YOU DID NOT CHOOSE ME, BUT I CHOSE YOU AND APPOINTED YOU TO GO AND BEAR FRUIT – FRUIT THAT WILL LAST. (John 15:16)

JESUS SAID, “UNLESS A KERNEL OF WHEAT FALLS TO THE GROUND AND DIES, IT REMAINS ONLY A SINGLE SEED. BUT IF IT DIES, IT PRODUCES MANY SEEDS. ANYONE WHO LOVES THEIR LIFE WILL LOSE IT, WHILE ANYONE WHO HATES THEIR LIFE IN THIS WORLD WILL KEEP IT FOR ETERNAL LIFE. WHOEVER SERVES ME MUST FOLLOW ME; AND WHERE I AM, MY SERVANT ALSO WILL BE. How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore. Psalm 133

Heroes didn’t leap tall buildings or stop bullets with an outstretched hand; they didn’t wear boots and capes. They bled and they bruised, and their superpowers were as simple as listening, or loving. Heroes were ordinary people who knew that even if their own lives were impossibly knotted, they could untangle someone else’s. And maybe that one act could lead someone to rescue you right back. Jodi Picoult, Second Glance

One of my favourite television shows in the 90’s was a sitcom called Cheers. The serial played around characters in a bar (which actually exists in Boston). What drew me to that series was the theme “where everyone knows your name, and they’re always glad you came”. Each episode featured characters facing personal crises, and finding comfort, friendship, and solace from other patrons at the bar. The comedic element was the idiosyncrasies and quirkiness of each character; few were likeable. Despite their ‘weirdness’, each person was embraced and welcomed at the bar.

The sitcom struck a chord deep in me: I often struggled with a fear of rejection, and longed for companionships that would accept me as I am. I dreamed of a community where I did not need to be the super-achiever or the saint, but where despite my obvious and not-so-obvious blemishes, everyone “was glad that I came”.

I dream this for Barker Road Methodist Church too. I dream of a church where everyone has a friend; I dream of a church where slights are quickly overlooked or forgiven; a church where every member wants to go to, not only because the preaching is superb or the worship anointed, but because they know that someone there is always glad that they came. Reading the Gospels, I know that God dreams of that too.

BRMC Welcome, New Staff: dr kevin lowe

Hello BRMC,

I have just joined the church as Pastoral Team Member (PTM) for missions. My wife Claire and I have 3 children, Titus, Tabitha, and Faith. We have all spent quite a bit of time (15 years) on the mission field, primarily in Cambodia with another year in Myanmar. We have just returned to Singapore for over a year now.

I served with the Trinity Annual Conference as an ordained elder, with The Methodist Missions Society as a missionary pastor, and until most recently as a tentmaker and utilizing business as missions.

During those years, God granted me the privilege to complete my post-graduate studies in and also in missions. Missions have always been my (and my wife’s) passion and calling. BRMC has much to offer in the field of world missions and it is my hope that we can be the best possible stewards of all that God has entrusted to us. We look forward to serving in BRMC. It is a joy to introduce myself as your new Pastoral Team Member (PTM) at Barker Road Methodist Church (BRMC). CREATIVE ARTS A wonderful night of song and dance to Christmas carols took place outside Tong MINISTRY (CAM) Building Plaza, Orchard Road on the night of December 20, 2014 from 8 to 9pm. celebrate This occasion was part of the annual Celebrate Christmas in Singapore (CCIS) event CHRISTMAS IN which began in 2004. CCIS has grown to become a hallmark of the Christian SINGAPORE community in Singapore in reaching out and blessing the community with the message of the love of Jesus on Orchard Road.

Members of our Creative Arts Ministry (CAM) have been most enthusiastic in being part of this event for the past nine years. This year, CAM Scriptures in Dance and Praise in Motion teams partnered with the Mandarin Ministry, the Glowing Years Ministry (GYM), the Filipino Ministry and the Youth Sunday School to help bring back the lost meaning of Christmas amidst the commercial festivities on Orchard Road. Here is the event in colourful photos.

The Creative Arts Ministry Scriptures in Dance (SD) team danced with colourful ribbon tabrets (hoops with colourful ribbons) and rainbow streamers to the contemporary rendition of the famous Isaac Watts hymn, “Joy to the World” by Shannon Wexelberg. This was the first of many in the one-hour slot filled with lively song and dance routines for CCIS. Our emcee for that evening was Marcia Fok.

