A Chairde, Friends, As you gather for the 31st annual American Celtic Ball, I wish to congratulate all those engaged with the Ireland Chamber of Commerce - USA and to tha nk you for what you do to deepen the personal and commercial connections between our countries. Ireland’s economy has performed impressively in recent years, with GDP growth consistently amongst the fastest in the EU. Our unemployment rate, which stood at 15% at the height of the economic crisis, has fallen to 5%, with more than 2.3 million people employed across the state, the highest number in our history. Buoyed by this activity, the Government budget has returned to surplus, with public and private debt levels stabilising.

But the future is less certain. As one of the world’s most open economies, Ireland is especially exposed to international developments. Tensions in the global trading system, and transatlantic trade in particular, represent a serious risk to our prosperity. Most immediately, of course, we are bracing for Brexit. Having served as Ambassador to the UK, I can attest that while we regretted the outcome of the 2016 referendum, we have always accepted the UK’s right to leave the EU. Our concern has been to limit Brexit’s negative impact. For us, that has meant, above all, the maintenance of an open border on the island of Ireland, something that helps reinforce the Good Friday Agreement and the peace it underpins. The ‘‘backstop’’ in the agreement negotiated by the UK Government and the EU provides a guarantee that, whatever the future brings, there can never be a hard border on our island. It is an insurance policy for peace, nothing more. And while our Government has always stressed that we are open to exploring alternatives to it, we have been clear that they must achieve the same result. We are under no illusion as to the seriousness of the economic risk Brexit poses. For Irish businesses, one of the best ways to mitigate its impact is to expand in new markets, including the US. I am delighted, therefore, that this year’s ICCUSA’s awardees should include Edmond Scanlon, CEO of Kerry Group, one of Ireland’s most innovative firms and largest investors in the US. Reflecting the two-way flow of transatlantic commerce, it’s fitting that Heather Bresch, CEO of Mylan, a major investor in Ireland, is being honoured also, alongside Rose Hynes, Chair of Shannon Group, which exemplifies Ireland’s openness to trade and investment. Lt Col Kevin Schmiegel is a fitting recipient of the Leadership for Life Award, whilst Mervyn Green has earned the gratitude of 33 million Irish-Americans, and many more besides, for his role in establishing the truly EPIC, Irish Emigration Museum. In celebrating such leadership and vision, the American Celtic Ball does a great service to Ireland and to the United States. In the uncertain months ahead, it will be all the more important to reinforce the ties between our nations. As Ireland’s Ambassador, I look forward to working with the ICCUSA to just that end.

Sincerely, le gach dea-ghuí

Dear Friends:

I am pleased to welcome everyone as the Ireland Chamber of Commerce in the United States hosts its 31st Annual American Celtic Ball.

New York is the proud home to residents who hail from every corner of the map, and this remarkable diversity is reflected in our dynamic business sector. Established in 1988, the Chamber offers services to facilitate trade and investment between the United States and Ireland, and it presents events where emerging and established professionals can learn more about trends in the international marketplace and build valuable connections that may help them advance their careers and enterprises. This wonderful organization also fosters positive change through its Foundation and Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life programs that promote leadership development and educational advancement among youth from around the world. Tonight’s event is a terrific occasion to commend ICCUSA’s members and supporters for their efforts to uplift Irish New Yorkers, increase economic growth, and empower our vital entrepreneurs and industry leaders. I look forward to the continued contributions of everyone gathered as we work together to expand opportunity in the five boroughs and build a fairer city where people of all backgrounds can rise.

On behalf of the City of New York, congratulations to tonight’s honorees. Please accept my best wishes for a festive celebration and continued success.

Sincerely,

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, it is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to everyone gathered for the 31st Annual American Celtic Ball. I have long counted the Ireland Chamber of Commerce – USA (ICCUSA) as a friend and partner of the U.S. Chamber.

As a descendant of Irish immigrants, I feel a strong personal bond to the country of my heritage and its spirited people. It has been my privilege to work toward strengthening the ties between the United States and Ireland through business partnerships and commercial opportunities.

