After a disappointing 2010 football season, Coach Burroughs is ap- proaching his second season with a revamped and reloaded squad. The Dragons will return five starters from last year on the offensive side of the ball. The revamped offense is making the switch from the triple option to a spread offense style of play. This new offensive scheme is de- signed for a ball control approach to the game. Coach Burroughs stated that his goals with this revamped of- fense are to “reduce costly turn-overs, and help become a more efficient red zone offense. The overall goal is to put more points on the board.” Defensively, the Dragons will return five starters from the 2010 team that finished 6th in the SIAC in total de- fense. The defense will continue to follow the 3/4 scheme from last year, aimed at significantly reducing the number of points given up. The defense will play a pivotal role in the overall game plan under Coach Burroughs. Burroughs further states: “our goals are to be more efficient on 3rd down, and focus on stopping the run.” The 2011 Dragons season opens with a road trip to Jacksonville, FL for the opening game match up with Ed- ward Waters College on September 3. The road trip continues the following week as the Dragons travel to At- lanta, GA to take on conference opponent Clark-Atlanta Panthers on September10. September 17 has the Dragons hosting Point University in the non-conference home opener. The Maroon Tigers of Morehouse Col- lege travel to Lane Field for a conference visit on September 24 for the second home game for the Dragons. The Dragons have home field advantage for three of the five games scheduled in October. On October1, the Dragons will travel to Tuscaloosa, AL for a conference showdown with the Stillman College Tigers. The Golden Rams from Albany State University will make their appearance at Lane Field on October 8 for the fourth conference game of the season. Homecoming 2011 is scheduled for October 15 as the Dragons will host Tuskegee University. The Dragons take to the highway for the October 22 match up with conference foe Miles College Golden Bears in Birmingham, AL. The last home game of the season features the Dragons host- ing the Thoroughbred’s of Kentucky State University on October 29. To complete the regular season schedule, the Dragons will travel to Columbia, SC to play the Tigers from Benedict College on November 5. 3 2011 LANE COLLEGE FOOTBALL FACT SHEET Institution………….……………………………………..………………..……….……Lane College Address………………….…….………………………….……….................................545 Lane Ave Jackson, TN 38301 Founded……………………..…………………………….………………..................................1882 Enrollment………………..……………………………………………………………………...2,222 President.............................................................................................Dr. Wesley Cornelious McClure Athletics Director………….....................................................................................Derrick Burroughs Athletics Department Phone…….……………...…………………………………….(731) 426-7568 Athletics Department Fax……………………...………………………….………….(731) 421-7107 Mascot………………..………………………….…………………………………………....Dragon Colors………............................................................................................Cardinal Red & Royal Blue Stadium / Capacity…….………………………………………………..…………Lane Field / 3,500 Surface…………………...……………………...………………..................................Natural Grass Affiliation……………...….…………………..….…………………………….....NCAA Division II Conference……………………………………Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Coach Information Head Coach…………………………………………………………...........Derrick Burroughs (0-10) Alma Mater………………………………………………….….............University of Memphis 1985 Football Office Phone……….… …………………………………………………… (731) 425-2540 Assistant Coaches: Mike Wallace, Malik Hoskins, Jocquise Island, Mike Fanoga, Ellix Wilson Tori Harmon Team Information Starters Lost……………………...………………………………………………………………...6 Starters Returning…………………………………...………………………………2 – Off;4- Def Lettermen Returning………………………………………………………………….…………...9 Offense…………………………………………………………………………….….............Spread Defense…………………………………………………………………………..………………...50 Sports Information Director………………………………………………...………….Roger Ogden Phone…………….………………………………...……………………………...…1-731-426-7659 SID Email……………………………………………………….….………[email protected] SID Fax………………………………………………………………………….……(731) 426-7516 Press Box Phone…………………………………………………….………………...(731) 422-6051 4 LANE COLLEGE PRESIDENT Dr. Wesley Cornelious McClure is the Ninth President of Lane College. Allison, a native of Atlanta, Ga., led the nation in field goals per game, average field goals made per game, and kick-scoring for the final nine weeks of the 1992 season. His 23-of-25 field goals made were the most in the nation, according to the NCAA, and his 92.0 percent made rated best among all kickers for the year. “I did not know about the Lou Groza Award until we played Tulsa in late October,” said Allison. “After the game, Bob Winn (Assistant Athletic Director/ Communications) came up to me in the locker room and said that I was a candidate for the award. I didn’t even know who Lou Groza was at the time. “As soon as we returned to campus, I looked up Mr. Groza’s statistics in the NFL record book, and I talked to Coach Armstrong (UM kicking coach) about his career with the Cleveland Browns.” Joe Allison is the third-leading scorer in school history with 263 points.
