EXCURSIONS BY CAR OR MC 168 km (104 miles) – Fjord and mountain 613 Balestrand – Gaularfjellet – Viksdalen – 610-Sande - E39-Vadheim – 55-Høyanger – Balestrand This is the shortest excursion, but by no means at the expense of marvelous nature! The first 84 km (52 miles) is national Scenic Route. You start off driving around the fjord Esefjorden with high mountains close by. After half an hour you start climbing the mountain Gaularfjellet to the view point Utsikten where you of course will stop and admire the view. Fifteen minutes later you make another stop at the waterfall Likholefossen. You may cross the roaring waterfall on foot by using the pedestrian bridge. More spectacular nature along the lake Viksdalsvatnet to Sande. On the way to Vadheim you have high mountains on both sides. From Vadheim to Balestrand you drive along the Sognefjorden. A stop in the industrial town of Høyanger is recommended. It is around 50 minutes to the ferry place Nordeide and the ferry crossing to Ortnevik on the south side of the fjord. The ferry does not run that often, so remember to check the timetable! It’s a small ferry, so remember to make a reservation by calling (+47) 415 36 317. The 56 km (35 miles), about a 1 hour drive, from Ortnevik to Oppedal is narrow with fantastic view all the way. The car ferry to Lavik takes you across the fjord back to the north side before you continue to Balestrand. A stop in the industrial town of Høyanger is recommended. After about 15 minutes you will of course stop at the view point Utsikten before descending the steep and curvy road down to the fjord and on to Balestrand. 251 km (156 miles) – up and down mountains: view, view and more view 55 Balestrand – Dragsvik – car ferry to Vangsnes – 13-Vinje – E16-Stalheim – Stalheimskleiva – Flåm – Aurland – 5627 Aurlandsfjellet – Stegastein – Lærdal – 5-Fodnes – car ferry to Mannheller – Sogndal – 55-Hella – car ferry to Dragsvik – Balestrand Note: the mountain road Aurlandsfjellet is normally open 1 June – 15 October. After a 10 minute drive to Dragsvik you get on the car ferry across the fjord to Vangsnes. A stop at the statue of the viking Fridtjof the Bold in Vangsnes is recommended. The statue is 10.5 meters (34.5 feet) tall and is standing on a 12 meters (39 feet) tall platform. The statue was a gift from the German emperor, Wilhelm, in 1913. He was a regular guest in Balestrand for many years. Now it is time to climb the mountain Vikafjellet. A stop at the sharp turn, «Storesvingen», provides stunning view over Vik and the fjord. Just before the tunnel you make another stop to enjoy the view. In Vinje you go left at the roundabout. Remember to stop at Stalheim Hotel where the view of the valley is fantastic. Now you descend the 1.6 km (1 mile) Stalheimskleivi with 14 hairpin turns and 18% grade. A stop in Flåm is recommended before climbing the steep and curvy road to the mountain road Aurlandsfjellet. You will of course stop at the view point Stegasteinen with stunning view overlooking the fjord. The highest point, 1306 meters (4285 feet) above sea level, gives a fantastic view of Jotunheimen. Descending to Lærdal is also narrow and curvy. At the ferry place Fodnes you cross the fjord to Mannheller before you continue through Sogndal along the fjord back home to Balestrand. 231 km (144 miles) – fjord and mountain with Jølster og Fjærland 55 Balestrand – Dragsvik – 613-Gaularfjellet – Rørvikfjellet – Moskog – E39-Skei i Jølster – Vassenden – 451-Sørisida av Jølstravatnet – Kjøsnes – 5-Fjærland – Sogndal – 55-Hella – car ferry to Dragsvik – Balestrand The first 92 km (57 miles) is national Scenic Route. Maybe a stop at Astruptunet? And in Fjærland you will stop at Bøyabreen, right after the tunnel. How about a visit at the glacier museum and a short detour to the village center? Ascending from Fjærland you make a stop at the resting area and view point Berge with wonderful view overlooking Fjærland and the fjord before continuing through the valley Sogndalsdalen to Sogndal and along the Sognefjorden back home to Balestrand. This is a small ferry not running that often. So it’s a good idea to make a reservation by calling (+47) 992 78 837 or [email protected]. A visit at the Urnes stave church from around 1140 AD is a “must do”. You may stop and take a look at the 218 meter (715 feet) tall Feigefossen. It is a 1.6 km (1 mile), around 45 minutes walk to the water fall. From Skjolden to Turtagrø, 900 meters (2953 ft) above sea level is a national Scenic Road. You may stop at Turtagrø Hotel. The 32 km (20 miles) long mountain road Tindevegen to Årdal is a marvellous experience: You will make several stops to enjoy the view! Descending to Øvre Årdal is steep, curvy and narrow! You continue along the fjord to Fodnes and get on the car ferry to Mannheller before continuing along the Sognefjorden back home to Balestrand. 282 km (175 miles) – to the coast with fjord and mountain 55 Balestrand – Vadheim – E39 Lavik – 607-Leirvik – Hellevik – Flekke – 57-Dale – Osen bru – 610- Dale – Sande – Viksdalen – 613-Gaularfjellet - Balestrand You drive along the fjord Sognefjorden, to Lavik before you continue on narrow roards to Leirvik and on to Salbu (just before Sørbøvågen), through «the forest» to Hellevik.