Today our bilateral economic relationship is strong—and getting stronger. Private investment flows steadily between our nations, creating many thousands of jobs for our peoples and billions of dollars in growth for our economies. Our nations share an innovative spirit, an entrepreneurial drive, and a thriving people-to-people relationship. We’re also working together to provide leadership in the global economy by promoting robust transatlantic trade.

The ICCUSA has been a powerful advocate for the U.S.-Ireland partnership and continues to foster mutually beneficial opportunities for both countries. I appreciate its work and congratulate all of tonight’s award recipients for their achievements and contributions.

Sincerely,

GAAGO-Ad-Sept2017-v2.indd 1 21/09/2017 14:51 Mr. Mervyn Greene Group Managing Director, The chq Building Director, EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum

ervyn Greene is a serial entrepreneur who is currently based in Cork, after working all over the world for 30 years. Born in MZambia and educated in Ireland, Mervyn worked for Morgan Stanley in New York, Hong Kong, and latterly London after graduating from Trinity in Maths and Engineering.

After acquiring an MBA at the London Business School, Mervyn formed a boutique venture capital and private equity company, which founded, co-funded, or invested in a number of diverse businesses based in Africa, the UK, Ireland and Australia over the years. Two of the companies were subsequently listed on the London and Australian stock exchanges, one of which, Deep Yellow Limited, is still going strong.

In 2013 Neville Isdell purchased The chq Building (CHQ) - a massive, iconic, and important Georgian maritime warehouse located in Dublin’s financial district at George’s Dock, close to the Customs House. Mervyn is now directing a multi-year plan to bring it back to life as well as helping to develop the surrounding area. The jewel in the crown of that strategy is EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum (EPIC), which opened in mid-2016 and which Mervyn ran as Museum Director. EPIC is a truly 21st century museum and uses digital technology to create an immersive, interactive story-telling experience that has captivated, educated and entertained many hundreds of thousands of visitors in its short life so far. EPIC has also won numerous awards in the cultural/historical, educational and tourism sectors, making it truly unique in Dublin and Ireland.

Mervyn is a non-executive director of a number of companies and is the co-founder and Chairman of Dogpatch Labs 2.0, Ireland’s premier start- up hub for scaling Tech companies, which is also based in CHQ. Mervyn recently chaired the Trinity College Steering Group that over four years designed, financed and built the new €80m TCD Business School.

31st Annual American Celtic Ball 49 The U.S. Chamber of Commerce congratulates alumnus Kevin Schmiegel

and all of the honorees at the American Celtic Ball for their commitment to excellence in the business community. Mr. Kevin Schmiegel Lieutenant Colonel, USMC (Ret.) and Chief Executive Officer, Operation Gratitude

etired Marine Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Schmiegel is the CEO of Operation Gratitude, whose mission is to forge strong bonds between RAmericans and their Military and First Responder Heroes through volunteer service projects, acts of gratitude, and meaningful engagements in communities nationwide. Since 2003, Operation Gratitude has mobilized millions of volunteers nationwide and delivered more than 2.3 million Care Packages to deployed Service Members, to their children left behind, and to First Responders, New Recruit Graduates, Veterans, Wounded Heroes, and their Caregivers. Schmiegel’s role is to oversee strategic planning and build national partnerships to further Operation Gratitude’s reach as a preeminent military support organization while expanding hands-on volunteerism to help bridge the civilian-service divide in communities across America.

Prior to Operation Gratitude, Lieutenant Colonel Schmiegel founded Hiring Our Heroes – a nationwide grassroots campaign run through the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment in hundreds of cities across America. Since its inception, Hiring Our Heroes has held more than 1,000 job fairs in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and on military installations overseas. To date, more than 500,000 of our nation’s heroes have been hired as a result of the program. After Hiring Our Heroes, Schmiegel was a Vice President of Corporate Relations at the US Chamber where he developed membership opportunities with CEOs and senior executives of domestic and international companies and secured their leadership participation on issues facing the business community. He went on to serve as the first-ever President of Thanks USA, expanding the scope of its mission from providing post-secondary, need-based scholarships to military spouses and children to include Pathways for Patriots, an innovative program to provide meaningful employment for the scholars upon graduation.

