DOCUMENT RESUME ED 037 225 LI 001 854 AUTHOR Barnett, Stanley A.; And Others TITLE Developmental Book Activities and Needs in Indonesia. INSTITUTION Wolf Management Services, New York, N.Y. SPONS AGENCY Agency for International Development, Washington, D.C. PUB DATE Jun 67 NOTE 231p, EDRS PRICE EDRS Price HF-$1.00 HC-$11.65 DESCRIPTORS *Books, *Developing Nations, Education, *International Organizations, Libraries, Paper (Material), *Publishing Industry, *Surveys, Textbook Publications IDENTIFIERS *Indonesia ABSTRACT This report is the fourth in a series of six studies of developmental book activity in East Asia. The scope of work in the Republic of Indonesia included assessment of books and materials in the educational process; books used by individuals for the improvement of reading skills and for learning enrichment; books for technical and professional purposes; and books used in libraries and organized reference centers. This study was conducted in the midst of efforts that were being taken by the Government of Indonesia to rebuild that nation's shattered economy, Stringent reforms had begun to slow the inflation and ameliorate the problems which, in recent years, have distorted the Indonesian book market and book industry, as they have all other aspects of life. It was found that not only is the nation far short of the reading materials needed to serve school-age children and out-of-school youth and adults, but enrollments are growing at a much faster rate than population--and the problems entailed in providing books for potential readers have increased, not stabilized. For the immediate future, Indonesia needs assistance from all book-oriented agencies in the outside world. -

SETTING HISTORY STRAIGHT? INDONESIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY IN THE NEW ORDER A thesis presented to the faculty of the Center for International Studies of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Sony Karsono August 2005 This thesis entitled SETTING HISTORY STRAIGHT? INDONESIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY IN THE NEW ORDER by Sony Karsono has been approved for the Department of Southeast Asian Studies and the Center for International Studies by William H. Frederick Associate Professor of History Josep Rota Director of International Studies KARSONO, SONY. M.A. August 2005. International Studies Setting History Straight? Indonesian Historiography in the New Order (274 pp.) Director of Thesis: William H. Frederick This thesis discusses one central problem: What happened to Indonesian historiography in the New Order (1966-98)? To analyze the problem, the author studies the connections between the major themes in his intellectual autobiography and those in the metahistory of the regime. Proceeding in chronological and thematic manner, the thesis comes in three parts. Part One presents the author’s intellectual autobiography, which illustrates how, as a member of the generation of people who grew up in the New Order, he came into contact with history. Part Two examines the genealogy of and the major issues at stake in the post-New Order controversy over the rectification of history. Part Three ends with several concluding observations. First, the historiographical engineering that the New Order committed was not effective. Second, the regime created the tools for people to criticize itself, which shows that it misunderstood its own society. Third, Indonesian contemporary culture is such that people abhor the idea that there is no single truth. -

In his speech, Soeharto said he wanted to pass on the facts “as far as we know them” concerning the situation “which we have all been experiencing and witnessing together” in connection with the September 30th Movement. For an English-language translation of the speech, which ran to some 6,000 words, see “Speech by Major-General Suharto on October 15, 1965, to Central and Regional Leaders of the National Front”, in The Editors, “Selected Documents Relating to the September 30th Movement and Its Epilogue”, Indonesia, Vol. 1 (April 1966), Cornell Modern Indonesia Project, at pp. 160–78. On the National Front, see Harold Crouch, The Army and Politics in Indonesia, rev. ed. (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1988), p. 34. Sukarno had at one stage privately told the American ambassador he saw the National Front as a vehicle through which he could create a one-party state. The parties successfully opposed the idea, however, and the front became a propaganda agency for the government, increasingly influenced by Communists.
