It centers on the Guru –Sikh [teacher -disciple] relationship, which is considered to be sacred. The development of Sikhism is a remarkable story of a socio- religious movement which under the leadership of ten human Gurus’ developed into a well organized force in Punjab.1Conceived in northern India, this belief system preached and propagated values of universalism, liberalism, humanism and pluralism within the context of a “medieval age.” Its teachings were “revealed’ by Guru Nanak (1469-1539 AD) who was, in turn, succeeded by nine other Gurus’. -

Guru Nanak Dev – Guru Nānak) (15 April 1469 ﮔروﻨاﻨﮏ :Guru Nanak [1] (Punjabi: ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ, Hindi: गुरु नानक, Urdu 22 September 1539) was the founder of the religion of Sikhism and the first of ten Sikh Gurus. Sikhs believe that all subsequent Gurus possessed Guru Nanak’s divinity and religious authority. // Biography Early life Guru Nanak Dev was born on 15 April 1469, [2] now celebrated as Prakash Divas of Guru Nanak Dev, into a Bedi Kshatriya family in the village of Rāi Bhōi dī Talwandī, now called Nankana Sahib, near Lahore, Pakistan. [3] Today, his birthplace is marked by Gurdwara Janam Asthan. (Some are of the opinion that 20 October is his enlightenment day rather than his birthday.) His father, Mehta Kalyan Das Bedi, popularly shortened to Kalu Mehta, [4] was the patwari (accountant) of crop revenue for the village of Talwandi in the employmenty of a Muslim landlord of that area, Rai Bular Bhatti. [5] Guru Nanak’s mother was Tripta Devi and he had one elder sister, Bebe Nanaki. Nanaki married Jai Ram and went to his town of Sultanpur, where he was the steward (modi) to Daulat Khan Lodi, the eventual governor of Lahore. Guru Nanak was attached to his older sister, and, in a traditional Indian fashion, he followed her to Sultanpur to live with her and Jai 1 / 9 Guru Nanak Dev Ram. Guru Nanak also found work with Daulat Khan, when he was around 16 years old. This became a formative time for Guru Nanak, as the Puratan Janam Sakhi suggests, and as evidenced in his numerous allusions to governmental structure in his hymns, most likely gained at this time. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the tension between mystical ( haqTqT) and romantic (majazT) conceptions of love in the Punjabi qissa tradition before the end of the eighteenth century. All the texts under consideration date from before the third quarter of the eighteenth century and, therefore, both predate and inform the classical qissa tradition of the nineteenth century. The texts narrate three of the most commonly represented love stories in pre twentieth century Punjab, two of them versions of local folk legends and one an episode from the Quran. A total of six texts are considered in the thesis: Hafiz Barkhurdar's Mirza Sahiba, Siddlq Tail's Yusuf Zulatkha, and the versions of HTr by Ahmad, Muqbil and Varis Shah. -

The Journal of the Irish Society for the Academic Study of Religions 4 (2017) 1 © ISASR 2017 Christopher SHACKLE & Brian BOCKING Representing Sikhism: Essays in Memory of the Irish scholar Max Arthur Macauliffe ABSTRACT: This is an introduction, by the guest editors, to the special issue of JISASR (Vol 4, 2017) entitled ‘Representing Sikhism: Essays in Memory of the Irish Scholar Max Arthur Macauliffe’. The genesis of this special issue lies in pioneering work on Macauliffe’s Irish identity and personal and scholarly life undertaken by Professor Tadhg Foley (Galway). The active interest and support of members of the Sikh community in Ireland led to a conference, hosted by the Study of Religions Department at University College Cork, held to mark the centennial of Macauliffe’s death on 15 March 1913. After some brief comments on past and present trends in the study of Ireland-Asia connections in the field of religions, we discuss Macauliffe’s significance for modern representations of Sikhism and offer some contextual observations on each of the four papers. The article concludes with a brief resumé of the 2013 conference at which the papers were originally presented. KEYWORDS: Macauliffe, Representing Sikhism, Ireland, conference, special issue. Christopher SHACKLE is Emeritus Professor of Modern Languages of South Asia at SOAS, University of London. He has published widely in the fields of South Asian linguistics, literature and religious studies. Sufis, Sufism and Religion: A Comparative Study of Guru Nanak’s and Sheikh Farid’s PJRS, Vol., 56, No2, July –December 2019) Journal of the Research Society of Pakistan Volume No. 56, Issue No.2 (July –December, 2019) Sumera Safdar* Muhammad Iqbal Chawla** Robina Shoeb*** Sufis, Sufism and Religion: A Comparative Study of Guru Nanak’s thoughts and approaches with those of Sheikh Farid’s Abstract Sufism is regarded as a unique style of understanding the existence of the Supreme Power (God) and practicing His orders for the betterment of the Society. In the medieval times, Sufism in India evolved into a refined form when Muslim, Hindu and Sikh Saints spelt out almost identical thoughts which benefited humanity. Out of this interaction, a new interpretation about Sufism and religion was brought forth by Baba Guru Nanak. Mostly, his sayings, messages and actions are recorded in the Granth Sahib. His philosophical thoughts and practices originated a new religion which is known as Sikhism. This religion is one of the major religions in the world. The holy book of the Sikh religion contains several pieces of writings of many thinkers, philosophers and Sufis. One such Muslim Sufi is Ghulam Farid Shakar Ganj whose poetry contains significant share in the Di Granth. Farid’s bani (special kind of poetry) invoke the inward mystical philosophy with different outward expression. He stresses on the self-realization for God’s realization. His poetry and mystical thoughts left a deep impact on the thought process and practices of Baba Guru Nanak. This study attempts to understand the philosophy and practices of Sufism in the medieval times. -

Max Arthur Macauliffe: Sikh Scholar, Reformer, and Evangelist ABSTRACT: Max Arthur Macauliffe, originally Michael McAuliffe (1838-1913), Indian Civil Servant, judge, and Sikh scholar, was born in Glenmore, Monagea, Co. Limerick, Ireland. He graduated from Queen’s College Galway in 1860 and began his colonial career in India in 1864. He became Assistant Commissioner and Judicial Assistant in the Punjab, then Deputy Commissioner, and finally a Divisional Judge. Born a Catholic, when he lived in Amritsar Macauliffe became deeply interested in the Sikh religion. He learned the languages of the Sikh scripture, the Adi Granth, and did the classic translation of major parts of it into English. In 1909 the Clarendon Press published his celebrated work, The Sikh Religion: Its Gurus, Sacred Writings and Authors, in six volumes.
