ABSTRACT Three native weevils have become increasingly important in recent years in stands of planted pines in southern Ontario. The pine root collar weevil, Hyldbius radicis finch., breeds in the root collar of healthy pines, killing over 90% of the trees in some plantations. The pales weevil, H. pales (Hbst.), and the northern pine weevil, Pissodes approximates Hopk., are important because the adults, feeding on the tender bark of twigs and small branches of healthy pines, kill the branches or even the whole tree. The life histories and bionomics of the three species were determined from natural populations in the field and colonies in the insectary. These studies were facilitated by a special technique devised for rearing the weevils permitting continuous observation's of larval and pupal development and periodic measurement of body size and larval feeding. Raffal ABSTRACT Pitfall traps with above-ground silhouettes of various colors and diameters were used in field tests to evaluate the role of vision in host orientation by adult pales weevils, Hylobius pales, and pitch-eating weevils, Pachylobius picivorus. White traps (11 em outer diameter) baited with ethanol and turpentine caught significantly more weevils than similarly baited black or green traps (11 cm outer diameter). Trap diameter (range of 6-22 cm outer diameter) did not affect trap catch. -

Department of C^To^^dk^ The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Date ABSTRACT The distribution, population ecology, behavior and host interactions of the root weevil, Hylobius warreni Wood were investigated in lodgepole pine forests in Alberta. Highest incidence of the weevil occurs in the.Lower Foothills Section cf the Boreal Forest Region, between 2,500 and 4,000 feet in elevation. In even-aged forests weevil numbers are distributed according to stand maturity, stand density, tree size and duff depth. Interactions between these variables modify the patterns of abundance in different stands. Attack incidence upon the host varies, being highest in the collar zone and least on lateral roots. -

We captured a total of 1592 weevils representing 65 species, including at least 21 Holarctic or introduced species in North America. In and around the raspberry plantation, the com monest species collected by the two methods were the short-nosed weevils of subfamilies Otiorhynchinae and Thylacitinae, mainly generalist species with root-feeding larvae. -

Alexander Plant pathology, Physiology and Weed Science (ABSTRACT) Studies were undertaken to determine the dispersal mechanisms of Verticicladiella procera Kendrick, the causal agent of Procera Root Disease (PRD). Propagule germinability in artificially infested soil decrease rapidly under natural and controlled condi- tions. Colonization of seedlings in artificially infested soil was rare and symptoms were not displayed by coloniz- ed seedlings. Natural populations of V. procera were closely associated with colonized root tissue. Colonization of field planted seedlings was related to proximity to root collars of diseased trees and insect activity on the seedlings. Insects (Coleoptera) contaminated with y. PI:.Q_cera were found in plantations both with and without PRD. The percent of weevils and bark beetles contaminated with V. procera was 64 and 0.76 respectively. Verticicladiella procera was transmitted to white pine bolts in the field and under controlled conditions following visitation by contaminated insects. Verticicladiella procera was associated with larval galleries and frass in trap bolts and was observed fruiting in insect galleries in root systems of diseased trees. -
