It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore. Psalm 133 Heroes didn’t leap tall buildings or stop bullets with an outstretched hand; they didn’t wear boots and capes. They bled and they bruised, and their superpowers were as simple as listening, or loving. Heroes were ordinary people who knew that even if their own lives were impossibly knotted, they could untangle someone else’s. And maybe that one act could lead someone to rescue you right back. Jodi Picoult, Second Glance One of my favourite television shows in the 90’s was a sitcom called Cheers. The serial played around characters in a bar (which actually exists in Boston). What drew me to that series was the theme “where everyone knows your name, and they’re always glad you came”. Each episode featured characters facing personal crises, and finding comfort, friendship, and solace from other patrons at the bar. The comedic element was the idiosyncrasies and quirkiness of each character; few were likeable. Despite their ‘weirdness’, each person was embraced and welcomed at the bar. The sitcom struck a chord deep in me: I often struggled with a fear of rejection, and longed for companionships that would accept me as I am. I dreamed of a community where I did not need to be the super-achiever or the saint, but where despite my obvious and not-so-obvious blemishes, everyone “was glad that I came”. I dream this for Barker Road Methodist Church too. I dream of a church where everyone has a friend; I dream of a church where slights are quickly overlooked or forgiven; a church where every member wants to go to, not only because the preaching is superb or the worship anointed, but because they know that someone there is always glad that they came. Reading the Gospels, I know that God dreams of that too. BRMC Welcome, NEW Staff: DR KEVIN lowe Hello BRMC, I have just joined the church as Pastoral Team Member (PTM) for missions. My wife Claire and I have 3 children, Titus, Tabitha, and Faith. We have all spent quite a bit of time (15 years) on the mission field, primarily in Cambodia with another year in Myanmar. We have just returned to Singapore for over a year now. I served with the Trinity Annual Conference as an ordained elder, with The Methodist Missions Society as a missionary pastor, and until most recently as a tentmaker and utilizing business as missions. During those years, God granted me the privilege to complete my post-graduate studies in evangelism and also in missions. Missions have always been my (and my wife’s) passion and calling. BRMC has much to offer in the field of world missions and it is my hope that we can be the best possible stewards of all that God has entrusted to us. We look forward to serving in BRMC. ANNIKA THOR Foto Ulla Montán Nominated for the 2020 Hans Christian Andersens Award 1 Nomination Dear Jury Members and IBBY Secretariat We are delighted to nominate Author Annika Thor to the Hans Christian Andersen Award in the author category 2020. When the Board of IBBY Sweden decided to nominate the writer Annika Thor for the H C Andersen Award 2020, the principal argument was her strong advocacy for the human rights of children and young adults to be treated with dignity and respect. In her authorship, Thor centres on what it means to be human in relation to identity and belonging. The individual's struggle to find a place in existence is a motif, and the quests for love and community as well as loneliness are central concerns. Thor's texts draw attention to how migrants and refugee children are treated in their new context and social environments, in which identity and belonging are created in interaction with others. With gripping realism and insight into children's way of approaching reality, she depicts not least how refugees perceive themselves and are perceived by others as well as the experience of being viewed as an object or reduced to being part of a group without individuality. In the historical novel sequel about the Steiner girls, En ö i havet [A faraway island,] (1996), Näckrosdammen [The Lily Pond] (1997), Havets Djup [Deep Sea] (1998) and Öppet hav [Open Sea] (1999), Thor deals with themes that are as central today as during the pogroms in World War II. In an historical context she portrays how young people's identity, social and cultural belonging can develop.

First, these restrictions curtail religious liberty and impede religious truth-seeking. Second, these restrictions tend to favour politically dominant religions and dis- criminate against minority religions. The restrictions on offensive religious propa- gation in Singapore thus present an interesting departure in which sanctioned religions are not politically marginalised religions, whereas protected religions include numerical minority religions that are socially, economically, and politi- cally disadvantaged. This article utilises the atypical case study of Singapore to highlight the limitations of the two typical objections toward proselytisation restrictions. In particular, the emphasis on religious truth-seeking underpinning these objections is premised upon a distinct set of religious worldviews not shared by the majority of religions in Singapore. This article posits that if religious truth- seeking is no longer the accepted normative goal, then there may be circum- stances in which some limited and even-handed restrictions on offensive religious propagation are sufficiently justified on the grounds of social peace and harmony.

