Lane College Dragons 2011 Football Season Outlook Derrick Burroughs starts his second season as the Head Football Coach for the Dragons with expectations of an exciting year ahead. After a disappointing 2010 football season, Coach Burroughs is ap- proaching his second season with a revamped and reloaded squad.

The Dragons will return five starters from last year on the offensive side of the ball. The revamped offense is making the switch from the triple option to a spread offense style of play. This new offensive scheme is de- signed for a ball control approach to the game. Coach Burroughs stated that his goals with this revamped of- fense are to “reduce costly turn-overs, and help become a more efficient red zone offense. The overall goal is to put more points on the board.”

Defensively, the Dragons will return five starters from the 2010 team that finished 6th in the SIAC in total de- fense. The defense will continue to follow the 3/4 scheme from last year, aimed at significantly reducing the number of points given up. The defense will play a pivotal role in the overall game plan under Coach Burroughs. Burroughs further states: “our goals are to be more efficient on 3rd down, and focus on stopping the run.”

The 2011 Dragons season opens with a road trip to Jacksonville, FL for the opening game match up with Ed- ward Waters College on September 3. The road trip continues the following week as the Dragons travel to At- lanta, GA to take on conference opponent Clark-Atlanta Panthers on September10. September 17 has the Dragons hosting Point University in the non-conference home opener. The Maroon Tigers of Morehouse Col- lege travel to Lane Field for a conference visit on September 24 for the second home game for the Dragons. The Dragons have home field advantage for three of the five games scheduled in October. On October1, the Dragons will travel to Tuscaloosa, AL for a conference showdown with the Tigers. The Golden Rams from Albany State University will make their appearance at Lane Field on October 8 for the fourth conference game of the season. Homecoming 2011 is scheduled for October 15 as the Dragons will host Tuskegee University. The Dragons take to the highway for the October 22 match up with conference foe Miles College Golden Bears in Birmingham, AL. The last home game of the season features the Dragons host- ing the Thoroughbred’s of Kentucky State University on October 29. To complete the regular season schedule, the Dragons will travel to Columbia, SC to play the Tigers from Benedict College on November 5.
