Saamis Prairie View Cemetery, Medicine Hat, Alberta. (Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens) This cemetery is located on the north side of Highway #3 four kilometers west of the entrance to the Medicine Hat airport. Legal land description is NW 04-12-06-W4. This property formerly known as Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens was developed in about 1955, the first burials were in 1956. The number of interments at this location dropped drastically in the early 1990's due to high costs and lack of maintenance. Since Saamis Funeral Home purchased this cemetery from the provincial government in early 1996 its usage has increased dramatically. Improved maintenance has returned this site to its former attractive appearance. As at August 29, 1996, there were just over 800 burials with about 625 of those marked with the approved flat grave marker. Much of the data below was gathered during a site visit September 18, 1999. Many of the original flat type grave markers are being replaced with upright stone markers. Burials number just over 1100.
