GLOBAL LEADING AUTOMOTIVE PORT A UTOMOTIVE P ORT The Port of Zeebrugge ranks at the top of the world’s leading ports for the export and import of new cars. In total, 2.2 million new vehicles were handled in 2020. This allows the Port of Zeebrugge to act as an intercontinental and European hub. These car units arrive and depart with various short sea and deep-sea operators, which dock at dedicated terminals in the port. In addition to the carriers, almost all major car manufacturers have put their confidence in the Port of Zeebrugge. Automotive companies do not only use the port for the transport of finished vehicles, they also use it for the logistics of spare parts and components. Shipping companies mainly operate in the inner port, more than 400 hectares have been put at the disposal of the automotive sector. In addition to finished vehicles, the Port of Zeebrugge has a leading position in the transport and logistics of oversized and project cargoes, such as agricultural machines, excavators and machine components. More than 76,000 of these H & H units, including buses, oversized trucks, cranes, wind turbines, agricultural machines, etc., were transported through the port in 2017. This cargo is transported by the many deep-sea and short-sea shipping companies operating in the port. In addition to the transport of project cargo, the companies within the Port of Zeebrugge also provide a broad range of value-added services ranging from high & heavy pre-delivery and inspection to paint booths, assembly or disassembly and optional instalments. The well-connected hinterland can be reached by road with dedicated transport and distribution companies or by rail and barge. For example, the estuary barge ‘Polybotes’ has been modified especially for moving project cargo. Complete factories have already passed through the Port of Zeebrugge by combining all transport modes at our high & heavy world hub.
