Le but précis est de démontrer la nature de celui-ci. Pour ce faire, deux corpus seront considérés : en premier, l’histoire européenne et surtout française de la première moitié du XXe siècle, et en second, une œuvre littéraire. Le choix littéraire s’est arrêté sur l’œuvre de Pierre Drieu La Rochelle, auteur qui me semble incarner l’essence du fascisme, soit un fascisme spirituel, et qui me permet d’affirmer qu’il y eut ainsi un versant français au fascisme. Après des considérations générales sur le fascisme, mon mémoire plongera dans l’étude de l’œuvre de Drieu La Rochelle en tentant de distinguer sa pensée et ses actes politiques de son œuvre littéraire. Cette distinction ne servira qu’à montrer les différentes composantes qui, une fois articulées, dévoilent une des plumes les plus tragiques et les plus lucides de l’entre-deux guerres, et qui composent un esprit fasciste. iv Abstract This thesis presents a reflection on fascism. The aim is to demonstrate its nature. To do so, two bodies of research will be considered: first, European and French history, and second, a literary work. The literary choice stopped on the work of Pierre Drieu La Rochelle, an author who seems to embody the essence of fascism, a spiritual fascism, and who allows me to say that there was a French fascism. After general considerations on fascism, my thesis will focus on the work of Drieu La Rochelle, trying to separate his thinking and political acts of his literary work. Toward an Analysis of Fascist Fiction: The Contemptuous Narrator in the Works of Brasillach, Céline and Drieu la Rochelle Abstract Attempts to analyze the nature of French fascist literature have often foundered on the difficulties of defining fascism as a political ideology and on the apparent heterogeneity of the writers themselves. This paper seeks to discern the traces of political ideology in the fiction of Brasillach, Celine and Drieu la Rochelle, the three principal French fascist novelists of the 1930s, through an examination of the literary techniques used in the works themselves. In this reading, the feature common to the texts is not the expression of a collective enthusiasm often identified with fascism but atherr the repeated use of a distanced, even contemptuous, narrative voice.

Peter Davies is Senior Lecturer in Modern European History at the University of Huddersfield and author of two other books on twentieth-century French history.[1] The Extreme Right in France is, in his own words, "not primarily about people or events, but ideas" (p. 4). Convinced that "for good or for bad the far right has been a major player in French history," Davies seeks to approach the topic in a "non-polemical fashion" (p. 144). He wants neither to "denigrate or undermine" the extreme right nor to be "overjudgemental or pejorative" but to explain it in "neutral and objective" terms (p. 4). The book consists of an introduction, a historiographical essay, five thematic chapters that span the period between the French Revolution and Le Pen, and a final evaluation. Most of the introduction reads as a personal account of the author's "eye-opening" trip across France that led him to the "discovery" of the Le Pen phenomenon where he least expected it (p. 6). Chapter one condenses some of the historiographical debates and attempts, not entirely successfully, to offer a working definition of the extreme right.

L’engagement des artistes dans la politique, a-t-il une signification différente de celui des citoyens normaux ? Au vingtième siècle, les intel- lectuels français se mêlent notamment à la politique de leur pays. Les deux guerres mondiales ainsi que la montée du fascisme et du communisme font que les idées répandues dans la presse prennent une nouvelle importance. Puisque les intellectuels méritent leur célébrité selon la quali- té de leur expression et l’analyse des idées, le public leur confère une autorité symbolique, celle de commenter les événements pour montrer la voie juste. Ils interpellent la population à travers le journalisme, qui permet aux écrivains de commenter les actualités et de diffuser leurs idées à un grand public.
