ACADEMIA FILM OLOMOUC #AFO #AFO 52 INDUSTRY 4SCIENCE

Thanks to the digital revolution of the 21st century, popu larization of science field develops with an exceptional speed. The Industry 4Science programme focuses not only on new technological trends, inventions of documentary narrative or new media innovations, but also on the role of science commu nicators and their methods of science popularization. This year the programme provides a backstage insight of unique projects in the process of their development, production and distribution stages. In the Industry section, local experts and world leaders in the popularization of science focus on the most attractive and entertaining ways of how to share scientifc information. Petr Jan Juračka, the 2016 world record holder in drone flying at high altitude, presents a multimedia show including a demonstration of a new drone model. With hundreds of thousands of subscrib ers, YouTube social influencers such as Vanessa Hill (BrainCraft) and Anna Rothschild (Gross Science) provide a unique insight into the content and production aspects of developing and presenting science videos on social networks. At Fort Science, delegation from distant Chile represents diversity within the gen re in the South American flm industry. The essential part of this section consists of festival guests, for whom Industry 4Science creates a platform within which they have the opportunity for networking and pitching their new projects. Professionals from the audiovisual industry and festival organizators meet scientifc experts, creating a dynamic energy which is unique for the at mosphere of AFO. Because where else do you get the chance to meet science stars, represented for example by Richard Dawkins himself? Besides Industry programme section mentioned above, 4Science platform also offers a workshop Camp 4Science which focuses on the development of upcoming science documentary flms. The goal of Camp 4Science workshop is to create an international training and co-fnancing event focused mainly on the development and funding of science documentary flms. During the six day programme, participating directors and producers will develop the subject, storytelling, graphic tools and visual style of their projects, as well as learning about budgeting, determining the most suitable funding possibilities, festivals and sales. Once again in 2017 we are here to discuss, develop, take apart your science documentary projects and help you to build them back together again. Our aim is to encourage local production, co-productions and general interest in science in the audiovisual form. We value courage and curiosity, detailed work and creativity. Once again we are very happy to welcome our wonderful and extremely experienced tutors like Christine Reisen, Dinah Lord, Hana Křepelková Rezková or Gabriel Turkieh (and more), who will help you to fnd what you are searching for and offer you supportive, yet critical, comments and advice.

18 Industry 4Science EXTREME SHOTS AND DRONES IN THE WORLD

LECTURE Petr Jan Juračka

South Africa and Lesotho, the Austrian Alps, the Krkonoše Mountains, Příbram’s underground or Bohemian Switzerland. These are the destinations where the natural scientist and pho tographer Petr Jan Juračka, from the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Charles University, prepared himself for his lifelong dream – to climb the second-highest mountain in the world, K2 in Pakistan. He ventured there alongside the best female Czech alpine climber, Klára Kolouchová. As it is typical for Peter, he made sure to pack a video camera slider and a drone, with which he estab lished a new world record in flying at high altitudes. Petr brought 87 kg of flm equipment to Pakistan altogether, and the result was worth every gram. After K2, more extreme flights followed. For instance, the highest African mountain, Kilimanjaro, and the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest. This entertaining as well as educational talk will be one big multimedia show enriched with a demonstration of the latest DJI Mavic drone.

19 Industry 4Science FROM LAB TO TV – ONE WAY TICKET?

LECTURE Monika Aksamit- Koperska, Darek Aksamit

Two science communicators Monika and Darek will describe the emerging profession of science communicator in Poland. Moni ka, speaking from her own perspective, will focus on her story as she went from a locked in a lab scientist to a popular TV and Internet science presenter. Trying to do the impossible: combine the life of a lab-based research, travelling science populariser and caring parent, she will point out the obstacles she faced. She will highlight the dilemmas and problems that scientists have to overcome when trying to speak to masses using media as their loudspeaker. Darek will give you an overview of the Polish situation of science popularisation via television or Internet videos and will discuss problems of mixing science and politics. He will give his solution – an association of active scientists that are not afraid to speak what they know loud and clear. Not in a voice of “know it all” science celebrities, but as numerous ex perts from different felds. Goal: growth of the knowledge based society in Poland.

20 Industry 4Science CROSSING THE EQUATOR – POPULARIZING SCIENCE IN THE FAR SOUTH

PANEL Gaston Chedufau, Ricardo Garcia, Isabel Rosemblatt, María Angélica (Panchi) Sepúlveda Medina, Rosario JIménez Gili

Thousands of kilometers of coastline, Antarctic territory, the cleanest skies on Earth and the most arid desert in the world... you name it! Beyond its culture and society, this is Chile: The natural lab. Right here exists a community of local and foreign scientists developing research projects in many felds and push ing the boundaries of knowledge. The Chilean Science Prods. HUB is a group of flmmakers building a bridge between science and it’s audiences through innovative audiovisual language and formats. Some of their work will be shown at the festival, with their projects in development being presented in the Camp 4Science section. But in this panel, diversity in science commu nication will be on display, from hosted TV shows to animation to astronomy and geology. By attending this session you’ll have the chance to take part in the AstroVlog feed and sneak a peek into science popularisation in the other hemisphere.