Piotr Mulawka Leksykon polskiej i światowej muzyki elektronicznej „Zrealizowano w ramach programu stypendialnego Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego-Kultura w sieci” Wydawca: Piotr Mulawka [email protected] © 2020 Wszelkie prawa zastrzeżone ISBN 978-83-943331-4-0 2 Przedmowa Muzyka elektroniczna narodziła się w latach 50-tych XX wieku, a do jej powstania przyczyniły się zdobycze techniki z końca XIX wieku m.in. telefon- pierwsze urządzenie służące do przesyłania dźwięków na odległość (Aleksander Graham Bell), fonograf- pierwsze urządzenie zapisujące dźwięk (Thomas Alv Edison 1877), gramofon (Emile Berliner 1887). Jak podają źródła, w 1948 roku francuski badacz, kompozytor, akustyk Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995) nagrał za pomocą mikrofonu dźwięki naturalne m.in. (śpiew ptaków, hałas uliczny, rozmowy) i próbował je przekształcać. Tak powstała muzyka nazwana konkretną (fr. musigue concrete). W tym samym roku wyemitował w radiu „Koncert szumów”. Jego najważniejszą kompozycją okazał się utwór pt. „Symphonie pour un homme seul” z 1950 roku. W kolejnych latach muzykę konkretną łączono z muzyką tradycyjną. Oto pionierzy tego eksperymentu: John Cage i Yannis Xenakis. Muzyka konkretna pojawiła się w kompozycji Rogera Watersa. Utwór ten trafił na ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu „The Body” (1970). Grupa Beaver and Krause wprowadziła muzykę konkretną do utworu „Walking Green Algae Blues” z albumu „In A Wild Sanctuary” (1970), a zespół Pink Floyd w „Animals” (1977). Pierwsze próby tworzenia muzyki elektronicznej miały miejsce w Darmstadt (w Niemczech) na Międzynarodowych Kursach Nowej Muzyki w 1950 roku. W 1951 roku powstało pierwsze studio muzyki elektronicznej przy Rozgłośni Radia Zachodnioniemieckiego w Kolonii (NWDR- Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk). Tu tworzyli: H. Eimert (Glockenspiel 1953), K. • Religious Studies and Transcultural Studies
180 Religious Studies and Transcultural Studies Religious Studies and Transcultural Studies: Revealing a Cosmos Not Known Before? Esther Berg, Institut für Weltkirche und Mission, Frankfurt Katja Rakow, Universiteit Utrecht Introduction The notion of the “transcultural,” together with all its possible derivatives, has without doubt become one of the buzzwords of the humanities and social sciences in recent years. In this paper, we set out to explore the relationship between an emerging transcultural paradigm and the academic study of religion by discussing what a transcultural perspective, as we understand it, can bring to the table for those of us studying religions.1 In doing so, we seek to promote awareness of and critical engagement with such a perspective among our colleagues within and beyond the study of religion, addressing both proponents of the discussion as well as outsiders. In our own research, the notion of the transcultural and its theoretical implications have enabled us to articulate aspects of our research material that we had not seen or had no satisfactory concepts to describe. In this paper, we thus want to share the fruitfulness of a transcultural research perspective. Yet, as we have discovered and appropriated the notion of the transcultural for ourselves and our own research, it has also opened our eyes to what Daniel G. König and Katja Rakow have called the “transcultural component” of our own academic discipline.2 Not only might the academic study of religion itself be described as the product of various “trans-cultural” encounters, but the methodological and theoretical concerns informing our understanding of a transcultural research perspective can also be found in one form or another in already well- established discussions and approaches within and beyond our own discipline.
