An easy, breezy read about the biggest bands that defined extreme metal, much of it in their own words. How it intrinsically is an underground scene but still there will always be people that resonate in a weird way with this artistic expression. A decidedly minor sub-genre of rock gets the mainstream treatment in "Choosing Death," a book whose lucid storytelling and good humor almost succeed in camouflaging the fact that its subject is bands obsessed with genocide, cruelty, violence and, well, death. My only complaint was the heavy emphasis on Napalm Death and Carcass. Dive in and enjoy the proper story of this passionate international scene. Possibly a bit too deep a dive for those who aren't already invested in the genres but mandatory reading for even occasional fans. It can be argued that no strand of extreme metal with a touch of hardcore and post-punk tossed in for flavouringhas had so big an impact outside the gated community of patch-jackets and circle-pits as grindcore has in the UK. I'm a huge death metal fan, if you're intowondering how the whole, death and grindcore metal genres startedthis is itthis book mentions the beginnings of grindcore bands like Napalm death, Repulsion, then the origins of death metalthe pioneers such As Possesed, deathmorbid angel. Whether you've loved the book or not, if you give your honest and detailed thoughts then people will find new books that are right for them. I could have used a little more analysis of the music itself. .