INDONESIAN CONGREGATION The Indonesian service celebrated Christmas on 21st December 2014. The theme for the joyful evangelistic service was “Down from His Glory”. Rev Moses Alegesan, who is a familiar figure christmas to the congregation, shared God’s Word that morning. The main text was taken from Luke 2:1-21, and references were made to other texts in the Bible to show Jesus in His glory. Centuries earlier, the glorious birth of Jesus was mentioned in Isaiah 40:5 among others. Indonesian Ministry Staff Famajati Sastro writes an account of that morning with photos.

Rev Alegesan elaborated that all religions Above: The Indonesian Congregation that eventful morning teach good things, but only Jesus is the truth. Below: Rev Alegesan giving an altar call For God so loved the world that He sent His one and only Son to come down from all His glory to walk in the form of a man so that those who believe in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Glancing around, we could see joyful faces as we celebrated Jesus’ birth. God’s joy and peace transcend the hardships, struggles and personal tragedies that many of them suffer from. More than 10 people responded during altar call. For some, this could be the beginning of God’s work in their lives – to heal their broken hearts that they may be renewed in the spirit of their minds. For others, it could be the continuation of the work that the Holy Spirit had begun in their lives. Indeed, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3) House of Salvation page 11 uphill & beyond ISSUE 2, 2015

Presentation of the song “Tak Satupun”

Worshipping God in a mood of celebration, a vocal group presented a song entitled “Tak Satupun” (“No one and nothing”). The lyrics describe God as our true good friend; no one can be compared to God and nothing can separate us from God’s love.

Above: Dancing with Tabret to “Yesus Kekasih Jiwaku” We also relished the presentation of a dance accompanied by the song “Yesus Kekasih Jiwaku” (“Jesus the Beloved of my Soul”). The dance group put months of effort into the rehearsals with the kind help from the Creative Arts Ministry, which we are most grateful for. It was a beautiful worship expressed through dance. After the service, we had a gift exchange which invoked a lot of hilarious laughter. A sumptuous lunch of Indonesian buffet closed the happy event.

We trust that many lives have been touched at this Christmas service, and we pray for the seeds that have been sown.

Distributing Christmas gifts and refreshments to the residents At the end of each third Friday ministry to Sunlove Home, I am reminded of Colossians 3:17, that when we serve and offer our concern and care, we must remember that in all things we are doing it for our Lord Jesus Christ.

Even if at times, we are not appreciated for what we do, we can be comforted that our Lord is pleased with our actions and His Name be praised. We must appreciate at the same time that our Lord has already abundantly rewarded us with His peace, grace and love. Amen! House of Bread page 18 uphill & beyond ISSUE 2, 2015

DISCIPLESHIP & NURTURE The Christian Believer Programme (CBP) seeks to deepen the believer’s MINISTRY (D&N) understanding on the teachings of Christ and to mature and grow believers CHRISTIAN BELIEVER: to know God with the heart and mind. It is conducted by the Discipleship and A MOMENT WITH Nurture Ministry on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Church worshipper Lim GOD OUR CREATOR Peck Hoon who attends the 8.30am service and the Wednesday evening CBP sessions, shares how the course has shaped the practice of her faith and her views.

“I joined BRMC’s 30-week Christian Believer Programme (CBP) in January 2015. At one of our sessions, our facilitator assigned me the task of writing a 21st century psalm about my worship to God as Creator. The week’s reading in preparation for discussion on “God our Creator” included Psalm 19: “The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of His hands.... There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.” (v1-3). I chose to write about how the silent walls of the Grand Canyon spoke volumes to me about the work of God way back in 1987; as did the rushing waters of the Mckenzie Falls in Victoria and the giant Sequoias in Yosemite. And now, each time as I pause to see the sky, I know in my heart that the God who created man is at work still, painting the colours in the sky and shaping the clouds to make them beautiful, just for me. Here is the poem that I shared with my fellow participants of the CBP on February 4, 2015.”

Lim Peck Hoon

A Moment with God our Creator

Do I hear His voice in the silent Canyon walls? Can I feel His power in calm and quiet seas? Will I be still in the rushing waterfalls? Does my heart move with sturdy rooted trees?

When I tune my soul to songs of birds When I touch His Spirit in the fleeting breeze When I pause with eyes turned heavenwards And bow my heart to God as I do my knees

What of the future What of the past What a very present posture How I wish it will ever last

A moment in Your presence, Lord To feel You in my heart and mind To know that You are God And that You are good and kind

I sit at Your footstool In quiet solitude My soul connects with the beautiful In joy and simple gratitude House of Bread page 19 uphill & beyond ISSUE 2, 2015

“I attended the LCEC Retreat for the first time, representing WSCS (Women’s Society for Christian Service).

