51 USA Women’s Coaching Staff

Guy Baker HEAD COACH In nearly a decade, Guy Baker has turned the national program into the most overall decorated women’s water polo program in the world. Since the 2000 Olympic Games, under Baker’s guidance whether as a Head Coach and/or Director USA Women’s Water Polo has won nine FINA major championship medals, 2 Olympic Games, 3 World Championships, 3 Junior World Championships, and 1 World Cup. The results are unprecedented; nine medals in 12 events with 12 consecutive medal round appearances and 8 gold medal game finals. The closest international opponent has won six medals during this time period and has appeared in five gold medal game finals. His coaching highlights would be two World Championship gold medals (2003 and 2007), Silver Medal at the 2000 Olympic Games, Bronze Medal at the 2004 Olympic Games, two Pan American Games Gold Medals (2003 and 2007) and three World League Super Final titles (2004, 2006 and 2007). Baker began his coaching career in 1985 as an assistant to Ken Lindgren at Long Beach State University, where he was a former star player. After six years with the 49ers, Baker moved on to UCLA, where he was named men’s head coach in 1991. In his first year, Baker coached the men’s team to a second-place NCAA finish and was named the American Water Polo Coaches Association Coach of the Year. UCLA added women’s water polo in 1995, prompting Baker to tackle head coach double duty from 1995-1998. In that time, the UCLA women’s team notched three collegiate titles in 1996, 1997, and 1998; the men’s team won four NCAA titles in 1995, 1996, 1999, and 2000. Baker was the first coach in history to lead both a men’s and women’s collegiate team to NCAA titles in the same year (1995-96). He went on to duplicate the double win the following year. Baker lives in Long Beach, CA, with his wife, Michelle, and his two daughters, Samantha and Christen.

FOULS There are three types of fouls in water polo. Ordinary fouls account for approximately 80% of the whistles during the game and personal fouls (exclusion and penalty fouls) the remainder. Ordinary fouls include: touching the ball with two hands; taking the ball under water when tackled; impeding an opponent in possession of the ball who is not holding the ball; pushing off of an opponent; and, stalling Impeding an opponent in possession of the ball who is not (failing to advance the ball into a better scoring holding the ball and pushing off of an opponent are just a opportunity).
