Hungary The Great Plain The Great Plain Balatonmelleke Mild wet climate with rich soils. White: Chardonnay, Muller-Thurgau, Olasrizling Red: Kekofrankos, Zweigelt Sub-regions: Balatonmellek, Muravideki Badascony This wine region is situated on old volcanoes (Badacsony, Gulács), which determine the landscape of the western basin of Lake Balaton. White: Olaszrizling and Kéknyelű. Red: Kekofrankos. Balatonfured-Csopak This region has a sub-Mediterranean climate because of the sunny hills on the northern shore of the lake. The most famous wines are Rajnai Rizling and Olasz- rizling, but in the Tihany peninsula red wines such as Tihanyi Zweigelt and Tihanyi Merlot are favourable. Balatonfelvedik Northern part of Lake Balaton between Aszófő and Káli Basin. Rich in white grapes and the most famous brands are Olaszrizling, Szürkebarát and Rizlingszilváni. Sub-regions: Cserzeg, Kal, Balatonederics-Lesence Balatonboglar Rather hilly, which offers a similar condition for vine growing as in the northern shore. White: Chardonnay, Királyleányka and Rajnai Rizling. Sub-regions: Csafordi, Szentgyorgyvari, Muravideki, Zala This is the youngest amongst our wine regions. Among the Zala Hills the hard working farmers produce white wines, Olaszrizling and Rizlingszilváni. Csongrad A large area located in south central Hungary. Produces nearly half of the country’s wine. White: Olaszriszling. Red: Kekofrankos, Kadarka amd Zweigelt Sub-regions: Csongrád, Kistelek, Pusztamérges, Móraha- lom. Hajos-Baja Mostly red wine from Kadarka, Cabernet and others. Rather extreme. Susceptible to frost damage. In most places loess soil, with surface sand on meadow clay. Kunsag Varied and extreme. Summer droughts, extremely cold winters, and sharp winter and autumn frosts are frequent. White: Olaszrizling, Ezerjo, Chardonnay. Red: Kekofrankos, Kekoporto, Kadarka, Cab Sub-regions: Bacska, Cegled, Dunamente, Iszak, Jaszsag, Kecskemet- Kiskunfelegyhaz, Kiskoros, Kiskunhalas-Kiskunmajsa, Monor, iszamente.
