Alan Moore’s Miracleman: Harbinger of the Modern Age of Comics Jeremy Larance Introduction On May 26, 2014, Marvel Comics ran a full-page advertisement in the New York Times for Alan Moore’s Miracleman, Book One: A Dream of Flying, calling the work “the series that redefined comics… in print for the first time in over 20 years.” Such an ad, particularly one of this size, is a rare move for the comic book industry in general but one especially rare for a graphic novel consisting primarily of just four comic books originally published over thirty years before- hand. Of course, it helps that the series’ author is a profitable lumi- nary such as Moore, but the advertisement inexplicably makes no reference to Moore at all. Instead, Marvel uses a blurb from Time to establish the reputation of its “new” re-release: “A must-read for scholars of the genre, and of the comic book medium as a whole.” That line came from an article written by Graeme McMillan, but it is worth noting that McMillan’s full quote from the original article begins with a specific reference to Moore: “[Miracleman] represents, thanks to an erratic publishing schedule that both predated and fol- lowed Moore’s own Watchmen, Moore’s simultaneous first and last words on ‘realism’ in superhero comics—something that makes it a must-read for scholars of the genre, and of the comic book medium as a whole.” Marvel’s excerpt, in other words, leaves out the very thing that McMillan claims is the most important aspect of Miracle- man’s critical reputation as a “missing link” in the study of Moore’s influence on the superhero genre and on the “medium as a whole.” To be fair to Marvel, for reasons that will be explained below, Moore refused to have his name associated with the Miracleman reprints, so the company was legally obligated to leave his name off of all advertisements. -

This relationship has also informed superhero comics themselves – going all the way back to Superman’s debut in Action Comics 1 (June 1938). As DC President Paul Levitz says of the development of the superhero: ‘There was an enormous desire to see social justice, a rectifying of corruption. Superman was a fulfillment of a pent-up passion for the heroic solution’ (quoted in Poniewozik 2002: 57). Chapel Hill 2012 Approved by: Madeleine Grumet James Trier Jeff Greene Lucila Vargas Renee Hobbs © 2012 Cary Gillenwater ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT CARY GILLENWATER: Graphic novels in advanced English/language arts classrooms: A phenomenological case study (Under the direction of Madeleine Grumet) This dissertation is a phenomenological case study of two 12th grade English/language arts (ELA) classrooms where teachers used graphic novels with their advanced students. The primary purpose of this case study was to gain insight into the phenomenon of using graphic novels with these students—a research area that is currently limited. Literature from a variety of disciplines was compared and contrasted with observations, interviews, questionnaires, and structured think-aloud activities for this purpose. The following questions guided the study: (1) What are the prevailing attitudes/opinions held by the ELA teachers who use graphic novels and their students about this medium? (2) What interests do the students have that connect to the phenomenon of comic book/graphic novel reading? (3) How do the teachers and the students make meaning from graphic novels? The findings generally affirmed previous scholarship that the medium of comic books/graphic novels can play a beneficial role in ELA classrooms, encouraging student involvement and ownership of texts and their visual literacy development. The findings also confirmed, however, that teachers must first conceive of literacy as more than just reading and writing phonetic texts if the use of the medium is to be more than just secondary to traditional literacy. -

Since I began reading the work of Steve Ditko I wanted to have a checklist so I could catalogue the books I had read but most importantly see what other original works by the illustrator I can find and enjoy. With the help of Brian Franczak’s vast Steve Ditko compendium, Ditko-fever.com, I compiled the following check-list that could be shared, printed, built-on and probably corrected so that the fan’s, whom his work means the most, can have a simple quick reference where they can quickly build their reading list and knowledge of the artist. It has deliberately been simplified with no cover art and information to the contents of the issue. It was my intension with this check-list to be used in accompaniment with ditko-fever.com so more information on each publication can be sought when needed or if you get curious! The checklist only contains the issues where original art is first seen and printed. No reprints, no messing about. All issues in the check-list are original and contain original Steve Ditko illustrations! Although Steve Ditko did many interviews and responded in letters to many fanzines these were not included because the checklist is on the art (or illustration) of Steve Ditko not his responses to it. I hope you get some use out of this check-list! How were you first introduced to Camp Lake Hubert? Nearly my entire family has been, and continues to be involved in camp. I am certain that I have mistakenly left someone off of this list. Did any of your family members attend or work at camp? My dad, Robert Falk,attended Camp Lincoln in the s and s. He would take the train from Omaha to the old train station at the north end of Lake Hubert. I love that camp is a tradition for our entire family! Each of my siblings were campers at Lincoln and Hubert. My sister, Carolyn Falk Sund, worked as a counselor and Jr. Camp Director, my brother, Carl Falk, worked as a counselor at Camp Lincoln, and my sister, Nancy Falk Ayoub, works to spread the word about the benefits of camp and hosts camp movies each year in Omaha. What are some of the things you learned at camp? Favorite activities? I learned to make independent and thoughtful decisions, to find confidence in myself, and the value of relationships that cross cultures, traditions, and miles. During my last summer as a camper LTI drove myself to camp. I thought it was Nancy is Happy: Complete Dailies 1942-1945 that my car was parked in the staff lot the whole month. I never did try to drive away from camp though — but, then again, who would? When Claire was deciding which city to fly into, I was able to convince her that only airplanes carrying cattle flew into Lincoln. -

One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages” Exhibit
John Read is the creator and curator of the “One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages” exhibit. A freelance cartoonist, John also teaches cartooning to children and is the publisher and editor of Stay Tooned! Magazine, considered the trade journal of the craft. The Comic Mode The comic strip provides a colorful and humorous respite from the serious and often tragic news that precedes it. There are many reasons for reading the “funny pages”; from the basic need to be entertained, to the desire to escape for a moment into what seems a playful combination of a joke and a sequence of images that illustrate the nonsense and play that generates it. Yet, what really constitutes the “comic” in a comic strip? Are they simply funny, as in Blondie, Garfield or Hagar the Horrible? Or do we sense underlying tones of irony, satire, political and social commentary as evidenced in Doonesbury, Non Sequitur, and Between Friends? How are we to understand the double entendre, the sting of wit or the twist of the absurd that infuses so many contemporary comic strips? It would seem that as in dreams, there are many levels to the comic mode. On the first take, the superficial or manifest appeal generates a smile or laughter. But as with many dreams and good jokes, there is the second take, a latent need to establish or defy meaning as embedded within the structure of the images themselves. The paradox or playfulness of the comic strip partially lies in discovering the truth in the nonsensical aspects of day-to-day living. -

It focuses on the aesthetics of comics on and beyond the page. Comics are usually taught in terms of its dominant genres (superhero) and characters (Superman, etc.). This class will cover that history minimally, in favor of a strong focus on comics as a mode of expression (discussing drawing/mark making, storytelling mechanics) and as a graphic/commercial culture that defined many pop cultural icons/idioms and in turn influenced fine artists. This course will attempt to place comics firmly within the context of visual culture in general while continually arguing for the relevance and power of the printed image.
