Football fields and basketball courts are always the same length, but no two outfields are created equal. As Jay Jaffe explains via a look at Barry Bonds and the all-time home run leaderboard, a player’s home park can have a significant effect on how often he goes yard. It's been a couple of weeks since the 30th anniversary of Hank Aaron's historic 715th home run and the accompanying tributes, but Barry Bonds' exploits tend to keep the top of the all-time chart in the news. With homers in seven straight games and counting at this writing, Bonds has blown past Willie Mays at number three like the Say Hey Kid was standing still, which— congratulatory road trip aside—he has been, come to think of it. Baseball Prospectus' Dayn Perry penned an affectionate tribute to Aaron last week. In reviewing Hammerin' Hank's history, he notes that Aaron's superficially declining stats in 1968 (the Year of the Pitcher, not coincidentally) led him to consider retirement, but that historian Lee Allen reminded him of the milestones which lay ahead. Two years later, Aaron became the first black player to cross the 3,000 hit threshold, two months ahead of Mays. By then he was chasing 600 homers and climbing into some rarefied air among the top power hitters of all time.

    C HARLOTTE B ASE B ALL ALL-TIME CHARLOttE BASEbaLL HIGHLIGHTS • For the first time in school history, the 49ers had three players taken in the top-10 of MLB's 2017 June Draft. A total of four players were taken tying the school-record of most selections in a draft with the 1992 and 2008 squads. Brett Netzer became the fourth-highest selection in program history going in the third round to Boston while Colton Laws (7th round-Toronto) and T.J. Nichting (9th round- Baltimore) completed the top-10 selections. Zach Jarrett became the fourth selection going in the 28th round to Baltimore. A year later in 2018, Josh Maciejewski (10th-New York Yankees) and Reece Hampton (12th-Detroit) made it six draftees in two years while Harris Yett also went to Baltimore in 2019. • Charlotte set a new school-record with a .971 fielding percentage in 2016 and immediately followed that season with a .978 showing to re-set the benchmark for best fielding team in the program's history. Both seasons led Conference USA. • The Metro Conference Tournament Championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1993. All-NCAA Regional performance of Brian VandenHeuvel that year. • The NCAA Tournament appearance by at-large selection in 1998 (only 48 teams qualified then). • Winning a pair of NCAA Regional games, including eliminating N.C.     A’s News Clips, Wednesday, May 18, 2011 Oakland A's pound Los Angeles Angels 14-0 By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune Mark Ellis has endured a season-long struggle with the bat. Then how to explain a night such as Tuesday? It all came so easily for Ellis and his A's teammates in a 14-0 stomping of the Los Angeles Angels. The run total was a season high, as was their 15 hits. The A's swept the two-game series and moved into a first-place tie with the Texas Rangers in the American League West. It's the first time the A's have occupied first since June 3 last season, when they also were deadlocked with Texas. Leading the hit parade was Ellis, the second baseman who has shined defensively but has been the invisible man in the batter's box. Sure, he collected three hits Sunday against the Chicago White Sox, but one was a bloop job and another was an infield single. And he did bring home Monday's winning run against the Angels with a fielder's-choice grounder. But he hit the ball with authority Tuesday, finishing 3 for 4 with a season-high four RBIs. That lifted his average from .194 to .210. Ellis was happiest to deliver with runners on base. "I really pride myself on doing good in that situation, and I haven't done that this year," he said. "It's nice to get a couple hits with guys in scoring position." Ellis smoked a run-scoring double off the left-field wall in the A's three-run second.

New Tigers skipper Ray "Smoke" Laval opened practice on Saturday, Jan. 19, and is the favorite to win the SEC in a vote by the league's 12 head coaches. Can Nebraska claim its third straight 50-win season and turn Rosenblatt Stadium into another sea of red at the 2003 College World Series? Will Stanford journey back to America's heartland again this season, boasting another talented team under Mark Marquess? Who will be the eight teams to fight for the 2003 national championship in June? All of these questions will be answered over the course of the next 21 weeks as the college baseball season unfolds. It promises to be an exciting year. Off the field, there is excitement, too. That's the percentage of voters who checked Walker in his ninth year of 10 on the Baseball Writers' Association of America Hall of Fame ballot. It's a dramatic jump from his previous high, 34.1 percent last year -- an increase of 88 votes. However, he's going to need an 87-vote leap to reach the requisite 75 percent next year, his final season of eligibility. Jayson Stark of the Athletic noted during MLB Network's telecast that the only player to receive a jump of at least 80 votes in successive years was former Reds shortstop Barry Larkin, who was inducted in 2012. But when publicly revealed ballots had him approaching the mid-60s in percentage, Walker admitted feeling excitement he hadn't experienced in past years. "I haven't tuned in most years because there's been no chance of it really happening," Walker said. "It was nice to see this year, to watch and to have some excitement involved with it. "I was on Twitter and saw the percentages that were getting put out there for me. It made it more interesting. I'm thankful to be able to go as high as I was there before the final announcement." When discussing the vote, one must consider who else is on the ballot.

HOLMES FINCH – ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA JULY 2020 2 ABSTRACT RESEARCH PAPER: Designated Hitters and Subsequent Team Scoring Performance in Major League Baseball STUDENT: Sarah E. Cho DEGREE: Master of Science COLLEGE: Teachers College DATE: July 2020 PAGES: 27 The Designated Hitter (DH) rule in Major League Baseball (MLB) is a topic of great debate. In the National League (NL), all players take a turn at bat. However, in the American League (AL), a DH usually bats for the pitcher. MLB pitchers typically do not have strong batting averages. The DH rule was created to increase a team’s offense. This study looked at whether there is an apparent difference between the AL and the NL. In theory, a DH will lead to more hits, more runs, and therefore a higher scoring game. This study looked at the average runs per game and total home runs for the AL and NL during the 1998 through 2018 regular seasons. Since the assumptions of parametric multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were not met, a nonparametric analysis was used. The permutation test for multivariate means results showed an apparent difference between the two leagues (p < .05). A quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) was used as a follow up test and showed home runs as the variable driving the difference between the two leagues. Therefore, the AL has better scoring performance than the NL.
