2-3. Target Group - Village women (vulnerable, woman head of the family, poor, and disadvantaged) - Children in the community - Angkor Ban indigo community group in Kompong Cham

2-4. Background CYK has been conducted a variety of weaving training courses for beginners and village weavers at the weaving training center in the Community learning center in Bati district, Takeo province since 2003. According to the weavers’ needs, the training contents, curriculum, teaching methodology are reviewed every year. To improve the quality of weavers' products CYK dispatched the Japanese expert of natural dye in 2010 to train local staff the standard way of natural dying. The way of dying with natural colors were trained and practiced at the weaving training center. In 2012, to review basic knowledge and practice of Indigo natural dye to village women in Kampong Cham, as well as CYK’s trainers and staff, CYK invited the expert of indigo paste making and indigo dying for the training for them. The Japanese expert trained them the standard way of indigo paste making and dying of natural color of Indigo. And the workshop and follow up was continuously conducted every year by CYK staff to improve their skills. To improve the skills of Ikat weaving in order to produce qualified products to get more income, CYK created three-month training course and continued on-the job-training on Khmer traditional ikat weaving and new color combination of natural dye from 2012. Pidan, pictorial ikat silk, is a very special elaborately designed pictorial silk textile. In Takeo province, some old ladies used to weave pidan and they used to donate pidan to the temple in the community. Although pidan weavers are getting old and there are few skillful weavers who

8 mastered tie dyed techniques of complicated motifs of ikat silk. It requires weavers to be skilled and to spend a huge amount of time and efforts. Therefore, the conservation of weaving technique of ikat silk “pidan” is an urgent matter. Fortunately CYK’s trainer is special motivated to transmit these skills of pidan weaving to young weavers. So, the pidan weaving skill training was conducted for three month every year since 2012. In 2013, to develop new skill, twelve weavers engaged in weaving Obi cloth in TK center though at the end of May. Obi cloth is used for Japanese Kimono. Khmer traditional pattern is depicted into the cloth. The weavers, who like weaving work, would like to have the regular order for both their economic situation and improving skills of making Obi. This training course was also continued in the following year. According to the suggestion from APHEDA organization, CYK organized a training course on starting ikat pattern for their trainers. Those trainers have no background of Ikat tie- dye technique yet, so APHEDA send them to acquire this skill from CYK. The training course is from May- July 2014. Recently the weaving situation in the villages is very difficult as the price of silk yarn has been increased a lot and the silk ikat textile of sampot hol has not been sold well. Therefore there are many weavers stopped recently to work at the garment factories. In Trapeang Krasaing learning center, a library has been operated under the sponsorship of Caring for Young Khmer organization since 2010. Library has played very important role to provide additional knowledge to our children through reading, playing games and drawing favorite picture. Based on these activities, they can upgrade their learning ability to be good human resource of our society in the future. Children are our hope.

2-5. Program 2-5-1. Khmer Ikat Weaving Skill Training Course In May 2014, according to the request from APHEDA organization, CYK provided a training course on starting ikat pattern for their three trainers from Kompot, Preah Vihea and province. Those trainers have no background of Ikat tie- dye technique yet, so APHEDA send them to acquire this skill from CYK. The training course is from May- July 2014. The content of this training is dyeing warp, choosing takor, learnt how to make weft with cotton yarn as sample, tying pattern, dyeing into the silk yarn to make real ikat cloth and weaving. Among 179 graduates from ikat weaving training course, ten graduates continued to weave ikat cloth through on-the job-training for CYK in 2015. In August 2016, another Ikat weaving training was started for five village women in Samraong district, Takeo province. Each trainee could complete five patterns with new color designs including indigo color during this three months course.

9 2-5-2. Traditional Pictorial Silk Ikat, Pidan Weaving Skill Training Course The traditional pictorial silk ikat, Pidan, weaving skill training course was held for three months every year from 2014 to 2016. Four advance weavers attended in each course. All of them were dynamic learning how to make Pidan. At the end of each course, the evaluation was conducted on their weaving skill, dyeing skill and theory understanding. As result, they could get score over 90% in both of theory and practice. During training, each trainee could weave 1 Kben, 4 meters, and earned their weaving fee from their training pattern around 500 dollars within three months.

