    COLLAB CORNER Creative Collabs and Technology in the Time of Coronavirus Margo Garrett oday is May 1 in Minnesota and it should be a sunny day. Like many similar days of late, it looks as if it wants to be sunny. I can see bright azure sky peeping out of tiny openings in a translucent covering of Watteau-esque gray. Perhaps Mother Nature does Tnot want to offend our prevailing states of sadness and fear with the overt gleefulness of her brightest splendors. If so, I thank her for her sensitivity. I simply cannot all at once rejoice in coming spring, but trust that Nature will gradually persuade me by her overwhelmingly opulent gifts of warmth, green, fragrance, breeze, and, yes, even sun, to join her May Day dance. I pray that Margo Garrett by the time you read this in September, we will have found a treatment or even a cure. In the meantime, music, musicians, friends, my husband, and Zoom sustain me. I bought a Zoom recorder some years ago for my students to use to record their lessons and to borrow when they needed to make audition videos. The audio is superior, and the video the clearest I have ever seen. A wonderful little machine it is. So when someone asked me in the last year or so if I used Zoom, I enthusiastically responded, “Yes, of course!” How shocked I was, then, to find myself soon thereafter staring at my own live image in a bingo-like grid on my computer desktop with eight other friends and board members smiling in delight and waving at me! What a wonderful invention! Since then, it is my preferred choice of communication—a telephone all grown up and personal.

    Issue 98: Christianity in China As for Me and My House The house-church movement survived persecution and created a surge of Christian growth across China. Tony Lambert On the eve of the Communist victory in 1949, there were around one million Protestants (of all denominations) in China. In 2007, even the most conservative official polls reported 40 million, and these do not take into account the millions of secret Christians in the Communist Party and the government. What accounts for this astounding growth? Many observers point to the role of Chinese house churches. The house-church movement began in the pre-1949 missionary era. New converts—especially in evangelical missions like the China Inland Mission and the Christian & Missionary Alliance—would often meet in homes. Also, the rapidly growing independent churches, such as the True Jesus Church, the Little Flock, and the Jesus Family, stressed lay ministry and evangelism. The Little Flock had no pastors, relying on every "brother" to lead ministry, and attracted many educated city people and students who were dissatisfied with the traditional foreign missions and denominations. The Jesus Family practiced communal living and attracted the rural poor. These independent churches were uniquely placed to survive, and eventually flourish, in the new, strictly-controlled environment. In the early 1950s, the Three-Self Patriotic Movement eliminated denominations and created a stifling political control over the dwindling churches. Many believers quietly began to pull out of this system.

Thirty years later Daniel Bonbright, professor of Latin and a member of Northwestern’s original faculty, redesigned the seal, Whatsoever things are true, retaining the book and light rays and adding two quotations. whatsoever things are honest, On the pages of the open book he placed a Greek quotation from the Gospel of John, chapter 1, verse 14, translating to The Word . whatsoever things are just, full of grace and truth. Circling the book are the first three whatsoever things are pure, words, in Latin, of the University motto: Quaecumque sunt vera whatsoever things are lovely, (What soever things are true). The outer border of the seal carries the name of the University and the date of its founding. I was born in the United States but was raised in China, where I graduated from high school in Chengdu. In addition to being a student, I am the Director-General of UNC’s high school Model UN conference, MUNCH. I also work as a Resident Advisor at UNC and am involved in Refugee Community Partnership here in Chapel Hill. Since I’ll be in the Crisis room with my good friend and co-director Payton Tysinger, you’ll be interacting primarily with Chair Taylor Gosk and co-chair Vinayak Grover. Taylor is a sophomore as well, and she is majoring in Public Policy and Environmental Studies. I have her to thank for teaching me that Starbucks will, in fact, fill up my thermos with their delightfully bitter coffee. When she’s not saving the environment one plastic cup at a time, you can find her working as the Secretary General of MUNCH or refereeing a whole range of athletic events here at UNC.

    Moscow’s Sun Yat-sen University On 12 March 1925, Sun Yat-sen, pioneer of the Chinese Revolution, died in Beijing, leaving China and the Chinese people in turmoil. Just before dying, he signed a number of documents. The best-known were his testament, drafted by Wang Jingwei, and a letter to the Central Executive of the Soviet Socialist Republic, drafted by Eugene Chen. The letter read: Dear Comrades, I have firm confidence in the reliable support you have given my country to this day. In bidding you farewell, dear comrades, allow me to express the hope that the day will soon come when the Soviet Union will be able to greet a friend and ally in the shape of a powerful and free China, and that the two united countries will march hand in hand in the great strug- gle for the emancipation of the oppressed peoples of the world. I leave behind a Party that, as has always been my wish, will be bound with you in the historic work of the final liberation from the imperialist order of China and other exploited nations. By the will of fate, I must leave my work unfinished and hand it over to those who, remaining true to the Party’s principles and teachings, will show themselves to be my true followers. Sun Yat-sen This was Soviet Russia and the Chinese revolutionaries’ honeymoon period. However, the love-affair went through difficult times. In July 1912, after the 1911 Revolution, Lenin read Sun Yat-sen’s ‘On the Social Meaning of the Chinese Revolution’ and wrote ‘Democracy and Narodnism in China’, in which he expressed infinite respect for Sun and China in the wake of the Revolution: In China, the Asiatic provisional President of the Republic is a revolu- tionary democrat, endowed with the nobility and heroism of a class that is rising, not declining, a class that does not dread the future, but believes in it and fights for it selflessly, a class that does not cling to main- tenance and restoration of the past to safeguard its privileges, but hates the past and knows how to cast off its dead and stifling decay.
