others. Among the illustrations are color photographs of the Toronto and London study and vivid chronicle, Chernobyl: The History of a Nuclear Catastrophe statues of Grand Prince Volodymyr by sculptor Leo Mol. published in May by Basic Books and Penguin. Folk school workshops Stephanie Turenko Folk Camp Co-ordinator Folk Camp school has enjoyed interesting workshops at Vladimir Institute this year including beginner’s embroidery classes, and singing workshops led by Lemon Bucket Orkestra’s Marichka Marczyk. The Winter Song Series included three workshops: Introduction to Ukrainian Polyphony, Balkan Singing, and Koliadaky – Ukrainian Winter Songs. The first two workshops, held in St. Vlad’s theatre, were very successful with more than 15 people in attendance at each. The final singing workshop with Marichka is scheduled for December 12. Participants will learn traditional Ukrainian Christmas carols in “village voice”. Admission is open to all. Instruction will be in English and Ukrainian.
