He is a valuable contributor not only to the Holocaust Literature genre, but also to film and literature in general. His two English-translated works, Mr. Theodore Mundstock and The Cremator, as well as the film adaptation of The Cremator, examine the role imagination can play in art that addresses atrocity, allowing for a heightened subjective impact on the audience. I critically and comparatively examine Fuks' work to establish his value to literature and Holocaust art. In the first chapter, I frame my argument with questions of art's abilities to represent atrocity and provide relevant background information relating to Fuks' and his experience in wartime Prague. In Chapter Two, I closely read Mr. Theodore Mundstock, concentrating specifically on Fuks' use of metaphor, presentation of incredulity, and commentary on the imagination's capabilities in confronting terror. Chapter Three compares Mr. Theodore Mundstock to the “Momik” section of David Grossman's See Under: Love, focusing on similarities between the title characters. Chapter Four examines Fuks' use of the grotesque in The Cremator and its film adaptation.

    Anders Åslund Ukraine: What Went Wrong and How to Fix It Anders Åslund BESET BY RUSSIAN MILITARY AGGRESSION and the legacy from its years of economic mismanagement, Ukraine faces an existential crisis that has also roiled the politics of Europe. Yet there is a glimmer of hope and opportunity for this tormented country. In 2014 Ukraine carried out free and fair elections of a new president and parliament. With this democratic foundation, Ukraine can shape its future and return to economic and political stability. In this book, one of the world’s leading experts on Ukraine offers its new leadership a strategy for reform. Anders Åslund maintains that the country’s fundamental problem is corruption and poor governance, which requires radical reform of the state from the top down. He calls for the cleansing of the judiciary and law enforcement, including the abolition of the many intrusive inspection agencies, which use a regime of licenses, permits, and certifications to squeeze the lifeblood of the economy. The book also advocates cuts in wasteful public expenditures and deregulation to promote growth—but it also calls for international financing spearheaded by the International Monetary Fund. The European UKRAINE Union and the United States must also help. The book focuses extensively on the energy sector, which Åslund argues is the biggest source of top-level corruption and wasteful subsidies and should be reformed with a unified system of energy prices determined by the market, not government. Åslund also details a series of reforms in education and health care. To assure Ukraine’s success, the European Union must assume the role of anchor of the country’s democratic and market economic reforms.

The collaboration of the judicial system and lawyers with the Nazi regime has meanwhile been well documented in academic studies. Previously, however, it had been an open secret that many lawyers who were guilty of crimes returned to Heiko Maas West German government service after Federal Minister of Justice the foundation of the Federal Republic of and Consumer Protection Germany in 1949. The Independent Academic Commission set up to investigate how the Federal Ministry of Justice dealt with its Nazi past, the “Rosenburg Project”, undertook an intensive study of the continuity in terms of personnel and its consequences. Our Ministry allowed researchers full access to all the files for the first time. I would like to express my great thanks to the two Heads of Commission, Professor Manfred Görtemaker and Professor Christoph Safferling, and to their entire team for their committed work. The results are depressing. Of the 170 lawyers who held senior positions in the Ministry between 1949 and 1973, 90 had been members of the Nazi Party and 34 had been members of the SA. More than 15 percent had even worked in the Nazi Reich Ministry of Justice before 1945. These figures highlight why the prosecution of Nazi crimes was impeded for so long, the suffering of the victims was ignored far too long and many groups of victims – such as homosexuals or Sinti and Roma – suffered renewed discrimination in the Federal Republic of Germany.

    welcome here are few cities in the United States where members of the OAH prefer to meet more than the City by the Bay. San Francisco as a conference Tcity or as a tourist destination is hard to beat—it has something for every visitor. Our 2013 program, likewise, has something for every OAH conferee. The program committee, so ably cochaired by Tom Guglielmo and Erika Lee, assembled sessions, panels, workshops, and plenaries that link to nearly every subfield of American history. A large number link directly to the conference theme of “Entangled Histories,” which explores the complexities, intersections, and tensions that characterize so much of US history. Although we cannot promise ideal California weather in April, we can promise an engaging and rich intellectual experience. Plenary sessions, featuring an outstanding cast of colleagues, will consider two different topics. The first, titled “Freedom Struggles”—in commemoration of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln 150 years ago—will address benchmark Linda A. Cicero / Stanford News Service developments in the long history of Americans’ pursuit of equality. A second plenary will focus on the topic of “corporations in American life,” a subject of enormous importance to the history of industrial capitalism in the United States. It is a topic with a contemporary resonance that matches its historical significance. Both plenary sessions reflect “entangled histories,” the first about race, in knowledge about the area; a bus tour of the Mission ideologies of difference, and power, and the other about District’s world-famous murals; or a must-see tour of the wealth, class, and power.
