SCL Editor’s Letter

Dear SHAPIANS,

The avant-garde of latest scientific discoveries is often based on ancient pillars of knowledge. The same rule applies to fashion, design, appliances, etc. This kind of revival, a development of what in fashion is sometimes called “vintage style”, frequently provides a modern fresh look to past ideas. There are hardly any real new inventions nowadays that translate into registered patents. Why is that? In my humble opinion, one of the reasons is the lack of room for creativity. When all is given and there is no need to think, to research, to make any effort in order to get what we want, at the end, our capacity to explore new ways becomes limited.

When spring starts and nature begins its blooming phase, why not start trying to imitate a similar explosive attitude for discovery and desire to succeed in ourselves? Of course, we are not plants, trees, or any type of vegetable. But do not forget that we were created as nature was. We have a survival instinct that could focus more on discoveries. So take advantage of the season and get out to explore real life. Maybe you will become the Da Vinci of the century!

n 12th February The SHAPE Club was the venue for the most eagerly awaited event this year, namely The Turkish Henna Night. It was a splendid social and cultural event which lived up to all expectations. The ladies were greeted by a feast of Turkish culture, festooned in many shades of red, a colour synonymous with the Turkish nation. This imaginative presentation in the foyer created a unique, convivial atmosphere which permeated through the entire evening. While the guests mingled and enjoyed the drinks’ reception, they were entertained by a Turkish violinist, who performed a varied selection of Turkish and classical pieces. There was a very impressive model of the iconic bridge known officially as the th15 July Martyrs Bridge, a very appropriate example of famous Turkish landmarks. The Turkish ladies dressed in their colourful national costumes, distributed handmade gifts and encouraged the guests to hang their wishes on ‘The Wish Tree’. It was exquisitely decorated and had a magical nuance, which attracted many ladies to pose for photographs; mementos of this outstanding night. ‘The Henna Throne’ was also another area of great interest. This regal setting was also very attractive as a fitting backdrop for photographs of the ladies in their vivid red ensembles. More surprises were in store as the ladies entered the ballroom. The Turkish ladies welcomed all the guests as they proceeded to the beautifully decorated tables. Each lady received a distinctly Turkish pendant as a gift. The genuine hospitality of all the Turkish hostesses greatly added to the enjoyment of the event. Sofia Ziakri, President of SIWC, cordially welcomed all the ladies and extended a special welcome to the Honorary President Mrs Cindy Scaparrotti, Honorary Vice President Lady Caroline Everard, and Honorary member Mrs Annette Kneip. In her welcome speech, The Turkish NMR Lady Mrs Tuğba Öztürk thanked all the Turkish ladies for all their assistance in the preparation of this event and wished everyone a very pleasant evening.

7 SCL The ladies proceeded to enjoy a sumptuous meal, traditional Turkish fare and beautifully presented. The SHAPE Club and its staff should be complimented for their preparation of the delicious Turkish dishes and efficient service. There was a superb array of tombola prizes, very representative of Turkish art and crafts. Unquestionably, the most sought-after prizes were two fabulous holidays to Antalya and Marmaris. As one of the lucky winners of one of the holidays, I look forward to this Turkish experience after gaining such a unique insight into the rich culture of Turkey. When the raffle had concluded, the focus of the night was unveiled, as the traditional Henna Ceremony was enacted to the delight of all those in attendance. The bride, wearing a very ornate costume performed the traditional dance surrounded by her bridesmaids and was later joined by the groom. The Turkish ladies supported this colourful spectacle with a drum and percussion accompaniment while the Turkish NMR Lady Mrs Tuğba Öztürk had the privilege of applying the henna to the bride’s palm. The guests were all encouraged to join in the festivities and this interactive aspect of the evening contributed to the ultimate success of this social event.

When we went to deliver the food collected from the December Vaquita, the idea to organize a special day for the children at the SHAPE Pizza Bowl emerged and everyone agreed it was a good idea. One of the Vaquita volunteers, said when asked how this idea came about: “My son had such a good time at the St. Nicholas party that we decided to bring the children back together again!” The generosity of the Spanish´s community was overwhelming because thanks to an anonymous donation, the pizza and games were completely paid for! And, from the Vaquita monies collected, the IC3 was able to buy new bed linen for them too. This was a wonderful surprise for all involved. These kinds of things are possible because we live in a giving community. Everyone comes from different countries, who are each involved in their own way in the act of giving and sharing, with all the other communities, especially with the ones who look after children in need.
