Excessive settlements of a road embankment adjoining a bridge abutment founded on piles to firm ground was then successfully halted by replacing a 1 m layer of road aggregate with blocks of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS). Boards of EPS had previously been successfully tested in road structures over several years in a major research project related to Frost Action in Soils. The use of Geofoam blocks for lightweight fill purposes, reduced earth pressure and several other applications for a variety of Civil Engineering purposes, has since been adopted and further developed in many countries worldwide. In this article the state of the art regarding various applications of Geofoam blocks are shown based on available information supplied by the authors.