21 Industry 4Science USING SCIENCE COMMUNICATION TO SAVE THE PLANET – STORIES FROM A GREEN CAPITAL

LECTURE Chris Dunford

The UK’s At-Bristol Science Centre is one of the leading science centres in the world for tackling sustainability issues and was centre stage for Bristol’s year as European Green Capital 2015. At-Bristol’s approach is to work hard to become sustainable themselves and then use that journey to engage the public with the larger global issues. Join Sustainability Engagement Ma nager Chris Dunford to look at the techniques, challenges and benefts of educating the public in some of the most important issues of our time, such as climate change, biodiversity and resources. Using examples of public engagement projects on sustainability topics from the science centre and the city as a Green Capital, Chris will share tips for best practice by looking at their successes and failures along the way, and explore how science centres are now working together globally in this area. Expect solar trees, tweeting bees, alien visitors, green technolo gies, graffiti art, giant whales and robotic artists.

22 Industry 4Science PETER’S WILDERNESS

LECTURE Petr Jan Juračka

Petr Jan Juračka is a scientist working at the Faculty of Science of Charles University, where he focuses on photographing the microscopic world and produces short science documentary flms, with the very frst one winning an award at the NF Neu ron competition for best popularisation video. This led him to hosting his own science popularisation show on television. However, it would not be him if his show Peter’s Wilderness did not pull out all the stops to create something unique. Petr writes his own screenplays, shoots his own flms, does the audio pro duction and mixing and hosts the episodes himself too. By now you can probably guess who does the editing of his footage… This discussion about the production of this one man show will be full of technical know-how and production tips.

23 Industry 4Science HOW TO NONDRAW SCIENCE?

LECTURE Marta Dlouhá

NONdrawn Science is returning back to AFO after a year. This cycle of animated popular-science videos unique in the Czech environment, made by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, which started in 2014, has expanded with another se ries. Ten new episodes will cover current topics in the sphere of the natural and technical sciences, as well as scientifc classics. All of the episodes are followed by unmistakable voice-over by Pavel Liška. How did it all begin? Who created it and who is it intended for? You can learn all of this on the panel How to NON- draw science? combined with screening of selected episodes; this is a rare chance to see them on the big screen rather than the small monitor of your computer.

24 Industry 4Science OUR HERITAGE TODAY

PRESENTATION Kýr

One of the features of advanced cultures is their care for their cultural and historical heritage. A memory imprinted into a build ing or a work of art can connect generations separated by the void of time. The project Monuments Today revives cultural and historical heritage in an unprecedented way. A chosen monu ment becomes the protagonist in one of the documentary flms hosted by a carefully chosen character, which can pass key facts on to the viewers in an entertaining way. One time, it is a mer chant returning after many years abroad and reminiscing on the past, another time, we can take a peek at a restorer’s work and allow ourselves to be guided by her into places where the public usually cannot go. All the guides, both fctional and historical, share one trait – they do not give a lecture; they tell a story. Scripts are based on studies written by a historian, who oversees the correct ratio of accuracy to artistic invention. Over a relatively short period, visuals, sound, and literature combine to allow you to live through a piece of history.

25 Industry 4Science FROM OPAVA TO CANARY ISLANDS

PRESENTATION Martin Petrásek, Petr Jančárek, Jaromír Vašek, Tomáš Gráf, Jindřich Mižďoch, Ondřej Smékal, Pavel Suchan

The documentary Czech Canaries from author Jindřich Mižďoch gives a roadmap of Czech scientist partici pating at international science projects. Ondřej Smékal speaks about the current topic of light pollution through his project Where You Can Still See the Stars.

26 Industry 4Science INDUSTRY 4.0

LECTURE Radomír Eliáš

One of the elements of Industry 4.0 is ARIVR, enhanced and virtual reality HMI (Human Machine Interface), technologies our society develops across industries. Enhanced and virtual reality allows us to improve the ergonomics of industrial work ing processes. Each of these technologies simplifes work processes in a different sector. AREC Future focuses primarily on augmented reality, which can be utilized, for instance, in warehouse management, where our internal research uncovered improved methods of process acceleration and elimination of degenerative factors among staff, which in turn leads to fnancial savings. The potential of augmented reality extends to manu facturing, the training of new staff members and specialized service professions. It is also used in health services, education, civil engineering and the military. Modern-day HMI is touchless, and in combination with augmented reality enables quantitative improvements in working conditions. For this to happen how ever, legislation needs to be changed and source documents digitized.

