BWA Tour Forslag 04JUL19 Brazil We invite you to forget what you know about Brazil. We have much more than carnival and football. From the south (with its canyons and the largest remnant of Atlantic forest in the country), to the North (with beautiful beaches, culture and tradition), our country offers options that appeal to different traveler profiles. Ecotourism is the natural vocation of the country, which has numerous conservation areas that keep this amazing sceneries. Culture comes from a mix of ethnicities that transformed Brazil in what is now the world's most cultural mixing country. From Japanese to German, everywhere you find descendants from all over the world living in harmony and creating a unique way of life. Always full of happiness! The weather is an important attraction, since it is hot year in much of the country, and the southern region also please those who like a milder climate, with a more marked winter. Dive sites, trails, the wetlands, the Amazon, indigenous communities, culture, history and intense contact with nature. This is Brazil! Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in Rio de Janeiro River in Pantanal. Historical center in Morretes Visited places Rio de Janeiro Known as the Marvelous City, Rio de Janeiro is an amazing, and magical place! Surrounded by stunning mountains, white sandy beaches and tropical rain forest, Rio has one of the most spectacular sceneries and ecosystems of the world. A Portuguese navigator landed in the city in January 1502 and confusing bay with a river (Rio) named the region as "Rio de Janeiro." During the 17th century the city became important because of sugar cane export from its port, however what really made it boom was the gold rush in the 18th century. In 1763 the city became the capital of Brazil and continued as such until the creation of Brasilia in 1960. Rio is now considered the vacation capital of Brazil and its inhabitants, known as 'Cariocas', who live life with enthusiasm. At the beach, try the "mate" accompanied by the famous biscuit flour O Globo. In late afternoon a good choice is the neighbourhood of Urca where people gather to see the sunset and the night arrive. There are many options for food and snacks along the beach, including fresh coconut water and blended acai with granola, a local favourite. Be sure to check out some of the night markets and the famous Sunday Brazilian artisan and handicraft market located in the neighbourhood of Ipanema, just blocks away from the beach. Carnival and New Year's Eve are the main events in Rio, where you can meet travellers from around the world! Besides the festivities, mountaineering and climbing are very present during the days of Rio, and it is easy to see why, with the mountain rising off the beaches, resulting from the separation of the South American and African continents. There is always something to discover and enjoy in Rio, from the sunset at Arpoador's beach, samba in Lapa, walking through the streets of Santa Teresa, to of course, Carnival, creating some of the greatest mix of cultures in Brazil. You can venture on bike through the city, climb Sugar Loaf mountain or trek to Christ the Redeemer, visit the multiple and diverse beaches in the city, and even take a favela tour to have a once in a lifetime raw, and heart expanding experience. Foz do Iguaçú Foz do Iguaçu is nothing less than a "New Wonders of Nature," according to the New Seven Wonders Foundation. It is hard to imagine any person who has visited Foz do Iguaçu and was not delighted with the strength and beauty of the falls, a series of 275 waterfalls reaching up to 90 meters high. On the Brazilian side, a trail takes you to visit the bottom of the falls with a view to Devil's Throat, and on the Argentinian side, the most rudimentary track, "Wild," will take you to the top of the Devil's Throat with a spectacular view. We definitely recommend visiting both sides! In addition to this wonder of nature, Foz do Iguaçu provides an abundance of interesting and adventurous activities, such as taking the Macuco Safari Boat Tour, which runs through the canyons and leads you to take a bath in the waterfalls of Cataratas do Iguaçu. There are also helicopter, hiking and rafting tours available for the adventurous. Visiting the "Usina Hidrelétrica de Itaipu" (Hydroelectric Power Plant of Iguaçu) is also a must-see attraction of the giant turbines which turn water into energy. Located on the triple border between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, the city saw a large increase in population and economic growth from the construction of the Itaipu Hydroelectric plant. It represents an important role in the region, as a large part of Brazil relies on its energy production. • 1 Manaus Amazônia The Amazon, also known as the Amazon rainforest or the Amazon Jungle, is an abundantly humid forest that covers most of the Amazon Basin of South America. This regions is one of the six major biomes of the planet, reaching about 7 million square km, and approximately 5 million of it is covered by tropical rainforest. Nine nations have territories in the Amazon; Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and France. However, the largest part of this territory belongs to Brazil. The amazon represents more than a half of the tropical forests that exist in the world with the greatest biodiversity of any other rainforest. The most common tours in this area are called "observation tours" in which visitors can walk through the forest, observing the diverse animal and plant species, visiting indigenous communities, and even trying their hand at fishing on Amazonian Rivers. To take the most advantage of the trip, it is recommended to visit the state during the months of July to November, when the weather is more stable. The gastronomy of the place is ideal for those who like to try new cuisine. Many of the ingredients used for food preparation are stemmed from this very forest, such as the Cupuaçu fruit and Jambu fish tips, which are a great try for visitors! Salvador Salvador is the capital of Bahia state, in the upper northeast of Brazil. This city is full of culture, especially of the african-Brazilian civilization. The historical center of Salvador is known by its Portuguese colonial architecture with several memorial monuments of the seventeenth to the twentieth century, where Pelourinho, a famous Brazilian neighbourhood declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, is located. Salvador city is divided in "Cidade Alta" and "Cidade Baixa," and to travel between these two regions it is necessary to take the “Lacerda Elevator,” which in itself is a sight to see. At Cidade Baixa it is recommended to explore the beaches of Salvador. One of more hectic beaches is the Porto da Barra beach, and those who like more quiet and relaxing beaches, such as Itapuã and Stella Maris, should stay further from the center of town. If you love big festivals and you are in town in February, look out for the Carnival celebration. Bahia’s Carnival is celebrated with electric trios (Trio elétrico), an abundance of music with great Brazilian singers and of course, lots of parties. The strongest characteristic of Bahian cuisine is the use of pepper, so there are several options of well-seasoned dishes. The most famous is especially is the “Acarajé.” Acarajé is a dish made from peeled beans formed into a ball and then deep-fried in dendê olive oil. It is served split in half and stuffed with vatapá and/or caruru, a salad made out of green and red tomatoes, fried shrimps and homemade hot pepper sauce. We recommend you go to the neighbourhood of Rio Vermelho to try acarajé prepared by Dinha and Regina. Other typical dishes are the bobó, moqueca and caruru (stewed okra). Be sure to try what the region has to offer! • Guanabara Bay
Guanabara Bay - 2B m³ of water. 384km². 55 rivers contribute an average annual flow of 350m³/s (Portuguese: Baía de Guanabara, IPA: [ɡwanaˈbaɾɐ]) is an oceanic bay located in Southeast Brazil in the state of Rio de Janeiro. On its western shore lies the city of Rio de Janeiro and Duque de Caxias, and on its eastern shore the cities of Niterói and São Gonçalo. Four other municipalities surround the bay's shores. Guanabara Bay is the second largest bay in area in Brazil (after the All Saints' Bay), at 412 square kilometres (159 sq mi), with a perimeter of 143 kilometres (89 mi). Guanabara Bay is 31 kilometres (19 mi) long and 28 kilometres (17 mi) wide at its maximum. Its 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) wide mouth is flanked at the eastern tip by the Pico do Papagaio (Parrot's Peak) and the western tip by Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf). There have been three major oil spills in Guanabara Bay. The most recent was in 2000 when a leaking underwater pipeline released 1,300,000 litres (340,000 US gal) of oil into the bay, destroying large swaths of the mangrove ecosystem. Recovery measures are currently being attempted, but more than a decade after the incident, the mangrove areas have not returned to life. Max. length 31 km (19 mi) Max. width 28 km (17 mi) Surface area 412 km2 (159 sq mi) The bay has a mean 1.0 tidal range and exhibits a mixed , mainly semidiurnal period. The area weighted depth is 5.7m and the maximum depth is 58 m.

The Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro has undergone profound alterations of its natural environmental conditions.

Abstract: Exclusion Territories are geographical areas under the action of degenerative environmental phenomena of anthropogenic origin, which compromise quality of life in general. One of the greatest examples of such areas is the Guanabara Bay and its surroundings, the scene of some of the worst disastrous incidents and locale of frequent episodes of human misery. This article presents a brief description of the main characteristics of the region, providing some technological suggestions of biogeographic recovery to be adopted by public policies that intend to align themselves with the good practices of ecological economy, sustainability and quality of life.

MUSSEL Perna perna MUSSEL Perna perna EXTRACTION AND COMMERCIALIZATION IN GUANABARA BAY, BRAZIL HUGO LAGE AND SILVIO JABLONSKI Faculdade de Oceanografia; Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro; R. São Francisco Xavier, 524, Bl. ABSTRACT Guanabara bay in the state of Rio de Janeiro receives industrial effluents and a high load of domestic sewage from a watershed of more than 4,000 km 2.

ABSTRACT The use of foraminifera as indicators is due to the sensitivity in response to environmental variations and in this paper, we present this correlation in two Brazilian coastal areas: Guanabara Bay and Baixada Santista. In Guanabara Bay, the species found show four sub-environments. A: marine influence, B: environmentally threatened, C: pollution by industrial waste and D: contamination by domestic sewage. In the Baixada Santista two sub-environments are highlighted: Sub-environment 1 presents typical associations of marine environment indicating greater water renewal, and in sub-environment 2 predominant species with continental input where water renewal is less efficient. *Corresponding author Patrícia Pinheiro Beck Eichler, Graduate Program in Geodynamics and Geophysics Laboratory of Marine Geology and Geophysics and Environmental Monitoring, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (PPGG, GGEMMA, UFRN), University Campos, Lagoa Nova, 59072-970 Natal, RN, Brazil.
