  • Never Heard of It… the Reasons Behind the Poor Knowledge of German Youth on Concentration Camps Author: JOANNA LUBECKA 03.03.2021
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (source: Wikimedia Commons_Jonay CP_CC BY 2.0) ARTYKUŁ Auschwitz? Never heard of it… The reasons behind the poor knowledge of German youth on concentration camps Author: JOANNA LUBECKA 03.03.2021 To this day, the Germans and Austrians are not certain how to deal with the grim legacy of concentration camps. The trivialisation of memory adds to the lack of knowledge about the camps among the younger generations. Winston Churchill once said: “History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it”. States and nations fight for the chance to enforce the “monopoly on interpretation” on the world, ergo for “history to be kind to them”. For this reason, they attempt to popularise their own version of memory and historical narrative. Of course, this is largely due to the historical policies and expectations of societies to paint their countries in the best possible light at the international scene. The Polish, German and Austrian experiences of the Second World War are so drastically different that to find a unified interpretation of some events seems almost impossible, while the clash of some historical narratives is sometimes painful. However, we could assume that the concentration and death camps in the Third Reich and in the territories it occupied should never be an element of political games and manipulations. Independently of their location, they should remain as proof of the crime and, at the same time, a kind of memento for humanity. It is worth taking a closer look at how the “policy” of commemorating these places is carried out and, first and foremost, what is the general knowledge and memory of the younger generations on concentration camps.

The representative of the German occupation authorities, SS-Sturmbannführer Bruno Müller, commanded Jagiellonian University Rector, Professor Tadeusz Lehr-Spławiński to convene a meeting of all the university’s lecturers at the administrative center building in the Collegium Novum. The meeting of 6 November 1939 turned out to be a trap – after a few- minute speech by Müller, in which he stated that the university had always been the “source of anti-German attitudes”, the professors were arrested. In total, 183 people were detained – mainly scholars associated with the Jagiellonian University, the University of Mining and the Cracow Academy of Commerce, as well as several other people who were then in the building or its surroundings at the time. The arrested were transported to the police prison on Montelupich Street, and then to the barracks on Mazowiecka Street. Several days later, 172 of them (a few people had been released in the meantime) were taken to Wrocław, from where they were transferred to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp located on the outskirts of Oranienburg. The eradication of the Polish intellectual elite The police action of imprisoning the Cracow professors was part of a broader plan to eradicate Polish elites. The "Intelligenzaktion" operation, which lasted from the moment the Germans entered Poland in the autumn of 1939, was carried out mainly in the territories incorporated into the Reich.

Geografia polska w latach II wojny światowej Instytut Geografii i Gospodarki Przestrzennej Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego Kraków, 2010, s. 17–21 Karol Musioł (Rector), Antoni Jackowski Geography and geographers during World War II October of 1939, for the first time in close to six hundred years, the Jagiellonian University did not inaugurate a new academic year. In The city of Kraków and Poland as a whole had come under Nazi control. Several weeks later, University Rector Tadeusz Lehr-Spławiński called all University professors for a special meeting. A German officer was to present a lecture on the Third Reich’s view of science and universities. The lecture turned out to be a trap. Following an arrogant and anti-Polish speech by SS-Sturmbannfüh rer Brunon Müller, over 180 Polish researchers were arrested and put in trucks to be taken away. This was the beginning of their wartime Gehenna. Many would come to pay the ultimate price. On November 28th, the prisoners were taken to the Sachsenhausen-Oranienburg concentration camp near Berlin. Some of them would later be sent to the Dachau camp near Munich as well as other concentration camps. November 6th had become a symbolic date. It quickly became apparent that this was only the first step in the Nazi campaign against the Polish educated classes. November 6th, 1939 was the most tragic day in the history of Polish geography, and even more specifically, geography at the Jagiellonian University. A number of geographers were among the professors arrested on