Under the support of the Embassy of Japan to Cambodia, CYK cooperated with the National Museum of Cambodia to exhibit hol pidan, “Cambodian Traditional Pictorial Silk Textile; Preservation and Development” at the national museum for three months, from January 11, 2016 to April 11, 2016. This exhibition aims to introduce Pidan, the tradional Khmer weaving, as well as to promote more widely the Cambodian textile tradition including the preservation of tie-dye and weaving technique of silk ikat pidan. Among the exhibited eleven (11) pieces of pidans, four (4) pieces are dyed with indigo. The opening ceremony of the exhibition was held on 11th January 2016 presided over by H.E. Mrs. Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Ministry of Cultural and Fine Arts, H.E. Mr. Yuji KUMAMARU, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, Mr. Kong Vireak, Director of the Museum Department, many distinguish guests and pidan trainer and trainees.

2-5-3. Obi training course In 2014, the obi cloth training course was continued with seven skillful Ikat weavers and the quality and technique of making Obi cloth was improved in 2015. The duration for the course was three months every year in 2014 and 2015. The complicated patterns and complicated dyeing technique were taught to the obi weavers. It is very special for dyeing ikat pattern to keep the light color background. It is taken time and spent a lot of labor to complete one Obi cloth. This skill need to be taught carefully because it is more difficult than the normal ikat cloth because it is smaller size and tying ikat pattern without ikat line, so all students need to be more patient and good mood in the process of making. During three month training in 2015, the students could practice to make 16 of Obi cloth with natural dye color included indigo blue color.

2-5-4. Indigo Paste Making and Dying Workshops The group of women in Kompong Cham, where CYK had invited the experts from Japan to train the skills of indigo paste making and indigo dyeing in 2012, are very interested to acquire and learn more the skills of indigo paste making and dyeing. They have been benefit to generate income from these indigo pastes making and dyeing. CYK invited the expert of indigo paste making and indigo dying for the evaluation and further development of the skills in 2014 and 2016. The skills will be trained for CYK’s staff at the weaving training center in Takeo province as well.

10 In 2016, to help the group to be self-reliance and continue their work on the indigo paste making and dyeing, CYK accepted their requests and conduct scarf weaving skill training for them for 40 days. Three pattern of scarf was taught during the training for six village women. All the scarves were dyed with indigo paste they made.

2-6. Achievements during three years of project implementation, 2014-2016 - On-the-job training had helped 30 participants to improve the quality of their weaving products. Their different kinds of samples were shown for discussion. The graduates learned how to avoid the mistakes and improve the quality of their weaving products. - Three trainers of APHEDA from Kompot, Preah Vihea and could acquire the knowledge on starting ikat pattern and ikat tie-dye technique. And they could continue to train these techniques to their trainee in their places. - Among 179 graduates from ikat weaving training course, ten graduates continued to weave ikat cloth through on-the job-training and other five attended the ikat training course by using new color designs including indigo color. - Total seven advance weavers attended the training on “The traditional pictorial silk ikat, Pidan” from 2014 to 2016. Each trainee could weave 1 Kben, 4 meters, and earned their weaving fee from their training pattern around 500 dollars within three months training every year. - Seven skillful ikat weavers improved the quality and technique of making Obi cloth, especially Obi with complicated patterns and complicated dyeing technique. - Seven villagers in Kompong Cham province and CYK’s trainers and staff could improve their knowledge and practice of indigo paste making skills and indigo dying skills through the workshop every year. - Six village women in Kompong Cham province could acquire the skill of scarf weaving and could generate additional income from the scarf production. - Natural dye trial workshop attracted visitors to promote the natural dye both in TK center and in Phnom Penh. - The activities of the community library have been continued two days a week in the Community Learning Center and 180 to 200 children per month regularly participated it.
