First, these restrictions curtail religious liberty and impede religious truth-seeking. Second, these restrictions tend to favour politically dominant religions and dis- criminate against minority religions. The restrictions on offensive religious propa- gation in Singapore thus present an interesting departure in which sanctioned religions are not politically marginalised religions, whereas protected religions include numerical minority religions that are socially, economically, and politi- cally disadvantaged. This article utilises the atypical case study of Singapore to highlight the limitations of the two typical objections toward proselytisation restrictions. In particular, the emphasis on religious truth-seeking underpinning these objections is premised upon a distinct set of religious worldviews not shared by the majority of religions in Singapore. This article posits that if religious truth- seeking is no longer the accepted normative goal, then there may be circum- stances in which some limited and even-handed restrictions on offensive religious propagation are sufficiently justified on the grounds of social peace and harmony.

    Summary of Sexual Abuse Claims in Chapter 11 Cases of Boy Scouts of America There are approximately 101,135sexual abuse claims filed. Of those claims, the Tort Claimants’ Committee estimates that there are approximately 83,807 unique claims if the amended and superseded and multiple claims filed on account of the same survivor are removed. The summary of sexual abuse claims below uses the set of 83,807 of claim for purposes of claims summary below.1 The Tort Claimants’ Committee has broken down the sexual abuse claims in various categories for the purpose of disclosing where and when the sexual abuse claims arose and the identity of certain of the parties that are implicated in the alleged sexual abuse. Attached hereto as Exhibit 1 is a chart that shows the sexual abuse claims broken down by the year in which they first arose. Please note that there approximately 10,500 claims did not provide a date for when the sexual abuse occurred. As a result, those claims have not been assigned a year in which the abuse first arose. Attached hereto as Exhibit 2 is a chart that shows the claims broken down by the state or jurisdiction in which they arose. Please note there are approximately 7,186 claims that did not provide a location of abuse. Those claims are reflected by YY or ZZ in the codes used to identify the applicable state or jurisdiction. Those claims have not been assigned a state or other jurisdiction. Attached hereto as Exhibit 3 is a chart that shows the claims broken down by the Local Council implicated in the sexual abuse.

    180 Religious Studies and Transcultural Studies Religious Studies and Transcultural Studies: Revealing a Cosmos Not Known Before? Esther Berg, Institut für Weltkirche und Mission, Frankfurt Katja Rakow, Universiteit Utrecht Introduction The notion of the “transcultural,” together with all its possible derivatives, has without doubt become one of the buzzwords of the humanities and social sciences in recent years. In this paper, we set out to explore the relationship between an emerging transcultural paradigm and the academic study of religion by discussing what a transcultural perspective, as we understand it, can bring to the table for those of us studying religions.1 In doing so, we seek to promote awareness of and critical engagement with such a perspective among our colleagues within and beyond the study of religion, addressing both proponents of the discussion as well as outsiders. In our own research, the notion of the transcultural and its theoretical implications have enabled us to articulate aspects of our research material that we had not seen or had no satisfactory concepts to describe. In this paper, we thus want to share the fruitfulness of a transcultural research perspective. Yet, as we have discovered and appropriated the notion of the transcultural for ourselves and our own research, it has also opened our eyes to what Daniel G. König and Katja Rakow have called the “transcultural component” of our own academic discipline.2 Not only might the academic study of religion itself be described as the product of various “trans-cultural” encounters, but the methodological and theoretical concerns informing our understanding of a transcultural research perspective can also be found in one form or another in already well- established discussions and approaches within and beyond our own discipline.

Westbrook Drew University Madison, New Jersey May 2014 ABSTRACT The International Christian Embassy, Jerusalem And Renewalist Zionism: Emerging Jewish-Christian Ethnonationalism Ph.D. Dissertation by Matthew C. Westbrook The Graduate Division of Religion Drew University May 2014 This study names and examines the Renewalist (Pentecostal-charismatic-neo- charismatic) strain of Christian Zionism using the International Christian Embassy, Jerusalem, as a primary lens into this global movement. The major finding in this dissertation is the contemporary emergence of a Jewish-Christian ethnonationalism, suggesting changes to the way nationalism is manifest in a global age, changes to certain segments of Christianity, and the emergence of a distinctive global political and religious culture centered around the existence of the state of Israel. Scholars of Christian Zionism have long associated the Christian Zionism with the 19th century, largely American theological movement known as premillennial dispensationalism. This association is erroneous in that it does not recognize earlier and different sources of Christian Zionism, nor does it recognize alternate, contemporary forms of the movement. Such undifferentiating associations have consequences for scholarly approaches to understandings related to the socio-political activities of Christian Zionism globally, the history of Christian Zionism, millennialist Christianity, and the Christian appropriation of the state of Israel and Jewish religion, culture, and even persons. Using the ICEJ as a primary example of Renewalist Zionism, this dissertation examines the ways this Christian Zionism manifests in other historical and contemporaneous forms of Renewalist Christianity.
