  • Museum of the Moving Image Presents Comprehensive Terrence Malick Retrospective
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE PRESENTS COMPREHENSIVE TERRENCE MALICK RETROSPECTIVE Moments of Grace: The Collected Terrence Malick includes all of his features, some alternate versions, and a preview screening of his new film A Hidden Life November 15–December 8, 2019 Astoria, New York, November 12, 2019—In celebration of Terrence Malick’s new film, the deeply spiritual, achingly ethical, and politically resonant A Hidden Life, Museum of the Moving Image presents the comprehensive retrospective Moments of Grace: The Collected Terrence Malick, from November 15 through December 8. The films in the series span a period of nearly 50 years, opening with Malick’s 1970s breakthroughs Badlands (1973) and Days of Heaven (1978), through his career-revival masterworks The Thin Red Line (1998) and The New World (2005), and continuing with his 21st- century films—from Cannes Palme d’Or winner The Tree of Life (2011); the trio of To the Wonder (2012), Knight of Cups (2015), and Song to Song (2017); and sole documentary project Voyage of Time (2016)—through to this year’s A Hidden Life. Two of these films will be presented in alternate versions—Voyage of Time and The New World—a testament to Malick’s ambitious and exploratory approach to editing. In addition to Malick’s own feature films, the series includes Pocket Money (1972), an ambling buddy comedy with Lee Marvin and Paul Newman, which he wrote (but did not direct), and Thy Kingdom Come (2018), the documentary featurette shot on the set of To the Wonder by photographer Eugene Richards.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Masks in Disguise: Exposing Minstrelsy and Racial Representation within American Tap Dance Performances of the Stage, Screen, and Sound Cartoon, 1900-1950 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by Brynn Wein Shiovitz 2016 © Copyright by Brynn Wein Shiovitz 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Masks in Disguise: Exposing Minstrelsy and Racial Representation within American Tap Dance Performances of the Stage, Screen, and Sound Cartoon, 1900-1950 by Brynn Wein Shiovitz Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Susan Leigh Foster, Chair Masks in Disguise: Exposing Minstrelsy and Racial Representation within American Tap Dance Performances of the Stage, Screen, and Sound Cartoon, 1900-1950, looks at the many forms of masking at play in three pivotal, yet untheorized, tap dance performances of the twentieth century in order to expose how minstrelsy operates through various forms of masking. The three performances that I examine are: George M. Cohan’s production of Little Johnny ii Jones (1904), Eleanor Powell’s “Tribute to Bill Robinson” in Honolulu (1939), and Terry- Toons’ cartoon, “The Dancing Shoes” (1949). These performances share an obvious move away from the use of blackface makeup within a minstrel context, and a move towards the masked enjoyment in “black culture” as it contributes to the development of a uniquely American form of entertainment. In bringing these three disparate performances into dialogue I illuminate the many ways in which American entertainment has been built upon an Africanist aesthetic at the same time it has generally disparaged the black body.

JOHN WAYNE AT FOX — THE WESTERNS ohn Wayne at Fox – not a lot of films, Bernstein’s music is as iconic and big as the federate who decides to burn his plantation but some extraordinarily entertaining Duke himself. • SAVANT BOOK REVIEW Tuesday December 5, 2017
SAVANT BOOK REVIEW Tuesday December 5, 2017 Hello! A Book Review today, and a very positive one. Good books about film directors are not easy to come by, and when a real winner surfaces like Bernard Eisenschitz’s book on Nicholas Ray or Foster Hirsch’s on Otto Preminger, I take notice. Joining those for reference-quality value and getting an A+ for sheer entertainment, Alan K. Rode’s Michael Curtiz A Life in Film is engaging from the start and doesn’t let up. Curtiz is different because he was never a cult director or one likely to be studied from an academic viewpoint — he was an artisan that for the bulk of his career worked at just one studio. But he had a terrific, recognizable style and made more ‘great’ golden age Hollywood pictures than anybody — Errol Flynn swashbucklers, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Casablanca, Mildred Pierce, White Christmas among them. He wasn’t an outright rebel or a hyphenate that generated his own scripts; he didn’t have highly personal themes to express. He also did everything — high adventure, literary adaptations, tense thrillers, ‘women’s dramas’ and even light comedies. Although Curtiz tangled with his studio bosses Jack Warner and Hal Wallis as much as anybody, before this book all I really knew about him was that he had made silent films in Hungary, and that he tied mogul Sam Goldwyn for quoted malapropisms, the most famous being “Bring on the empty horses,” from The Charge of the Light Brigade. With a sure hand, good research and a knack for amusing ironies, author Rode really brings Curtiz to life.

FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM COGS108 Final Project Group Members: Yanyi Wang Ziwen Zeng Lingfei Lu Yuhan Wang Yuqing Deng Introduction and Background Movie revenue is one of the most important measure of good and bad movies. Revenue is also the most important and intuitionistic feedback to producers, directors and actors. Therefore it is worth for us to put effort on analyzing what factors correlate to revenue, so that producers, directors and actors know how to get higher revenue on next movie by focusing on most correlated factors. Our project focuses on anaylzing all kinds of factors that correlated to revenue, for example, genres, elements in the movie, popularity, release month, runtime, vote average, vote count on website and cast etc. After analysis, we can clearly know what are the crucial factors to a movie's revenue and our analysis can be used as a guide for people shooting movies who want to earn higher renveue for their next movie. They can focus on those most correlated factors, for example, shooting specific genre and hire some actors who have higher average revenue. Reasrch Question: Various factors blend together to create a high revenue for movie, but what are the most important aspect contribute to higher revenue? What aspects should people put more effort on and what factors should people focus on when they try to higher the revenue of a movie? http://localhost:8888/nbconvert/html/Desktop/MyProjects/Pr_085/FinalProject.ipynb?download=false Page 1 of 62 FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM Hypothesis: We predict that the following factors contribute the most to movie revenue.