LtCol Schmiegel is a Class of 1989 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps and retired at the rank of lieutenant colonel after 20 years on active duty. In addition to an early combat tour to Kuwait for Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Schmiegel served as the principal adviser to the NATO commander from 2003-2006, deploying to over 50 countries in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Schmiegel also wrote the strategic plans for NATO’s training mission in Iraq, its increased presence in Afghanistan, and disaster relief operations for Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Pakistan. In 2008, Schmiegel served as the military assistant to the special envoy for Middle East Regional Security and deployed to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, where he worked with Israeli and Palestinian authorities on the peace process.

Kevin lives in Arlington Virginia with his wife Laura. When he is not working, he focuses all of his time and energy on their five children and two dogs.

31st Annual American Celtic Ball 51 A Mission of Access Guides Mylan’s Growth Around the World

Two friends from a small West Virginia town had a simple idea: They wanted people in rural areas to have access to the medicines they needed. That idea would become the guiding mission of Mylan, a company that has grown from humble beginnings in the U.S. into a global pharmaceutical leader dedicated to Mylan co-founders, Milan (“Mike”) Puskar (left) creating better health for a better world. and Don Panoz (right)

To help prevent the disease in Ireland, Mylan supported the implementation of nationally-reimbursed pre-exposure prophylaxis programs and successfully pioneered the launch of these important medicines in retail pharmacies, expanding access for Irish patients.

Whether it’s the diversity of our commercial, operational and scientific platforms or our substantial mix of science, products, manufacturing capabilities, operational expertise, geographic diversity and therapeutic franchises, we are continually focused on meeting the needs of patients today while also anticipating their needs in the years to come.

To that end, a definitive agreement was recently announced to combine Mylan with Upjohn, a division of Pfizer, to create a new global pharmaceutical company. More information can be found at championforglobalhealth.com.

“Nearly eight years after becoming CEO, I’m proud to say that this milestone represents the culmination of the goals I set for myself when I challenged Mylan and our amazing workforce to set new standards in healthcare,” said Bresch. “As a champion for better health, we take seriously our role and the impact we have on the lives of billions across the world. Mylan’s commitment to better health goes beyond products. Mylan also In 2018, Mylan supplied >7,500 products believes that one of the most powerful ways to be a champion for patients with the ability to treat 9 out of the top 10 is by speaking out on their behalf. SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES BY GIVING BACK

From Mylan’s early days in West Virginia, “giving back” has also been a core part of our mission. Whether through monetary contributions, product and service donations, program and event support or through our employees contributing their time and expertise to help others, our efforts are aimed at improving quality of life by responding to local needs and circumstances. We’re always considering ways to make a positive impact in the communities where we live and work. That work has included diverse education, health and social initiatives around the world such as improving access to clean water, spreading awareness of infectious diseases to populations most at- risk, investing in the health and well-being of our employees and practicing responsible environmental stewardship at our facilities.

31st Annual American Celtic Ball 63 ICCUSA The leading networking Organization Between Ireland and the USA

hirty one years ago, few individuals realized that there was no Chamber of TCommerce representing Ireland in the United States and vice-a-versa to open the doors for US companies in Ireland. The decision took place to form the Ireland Chamber of Commerce at a time when Ireland’s unemployment was at over 20% and was basically an agricultural and tourist driven economy. Over the last decade, that has changed dramatically and the American investment in Ireland has been one of the driving forces. However, we all realize that by capitalizing on the most educated young people in Europe, opportunities would lie ahead. It is interesting to know now that Ireland is the 9th largest customer for American products and services. Added to this, there are equally the same number of Americans employed in Irish companies based in America, as there are Americans in companies based in Ireland. We would like to feel that we played some small part in this success story. Our objectives are: n provide a forum for the development of business relations between the United States and Ireland n encourage and facilitate a business exchange of information, ideas and expertise between Ireland and the United States n development of economic, commercial, financial and educational elationshipsr on both sides of the Atlantic Sir Michael W.J.