It was very heartening to see so many fellow worshippers from different ministries in our church, come together for a time of reflection and sharing.

Lui Chong Chee, our LCEC chairman reminded us of who our awesome God is, through beautiful photos of the billion stars, Grace (top middle) exchanging her ideas with her group members Milky Way and the galaxies….I was transported into space momentarily and felt lost in this vast Universe. I wondered …”What does God want of me?”

God, our Creator, wants to have a personal relationship with each of us and He wants us to draw close to Him. I was reminded that we need to come before Him in humility, seek Him and submit to Him. Pastor-In-Charge, Rev Dr Chiu Ming Li said that we must not stifle God but open up to Him and submit to His plans and purposes for our life.

I have learnt to pray as Moses did in Exodus 33:13: “If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know You and continue to find favor with You.” I was assured with the Lord’s reply to Moses in verse 14 “My Presence will go with you and I will give you rest.”

It was with some hesitation that I attended this “Whichever ministry we serve in, Retreat but I was glad to have joined fellow church we must seek God to know His ways, members in this precious time reflecting on the topic “Be Still”. When our hearts are still in God, we will submit to Him in humility of heart serve in humility because He is our focus.” and develop an attitude of respect Grace Chiam for others as we serve together.” House of Prayer page 26 uphill & beyond ISSUE 2, 2015

“This was my first time at an LCEC Retreat. I was encouraged and inspired by the sharing from the LCEC Chairman Lui Chong Chee and the Lay Leader Choe Peng Sum. Their messages reminded me to seek God in His Word and to be intimate with Him. It was heartwarming to see all the leaders from different ministries sacrificing their time to gather together before God and to be blessed by each other’s company. In the beginning I was rather afraid to attend as I wondered if I could fit in amongst all the leaders but the time at the retreat was so rewarding that I enjoyed myself and will not hesitate to attend the next LCEC retreat, if invited.”

Rev Edmund Koh closing the prayer session with us holding hands (below) as we worshipped God with the song “Won’t You Lord.”

“As I walked into Wesley Hall for the LCEC retreat on the 21st of March, I was convinced I was the youngest person there (indeed, I was) and felt like shying away from everyone else’s scope of vision (for a while, indeed, I did). I really didn’t have to, though – the warmth we experienced during the retreat was very welcoming. The retreat was nothing like I had imagined it might be; instead of a day of intense atmosphere, there was laughter and amicable conversation; instead of top-down updates, there was sharing from all ministries; instead of rigid rushing from one item on the itinerary to the next, there was silence and solitude; most significantly, instead of intense banter of issues within the church, there was simple prayer.

In his first letter to the church of Corinth, Paul reminds us that our faith should not rest in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God (1 Corinthians 2:5). Our posture of collective prayer was so legitimate because throughout the day, representatives from every ministry in the church Earnestly seeking Him in prayer turned the faces of our hearts to the heavens seeking HIS guidance. We were not seeking assurance or commendation for the work that was being done, but rebuke for the things that had to be changed.

We looked at Haggai, and the command to rebuild the temple of God. Are we building God’s house or our own house? Do we have God’s intentions or our own ‘good’ intentions at heart? And in seeking God’s will, are we truly humble enough to sit in His presence, truly listen and obey His voice?

Perhaps my largest takeaway from this retreat is a reminder that our church is not made of our pastoral team, or our LCEC, or our leaders. No, our church is made of all of us, and we each hold equal responsibility to pray for our church. As we continue to build up our church, I have made my decision to pray more fervently not just for the endeavours of the ministries I serve in or for our own church, but for the larger universal church as well. ” Ellisa Sayampanathan top left with her group at discussion time Ellissa Sayampanathan House of Prayer page 27 uphill & beyond ISSUE 2, 2015

BRMC Did you know that “Grace Notes”, a new choir celebrated her 1st Anniversary GRACE NOTES CHOIR: in December 2014? This choir leads worship at the Saturday 5pm Service LOVE OUR MASTER, every second Saturday of the month. Here is a report by Lee Soek Koon KNOW OUR MUSIC written in praise and thanksgiving to God for His hand in nurturing the faith and developing the talents of the members of the choir. In photos and heartfelt sharing, Soek Koon reports Grace Notes member’s journey of faith in stepping out of their comfort zones to worship God with choral singing.