27 Industry 4Science BORING CONFERENCE – THE ONLY CONFERENCE THAT CONTRADICTS ITS OWN TITLE!

CONFERENCE Petr Fridrich, Martin Vasquez, Jana Ecksteinová, Daniel Kunz

Originally, this conference was supposed to be devoted to an interesting and important topic – but everybody does that these days. Nobody pays attention to trivial and mundane topics, and that is why the Boring Conference is here today. The Boring Conference is based on a brand new stand-up comedy format, in which speakers parody popular conferences, employing intelli gent absurd humour. Once you are able to view any seemingly uninteresting topic from the right perspective, you discover that boring topics do not actually exist. That is why this conference, in fact, contradicts its own title. The new format is inspired by the Boring Conference, frst held in in 2011 by James Ward. It is also a continuation of many other activities connecting science, art, humour, and interest in unusual or marginal topics. One of the most well-known of these is the famous Ig Nobel Prize for unusual and trivial discoveries, and its associated platform Improbable Research.

28 Industry 4Science SCIENCE FOR LIFE – YOUNG SCIENTISTS OF PU POWERED BY PECHAKUCHA

PRESENTATION

An audiovisual course of Czech history, the mutual interaction of medical agents in human body and their influence on organs, a solution to deformities in limb areas, a cure for premature Parkinson’s disease, an exhibition of conceptual art in Olomouc, therapy for serious lung diseases, the distribution of hormones in vegetable tissues or using the particles of 3D structures in pharmaceutics. Some of the selected examples of 10 student projects supported by the Foundation Fund of PU. Its aim is to support outstanding international projects in the feld of junior science and arts with a signifcant contribution to society and also to encourage the development of presentation and popula risation skills of the students. The students have the opportunity to present their projects in front of an international audience, in the PechaKucha format. In 6’ 40’’, students will explain the content of their projects regarding the contribution to the feld, alma mater and the society.

29 Industry 4Science NEURON STORIES: THE ONLY PODCAST THAT WILL DRAW YOU INTO THE WORLD OF SCIENCE

PRESENTATION

Would a mathematic analyst compared himself or herself to a wolf or Little Red Riding Hood? Why does a chemist feel like James Bond and why do ninjas help him with his work? You do not have to feel frustrated by your efforts to understand the numbers, charts, or terminology used by scientists anymore. The audio podcasts and videos from Neuron Stories serve up the work of leading experts in a digestible form. What does the recording of such a series look like? Do scientists have to lower their demands on the audience in order to explain their work to laymen? Experience an interview with a scientist personally – follow us during the recording of one episode. We will ask scientists what helps them boost their thinking, what music they listen to while they contemplate complex topics and which part of the day brings the most discoveries. Look at the backstage of laboratories and get to know the people who work on research that might one day impact the lives of all of us.

34 Camp 4Science NEW TO SCIENCE FILM? PLEASE ENTER!

PANEL Christine Reisen, Dinah Lord, Hana Křepelková Rezková, Gabriel Turkieh and Michael Wolff

Are you about to enter the world of science documentary flms? What does it take and what the specifcs are there to be aware of? Original creative idea, in-depth research, detailed script – written and rewritten over and over, or use of animation or presenter. How much or how little information can the viewer perceive and how is the information transformed into visual form? Together with different fnancial sources, specialized TV slots, markets, and festivals. This all may sound like a distant universe that only otherwise experienced producers and flm makers from Central Europe might not hesitate to enter. Let’s do it together.

35 Camp 4Science POLARISED

CASE STUDY Aleksandra and Miroslaw Skowron

Welcome to the flm kitchen. One year and number of one-on- ones at international events later, Mirek and Ola, last year’s Camp 4Science participants, will share their experience of developing Polarised: a flm based on hundreds of hours of ar chive scientifc footage from Spitsbergen. With the interest from TVP and several other broadcasters, what will be the next steps on the production side? And how will they affect the way the material will be edited and enriched by newly shot material from Spitsbergen? This moderated interactive case study will show the unique process that hides behind their completed flm.

36 Camp 4Science FILM AND SCIENCE INSTITUTIONS – ALTERNATIVE FINANCIAL RESOURCES FOR FILM OR TWO SEPARATE UNIVERSES?

PANEL Gabriel Turkieh, Michael Wolff, Dinah Lord, Hana Křepelková Rezková, Christine Reisen

The session will bring specifc examples of areas how flm and the science funding money come together. In some cases flms are co-produced by broadcasters and museums, universities or science institutions, in other cases producers keep their flm production and audiovisual production for non-flm institutions separate. Why? What are the rules and recent practice in diverse European countries? And what are the prospects?

37 Camp 4Science FROM MUSEUM TO FILM
