  • Geoffrey Massey Dies at Age 96
Geoffrey Massey dies at age 96 The son of actor Raymond Massey was partners with Arthur Erickson in the 1960s. VANCOUVER SUN John Mackie Dec 02, 2020 Vancouver architects Arthur Erickson, left, and Geoffrey Massey, here on July, 31, 1963, had their design chosen for the new Simon Fraser University of Burnaby Mountain. Erickson is the University of B.C. associate professor of architecture. Massey is the son of actor Raymond Massey. Photo by Deni Eagland /PNG Geoffrey Massey’s legacy can be seen all over Vancouver. As Arthur Erickson’s architectural partner in the 1960s and early ’70s, he helped design local icons like Simon Fraser University and the MacMillan Bloedel Building. As a Vancouver city councillor with Art Phillips and TEAM in 1972, he was part of a political movement that put a stop to freeways and redeveloped the south side of False Creek from industrial to residential. He was even one of the early owners, architects and developers at Whistler in the 1960s. Massey died Tuesday morning from pneumonia in a hospice near Lion’s Gate Hospital in North Vancouver. He was 96. His life story could have been scripted by Hollywood. In fact, his father, Raymond Massey, was a movie star, his uncle Vincent was Canada’s governor-general from 1952-59, and his family founded the farm-equipment giant Massey-Harris, which became Massey-Ferguson. Geoffrey Massey was born on Oct. 29, 1924, in London, England, where his dad had a long and successful career in live theatre. His mother, Peggy Fremantle, also came from a prominent family — her father was British Admiral Sydney Fremantle.

http://spider.georgetowncollege.edu/htallant/border/bs10/fr-harw.htm Border States: Journal of the Kentucky-Tennessee American Studies Association, No. 10 (1995) DOCUMENTING THE DIRECTOR: DELBERT MANN, HIS LIFE, HIS WORK, AND HIS PAPERS Sarah Harwell Vanderbilt University Library The Papers of Delbert Mann at the Special Collections Library of Vanderbilt University provide not only a rich chronicle of the award-winning television and motion picture director's life and work, but also document the history of aspects of American popular culture and motion picture art in the latter half of the twentieth century. Delbert Mann was born in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1920. He moved to Nashville, which he considers his home town, as a young boy when his father came to teach at Scarritt College. He graduated from Hume-Fogg High School and Vanderbilt University, where Dinah Shore and Mann's future wife, Ann Caroline Gillespie, were among his classmates. Also in Nashville he developed a lifelong friendship with Fred Coe through their mutual involvement in the Nashville Community Playhouse. Coe would play a very important role in Mann's life. A few months after his graduation from Vanderbilt in 1941, Mann joined the Eighth Air Force, for which he completed thirty-five missions as a pilot of a B-24 bomber. After the end of the Second World War he attended the Yale Drama School, followed by two years as director of the Town Theatre of Columbia, South Carolina. In 1949, Fred Coe, already a producer at NBC television network, invited Delbert Mann to come to New York to direct live television drama on the "Philco Television Playhouse." Then in its infancy, television offered many fine original plays to its relatively small viewing audience.

Tom Marshall’s Weekly News, September 12, 2016 Actors and Actresses Depicting Famous People: The Weekly News of December 11, 2006, was entitled “Let’s Go to the Movies.” When I was young during the Golden Age of Hollywood, I loved the movies, culminating in the Club House Theater in Yorklyn, which I operated for two seasons in 1947 and 1948. From the 1930s through the ‘50s, leading stars of the screen were under contract with the big studios and often took roles not to their liking. Among the features during this period was the portrayal of American heroes in full-length films, which carried over to historical documentaries on TV. The earlier movies took liberties with actual facts, but they were popular. Big name stars were often asked to portray historical figures. Sometimes they were honored to do it; often they “had to.” Following is the list of those I can recall. Spencer Tracy: Clarence Darrow, Father Flanagan, Christopher Jones, Jimmy Doolittle, Thomas Edison, Robert Rogers. Edward Arnold: Pawnee Bill, Daniel Webster Walter Hampden: Thomas Jefferson Hal Holbrook: John Adams, Mark Twain, Abraham Lincoln Henry Fonda: Abraham Lincoln James Stewart: Glenn Miller, Charles A. • Slavery and the Santa Te Trail 87
slavery and the santa te trail or, John brown on hollywood's sour apple tree robert e. morsberger Robert Morsberger's essay was intended for the special festschrift num ber (xvi, 2) marking Alexander Kern's retirement. We publish it here with this headnote because, though it became ready for publication too late to make that issue, we're happy to go on honoring Alex. The furor after the publication of William Styron's The Confessions of Nat Turner in 1967 demonstrates the intensity of our reactions to Afro-American history in general and to slave insurrections in particular. Americans are being made aware of the insurrections of Cato, Gabriel Prosser, Denmark Vesey and the revolt aboard the Amistad; and Stanley Elkins's theory that slavery reduced blacks in America to passive "sambos" is being challenged. For the most part the insurrectionists are now hailed as heroic freedom fighters whose violence was justified as prisoners of war trying to escape from or overthrow their captors. The complex ambiguity of Styron's treatment of Nat Turner, even though the novel is an ironic indictment of slavery, so angered black militants that they stopped the production of a movie version of the book. From this perspective, it may be profitable to look back and examine the one major Hollywood film that did deal at length with the issue of American slave insurrection. This is Warner Brothers', The Santa Fe Trail, a popular hit of 1940. The film is of considerable interest as a vehicle of popular culture, embodying some of the confusions and prejudices of the pre-civil rights era; and as it is still shown frequently on television, its propaganda, dated though it is, may continue to influence audiences.