Grace Notes Choir at the Saturday 5pm Service at Christmas time The Bible says “it is more blessed to give than to receive”, and we testify that we have been blessed serving in Grace Notes. As our choir conductor, Ms Mary Tan led us through a varied repertoire during the year, we acquired greater competency in choral singing. We benefitted spiritually from being challenged to deliver some songs from memory as we internalized and meditated on those lyrics. We enjoyed singing in Italian, Mandarin and Hebrew, accompanied by piano, cello, flute and violin on different occasions.

We thank our Lord Jesus Christ for His presence in all (Above) Mary Tan in action; (Below) Choir Retreat 2015 our rehearsals, for His guiding and leading Grace Notes and most important of all, for being in the centre of everything we do. A member had this to say when she reflected on her year in Grace Notes: “How little faith I have! Constantly afraid of the unknown, but being in Grace Notes, I’m assured of the mighty power of our resurrected Christ! His transformation of the choir in two hours is testimony to His grace when our hearts are united to serve Him to the best of our ability.” House of Prayer page 28 uphill & beyond ISSUE 2, 2015

BRMC A member of the Gracce Notes Choir writes from the heart about his GRACE NOTES CHOIR journey in finding his place in the ministry of choral singing for the RETREAT 2015 - WORKING Lord. William Ang tells us the story of the Grace Notes Choir Retreat IN OUR MASTER’S CHORAL 2015 amidst his reflections on his deepening desire for the Lord VINEYARD TOGETHER despite not believing that he could sing or read music. We marvel at how the Lord works in each of us as we read William’s story of faith here in these pages.

BRMC Pastoral Team Member Philip 8.30 SANCTUARY CHOIR: Poh writes this report for THE CHRIST OF CHRISTMAS the 8.30am Sanctuary Choir. He ends his report with an invitation to join the “public- faced ministry” of the Choir.

Instead of the Carol service (“Candle & Carols”), we presented a collection of choral works through the regular Sunday Sanctuary services (starting 30 November 30 and ending on Christmas Day December 25). The choral works were extracts of different Cantatas: “BORN A KING”, “THE PROMISE OF LIGHT”, “THE WONDER OF CHRISTMAS” and “CHRIST IS BORN”.

The flow of the choral works spoke of HOPE – as the prophets of long ago reminded all of a prophesy of deliverance – of JOY – as the shepherds heard the angels sang of its fulfilment in Bethlehem and saw it for themselves – and of LOVE – as Mary wondered about her role in God’s Plan for humankind.

The climax of this selection was “The Christ of Christmas”, presented as the Anthem on Christmas Day.

Composed by Don Blackley (text) and Cindy Berry (music) and published in 2012, it exhorts us to look beyond the celebrations of the season, to see Jesus a baby yet a King.

“He is here and He is King!”

Presenting “JOY TO THE WORLD” on a different beat House of Prayer page 32 uphill & beyond ISSUE 2, 2015

But what differentiated this Cantata from other “traditional” works was the presentation of specially arranged Choral Responses on Christmas Sunday and Christmas Day. There was the CHRISTMAS KUM BA YA, a familiar spiritual, sung in Swahili. JOY TO THE WORLD was sung acapella with a swing. On Christmas Day, we presented MARY’S BOY CHILD in “rhythm and blues”. Some in the congregation later remarked that they did not know these songs could be presented in other refreshing ways!

We would like to thank Ms Angelina Choo, a professional voice instructor and an acapella performer in her own right, for coaching us with these Choral Responses.

The Choir was blessed by the presence of fresh faces: young people, whole families and children, joining us for the season.

Choir: a public-faced ministry

The Choir is not just for people aspiring to sing praises to God. It is also a “public-faced” ministry (in full public view to bless others).

Integrated with the worship service, the Choir directs the congregation’s focus and worship of God, and sharpens the flow of the pastoral theme and direction for the service. Through presentations of INTROIT, ANTHEM and CHORAL RESPONSE, the Choir invites the congregation to worship God, presents an insight for reflection, and as the congregation prepares to leave at the end of the service, encourages them with reminders of what they have to live with joy.

Recognizing this special role, we aspire with God’s Grace to engage the congregation with songs that are aligned to the weekly Reflective verse, Reflective Question and Prayer. We endeavour to improve our technical capabilities and share songs of different genres and rhythm.

We also seek to provide opportunities for families to participate – singing with us either at our “seasonal” Cantatas (Easter, Christmas) and special events (Candles & Carols), or during Holy Communion Sundays where there is no Sunday School for the children.
