Anthony Di Mascio 37 CROSS-BORDER SCHOOLING AND THE COMPLEXITY OF LOCAL IDENTITIES IN THE QUEBEC-VERMONT BORDERLAND REGION: A HISTORICAL ANALYSIS Anthony Di Mascio1, Assistant Professor, School of Education Bishop’s University Abstract This paper examines the history of cross-border education in the Eastern Townships of Quebec and Northern Vermont borderland region. Considering that the legal and administrative jurisdiction over schooling rests at the provincial and state levels, the sharing of schools along an international borderline raises challenging questions about the administrative and cultural history of education. This paper argues that by crossing educational boundaries, the people of the borderland region challenge us to rethink three strongly held assumptions in public schooling’s history: first, that school advocates in Canada were motivated to establish public schools in order to counter the threat of American republicanism; second, that Quebec education has been rigidly divided between French and English systems; and third, that the Canada-U.S. borderline represents a clear demarcation between social and political views and values. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the tension between mystical ( haqTqT) and romantic (majazT) conceptions of love in the Punjabi qissa tradition before the end of the eighteenth century. All the texts under consideration date from before the third quarter of the eighteenth century and, therefore, both predate and inform the classical qissa tradition of the nineteenth century. The texts narrate three of the most commonly represented love stories in pre twentieth century Punjab, two of them versions of local folk legends and one an episode from the Quran. A total of six texts are considered in the thesis: Hafiz Barkhurdar's Mirza Sahiba, Siddlq Tail's Yusuf Zulatkha, and the versions of HTr by Ahmad, Muqbil and Varis Shah. -

Sufis, Sufism and Religion: A Comparative Study of Guru Nanak’s and Sheikh Farid’s PJRS, Vol., 56, No2, July –December 2019) Journal of the Research Society of Pakistan Volume No. 56, Issue No.2 (July –December, 2019) Sumera Safdar* Muhammad Iqbal Chawla** Robina Shoeb*** Sufis, Sufism and Religion: A Comparative Study of Guru Nanak’s thoughts and approaches with those of Sheikh Farid’s Abstract Sufism is regarded as a unique style of understanding the existence of the Supreme Power (God) and practicing His orders for the betterment of the Society. In the medieval times, Sufism in India evolved into a refined form when Muslim, Hindu and Sikh Saints spelt out almost identical thoughts which benefited humanity. Out of this interaction, a new interpretation about Sufism and religion was brought forth by Baba Guru Nanak. Mostly, his sayings, messages and actions are recorded in the Granth Sahib. His philosophical thoughts and practices originated a new religion which is known as Sikhism. This religion is one of the major religions in the world. The holy book of the Sikh religion contains several pieces of writings of many thinkers, philosophers and Sufis. One such Muslim Sufi is Ghulam Farid Shakar Ganj whose poetry contains significant share in the Di Granth. Farid’s bani (special kind of poetry) invoke the inward mystical philosophy with different outward expression. He stresses on the self-realization for God’s realization. His poetry and mystical thoughts left a deep impact on the thought process and practices of Baba Guru Nanak. This study attempts to understand the philosophy and practices of Sufism in the medieval times. -

He completed his primary education in Newcastle School, Limerick. He went to Spring Field College for his further studies and he completed his graduation from Queen’s college, Galway in 1862. He studied Greek and Latin classic in the original. He also read French and Italian2. In this way he received a broad humanistic education. In the same year he was selected for civil services in Punjab, India3. He reached there in February 1864 and started his services. He became Deputy Commissioner in 1882 and after two year he became Divisional Judge4. He thoroughly studied sub-bids of Indian languages e.g. Sanskrit, Prakrit, Arabic, Persian, Marathi, Gujrati, Punjabi etc. Shortly after arriving in Punjab, he went to attend a Diwali celebration in Amritsar and from there his interest in Sikhism was sparked and he got attracted towards Sikhism. He wanted to know more about Sikhism so; he started to study Sikhism and hymns of Gurus and Bhagats. He was deeply engaged in the study and could not leave it afterwards. He was indulged in judicial work till 1893. On the request of some representatives of Sikh societies he resigned from his post of divisional judge5. He resigned his post earlier so that he can give enough time to the sympathetic study of Sikhism and Sikh history.
