Paris had once been a safe haven for Jews who were trying to escape Nazi-occupied Germany, but in 1940 everything changed. The Nazis overtook the streets of Paris, and the city was no longer safe for Jews. Many Parisians were too terrified themselves to try and help their Jewish friends. Yet during that perilous time, many Jews found refuge in an unlikely place: the sprawling complex of the Grand Mosque of Paris. Behind its walls, the frightened Jews found an entire community, with gardens, apartments, a clinic, and a library. But even the mosque was under the watchful eyes of the Nazis, so it wasn’t safe for displaced Jews to remain there very long. Karen Gray Ruelle and Deborah Durland DeSaix tell the almost unknown story of this resistance and the people of the Grand Mosque and how their courage, faith, and devotion to justice saved the lives of so many.

It looks at the ways in which this strategy can help us better understand the cognition and behavior of several non-human species. In doing so, it offers support, from disparate pieces of the phylogenetic tree, for an abductive argument for the presence of LoTs. Chapter One introduces this project.

  • Contemporary Maghrebi-French Cinema and Its Audiences
Postcolonial Popcorn: Contemporary Maghrebi-French Cinema and its Audiences by Alexander Hastie A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Geography The University of Sheffield December 2017 Abstract This thesis is a study of popular contemporary postcolonial cinema, through readings of three recent Maghrebi-French films. The research is comprised of the films Days of Glory (2006), Outside the Law (2010) and Free Men (2011), which narrate unfamiliar colonial stories in familiar ways. The films are a significant part of a cultural and commercial ‘shift’ toward more mainstream filmmaking in France, and therefore provide a fascinating and complex point of entry into the study of popular postcolonial cinema. By incorporating the popular into the postcolonial, the primary contribution of this thesis is that it extends the scope of postcolonial cultural criticism, in order to highlight how such an engagement functions to interrupt hegemonic imaginaries of colonial space, memory and gender. Informed by a postcolonial critique, this thesis deploys textual analysis in order to investigate how the films are textually constituted across and through different cultural frameworks, questioning what this means for conceptualising postcolonialism. Primarily investigating the ways in which the films rewrite colonial histories using the genre conventions of Hollywood, this thesis attends to issues pertinent to postcolonial France. The thesis therefore identifies some of the key relationships to space that are narrated throughout the films, in which geographies of belonging and exclusion for Maghrebi- French people are articulated through popular aesthetics. An important part of articulating place is memory, and so this thesis also examines how occluded memories are mobilised and energised at the intersection with more familiar historical imaginaries, showing how this multidirectional relationship works to situate colonial histories in ways that are disruptive of World War Two imaginaries.

La Belle Africaine: The Sudanese Giraffe Who Went to France Abstract Abstract In 1826, Mehmet Ali of Egypt sent a giraffe from somewhere in what is now the Republic of the Sudan to King Charles X of France. The first live giraffe ever to reach France, she arrived when public museums and zoos were emerging, inspiring scholarly and popular interest in science and the world beyond French borders. This article studies the career and “afterlives” of this giraffe in France and relative to giraffes at large in the Sudan, in order to trace a Franco-Sudanese history that has stretched from the early nineteenth century to the present. At the same time, viewing this connected history in the aftermath of the 2011 secession of South Sudan, when colonial and national borders appear contingent and subject to change, this article approaches the Sudan as a zone (as opposed to a fixed country) within global networks of migration involving people, other animals, things, and ideas.

  • About the Film: “Free Men”
About the Film: “Free Men” “Free Men” (Les hommes libres). Director: Ismael Ferroukhi. Writers: Ismael Ferroukhi and Alain-Michel Blanc. France, 2012 In French with English subtitles Running time: 1 hour, 39 minutes Audience: This film is appropriate for most audiences – though there is some (wartime) violence and also references to one character’s homosexuality. In addition to the historical content, the film is an especially interesting way for college students to evaluate the interweaving of historical fact with fiction in the literary genre of historical fiction. Brief summary of the film: The film is historical fiction but takes careful pains at the end to explain which parts were factual and which parts real. (Actually, the most “unbelievable” parts are true!) Set in the Grand Mosque of Paris during World War II and the Holocaust, the movie explores the real-life activities of Muslims (including mosque officials, such as Si Kaddour Benghabrit) who rescued Jews and aided the French resistance during World War II. The fictitious part is the frame story of Younes, a young Algerian worker in Paris, who unwittingly gets caught up in the mosque’s activities. The other stories – of the rescue of Jews (including the singer Salim Halali and the extraordinary measures taken to prove he was “Muslim”), the Resistance activities, and the smuggling of fugitives outside of Paris – are true. For an extended description of the film and information about the director, cast, and crew, see: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1699185/ For a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbv7gZFutaM .

  • European Studies Report My Erasmus Placements in Paris Were: 1
European Studies Report My Erasmus placements in Paris were: 1) Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Saint Joseph 2) General Paediatrics at Necker I chose to study the European Option because I always enjoyed learning French at school and was considering studying languages at University rather than medicine. I didn’t want to let the skills I had built up decline by not continuing to learn French. Plus, I have always enjoying visiting France due to the culture and lifestyle, and wanted to improve my languages skills so I could make the most out of travelling there. I also thought it might look good as an extra qualification on future CVs and hoped that if I was planning to work in France in the future, it would show that I had an appropriate level of study in French language. My first placement was Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Saint Joseph. This is in the 14th arrondissement in the South of Paris. The nearest metro station is Plaisance on the line 13. Bear in mind that Saint Joseph is a Groupe Hospitalier so is made up of several smaller hospitals, and so, for example, Obstetrics and Gynaecology was actually in a hospital called Notre Dame de Bon Secours. I would suggest making sure to ask for the name of your supervisor from the Erasmus coordinator on the first day when you go to do your paperwork at the university. When I went to the university, I was given the impression that when I arrived at the hospital, I would be on a list of students doing placements there, and therefore someone would be expecting me, so I didn’t check who my supervisor was.

Miller, Ph.D. Andrea Mirabile, Ph.D. Daryl Lee, Ph.D. Acknowledgements This work would not have been possible without the assistance of different members of the faculty of the French Department at Vanderbilt. I am grateful to the members of my committee, whose guidance and contribution began years before the development of this project. I am thankful to Paul Miller and Andrea Mirabile for discussions and recommendations regarding the dissertation as the project evolved. Their contributions on the topics of colonialism and film theory and history were particularly helpful. I want to recognize Daryl Lee for his significant contribution to my French film knowledge and interest, from several courses on this topic at Brigham Young University to his detailed feedback on the dissertation. Finally, I am especially grateful to Lynn Ramey, whose work, support, and fortitude made this work possible. I cannot overstate the importance of her guidance, professionalism and friendship as I struggled to complete this project. I could have not worked with a greater mentor. The trips to the Cannes Film Festival, our talks on the different aspects of film and the treatment of minorities in France, and many other discussions will remain as some of the most important, rewarding, and enjoyable experiences of my academic and personal life.
