College of Arts, Sc. & Comm., Quepem, Goa Dr. Sushila Sawant Mendes: Lusitanization Versus Assertion in Goa: The 1583 Revolt in Assolna, Velim, Cuncolim -- Palarch’s Journal of Archaeology of Egypt/Egyptology 17(7), ISSN 1567-214x Keywords: Goa, lusitanization, 1583 Revolt, Assolna, Velim, Cuncolim BRIEF SUMMARY This paper entitled, “Lusitanization versus Assertion in Goa: the 1583 Revolt in Assolna, Velim, Cuncolim” is about the history of Goa and reflects how the Goan identity has been influenced and shaped by its history of Portuguese colonial rule in Goa from 1510 to 1961.The paper makes a case study of a revolt by the people of Goa in three sister villages of Assolna., Velim and Cuncolim in south Goa. This was a microcosmic representation of the assertion by the people of Goa against the policy of lusitanization carried on by the Church and supported by the Portuguese State throughout the colonial rule in Goa. The paper argues about the existence of a militant spirit that existed among certain sections of the Goan population which finally led to the liberation of the colonial rule on 19th December 1961. Lusitanization is derived from the word Lusitanian; a term which has been often used to describe the Portuguese people. Mendonça explains that the Portuguese are a result of a long process of fusion of peoples and cultures. The earliest inhabitants that history could register were the celtas (Celts) and iberos (Iberians). The fusion of these two groups resulted in one of the biggest Iberian tribes, the lusitanos (Lusitanians).1 Lusitanization is therefore the spread of colonial ideology by Portugal during their spread of colonialism.

Gilliland, Chair Portuguese colonial periodicals of 19th century India represent a rich source of information that might be used by scholars in comparative literature, history, post-colonial studies, and other humanities and social sciences-related disciplines. These periodicals are markers of modalities of colonial dominance and the ensuing hybridities that led to formation of the complex Indo-Portuguese identity (-ies) in the 19th century Indian sub-continent. Although the majority of these collections remain in India and Portugal, these periodicals also form a part of extensive South Asia collections held in academic libraries in the United States. These periodicals have often been overlooked as a source of information on the colonial milieu of 19th century India because access to them has been problematic for several reasons.

  • The Portuguese and Jesuits in Goa and Salcete
Please provide footnote text The Portuguese and Jesuits in Goa and Salcete In late 1510, after almost a year of intermittent fighting, the island city and har- bor of Goa on the west coast of India was finally wrested from the control of the rulers of Bijapur by the Portuguese adventurer Afonso de Albuquerque (1453–1515). The port and the four landlocked islands of Chorāo, Divar, Jua, and Tiswadi in the estuary of the Mandovi River became the administra- tive and commercial center of Portuguese affairs throughout the East, while at the same time the Portuguese gradually extended their influence into the neighboring hinterland (see map 1).1 Although some Dominican friars arrived in 1510, no large missionary enterprise was undertaken before the arrival of the Franciscans in 1517. From their headquarters in Goa, Franciscan preach- ers visited many parts of western India and journeyed as far as Sri Lanka and the Malay Archipelago. Such was their success that in 1534 Pope Paul III Farnese (r.1534–49) made Goa a bishopric, with spiritual jurisdiction over all Portuguese possessions from the Cape of Good Hope across South and East Asia to China, though itself suffragan to the archbishopric of Funchal in Madeira. When Francis Xavier (1506–52) landed at Goa on May 6, 1542, he took over the Franciscan college of Santa Fé for the training of native missionaries; this was re-named the College of Saint Paul and became the headquarters of all Jesuit missions in the East. It was from here that the Jesuits expanded fur- ther along the Indian coast.
