Volume I of II Albertine MALHAM BSc (Hons), MPhil submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Archaeological Sciences University of Bradford 2010 Albertine MALHAM THE CLASSIFICATION AND INTERPRETATION OF TIN SMELTING REMAINS FROM SOUTH-WEST ENGLAND KEYWORDS: Tin Smelting Blowing house Slag Furnace Devon Cornwall Medieval Post-medieval Artefacts relating to tin smelting from tin mills or ‘blowing houses’ in Devon and Cornwall, plus material from smelting sites that cover a range of dates from the Bronze Age through to the 19th Century, were examined: these include metallic tin, furnace linings, ore samples and slag. Analysis of tin slags from over forty sites was carried out, to determine microstructure and chemical composition. Techniques employed included optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence and ICP mass spectrometry. Analysis indicates that slag appearance and composition are heavily influenced by local geology. Composition, particularly iron content, is shown to have a strong effect on slag melting point and viscosity, and the implications for the purity of metal produced are discussed. Bringing together the evidence provided by slag chemistry, documentary sources and smelting remains in the archaeological record, changes in tin smelting technology through time, and the consequences thereof, are considered.

Atmd THE GODOLPHINS 1: PART I GODOLPHIN OF GODOLPHIN This ancient Comish family takes its name from the manor, which it has possessed from the time of the Norman conquest, and which is held to-day by John Francis Godolphin Osborne, eleventh duke of Leeds, XXXI in descent from the first known lord of the manor, John de Godolphin. The lineal descent of this, the main stock, is denoted in the text below by ordinal numbers. The massive, grey, quadrangular manor house, five miles north­ west of Helston, stands, sheltered from the south-westerly gales by 1Godolphin Hill, in the middle of a rich, mineral district, of which Richard Carew wrote in 1602 :- " This hill hath pr. divers descents supplyed those gent.-bountifull mindes with large meanes accruing from their Tynne-works." In early times the _name was written " Godolghan," meaning, in Comish, "White Eagle," and that device was borne on the shield of the family. From Norman to Tudor times, the manor was passed from father to son, with one break in the male 1.iJ:ie in the 14th century.
