UNCERTAIN GLORY (The other Casablanca) For THOMAS McNULTY- in appreciation and gratitude* Uncertain Glory is the 29th in the celluloid career of Errol Flynn. The only film of Flynn’s released for the year 1944 falling between Northern Pursuit and Objective Burma. The first of a series of seven films (ultimately amended to three) to be made by Flynn’s company, Thomson Productions, which was contracted to Warners both for use of facilities and release arrange-ments. It has the distinction of being the 5th of 8 films in which Flynn would die, along with Charge of the Light Brigade, Dawn Patrol, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, They Died With Their Boots On, Rocky Mountain, Too Much Too Soon, and The Roots of Heaven). And also the 4th of 5 dealing with the subject of World War 2- the others being Desperate Journey, Edge of Darkness, Northern Pursuit, and Objective Burma. It’s Flynn’s first important film post-trial. He’s in mid-career, and about 33 years old. He is vulnerable and changed. And the performance shows it- someone in transition, from a boyish attitude toward life into a man’s more serious focus (remember we’re speaking about Flynn: he still had his extra-curricular activities- only less of them). At about this time he was paying alimony and support, married**, LIVING WITH Nora, a father, working on the novel Showdown (writing always having a calming effect), and a recently successful USO and bond tour (meaning public acceptance). He chose this film as his next project, and it DID NOT capitalize on (although there are the usual references to a young man in search of feminine company) the rape trial (the ordeal actually started on 10/11/42 with 2 policemen coming to the house and culminated in an acquittal on 2/6/43) by suggesting the new image he would ultimately be saddled with. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Masks in Disguise: Exposing Minstrelsy and Racial Representation within American Tap Dance Performances of the Stage, Screen, and Sound Cartoon, 1900-1950 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by Brynn Wein Shiovitz 2016 © Copyright by Brynn Wein Shiovitz 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Masks in Disguise: Exposing Minstrelsy and Racial Representation within American Tap Dance Performances of the Stage, Screen, and Sound Cartoon, 1900-1950 by Brynn Wein Shiovitz Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Susan Leigh Foster, Chair Masks in Disguise: Exposing Minstrelsy and Racial Representation within American Tap Dance Performances of the Stage, Screen, and Sound Cartoon, 1900-1950, looks at the many forms of masking at play in three pivotal, yet untheorized, tap dance performances of the twentieth century in order to expose how minstrelsy operates through various forms of masking. The three performances that I examine are: George M. Cohan’s production of Little Johnny ii Jones (1904), Eleanor Powell’s “Tribute to Bill Robinson” in Honolulu (1939), and Terry- Toons’ cartoon, “The Dancing Shoes” (1949). These performances share an obvious move away from the use of blackface makeup within a minstrel context, and a move towards the masked enjoyment in “black culture” as it contributes to the development of a uniquely American form of entertainment. In bringing these three disparate performances into dialogue I illuminate the many ways in which American entertainment has been built upon an Africanist aesthetic at the same time it has generally disparaged the black body. -

Geoffrey Massey dies at age 96 The son of actor Raymond Massey was partners with Arthur Erickson in the 1960s. Erickson is the University of B.C. associate professor of architecture. Massey is the son of actor Raymond Massey. Photo by Deni Eagland /PNG Geoffrey Massey’s legacy can be seen all over Vancouver. As Arthur Erickson’s architectural partner in the 1960s and early ’70s, he helped design local icons like Simon Fraser University and the MacMillan Bloedel Building. As a Vancouver city councillor with Art Phillips and TEAM in 1972, he was part of a political movement that put a stop to freeways and redeveloped the south side of False Creek from industrial to residential. He was even one of the early owners, architects and developers at Whistler in the 1960s. Massey died Tuesday morning from pneumonia in a hospice near Lion’s Gate Hospital in North Vancouver. He was 96. His life story could have been scripted by Hollywood. In fact, his father, Raymond Massey, was a movie star, his uncle Vincent was Canada’s governor-general from 1952-59, and his family founded the farm-equipment giant Massey-Harris, which became Massey-Ferguson. Geoffrey Massey was born on Oct. 29, 1924, in London, England, where his dad had a long and successful career in live theatre. His mother, Peggy Fremantle, also came from a prominent family — her father was British Admiral Sydney Fremantle. -

SAVANT BOOK REVIEW Tuesday December 5, 2017 Hello! A Book Review today, and a very positive one. Good books about film directors are not easy to come by, and when a real winner surfaces like Bernard Eisenschitz’s book on Nicholas Ray or Foster Hirsch’s on Otto Preminger, I take notice. Joining those for reference-quality value and getting an A+ for sheer entertainment, Alan K. Rode’s Michael Curtiz A Life in Film is engaging from the start and doesn’t let up. Curtiz is different because he was never a cult director or one likely to be studied from an academic viewpoint — he was an artisan that for the bulk of his career worked at just one studio. But he had a terrific, recognizable style and made more ‘great’ golden age Hollywood pictures than anybody — Errol Flynn swashbucklers, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Casablanca, Mildred Pierce, White Christmas among them. He wasn’t an outright rebel or a hyphenate that generated his own scripts; he didn’t have highly personal themes to express. He also did everything — high adventure, literary adaptations, tense thrillers, ‘women’s dramas’ and even light comedies. Although Curtiz tangled with his studio bosses Jack Warner and Hal Wallis as much as anybody, before this book all I really knew about him was that he had made silent films in Hungary, and that he tied mogul Sam Goldwyn for quoted malapropisms, the most famous being “Bring on the empty horses,” from The Charge of the Light Brigade. With a sure hand, good research and a knack for amusing ironies, author Rode really brings Curtiz to life. -

http://spider.georgetowncollege.edu/htallant/border/bs10/fr-harw.htm Border States: Journal of the Kentucky-Tennessee American Studies Association, No. 10 (1995) DOCUMENTING THE DIRECTOR: DELBERT MANN, HIS LIFE, HIS WORK, AND HIS PAPERS Sarah Harwell Vanderbilt University Library The Papers of Delbert Mann at the Special Collections Library of Vanderbilt University provide not only a rich chronicle of the award-winning television and motion picture director's life and work, but also document the history of aspects of American popular culture and motion picture art in the latter half of the twentieth century. Delbert Mann was born in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1920. He moved to Nashville, which he considers his home town, as a young boy when his father came to teach at Scarritt College. He graduated from Hume-Fogg High School and Vanderbilt University, where Dinah Shore and Mann's future wife, Ann Caroline Gillespie, were among his classmates. Also in Nashville he developed a lifelong friendship with Fred Coe through their mutual involvement in the Nashville Community Playhouse. Coe would play a very important role in Mann's life. A few months after his graduation from Vanderbilt in 1941, Mann joined the Eighth Air Force, for which he completed thirty-five missions as a pilot of a B-24 bomber. After the end of the Second World War he attended the Yale Drama School, followed by two years as director of the Town Theatre of Columbia, South Carolina. In 1949, Fred Coe, already a producer at NBC television network, invited Delbert Mann to come to New York to direct live television drama on the "Philco Television Playhouse." Then in its infancy, television offered many fine original plays to its relatively small viewing audience.
