Time Will Crawl: Representation of 1980s Cold War Culture and Politics in Popular Music in the West By Alex Robbins Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in History University of Portland December 2017 Robbins 1 The Cold War represented more than a power struggle between East and West and the fear of mutually assured destruction. Not only did people fear the loss of life and limb but the very nature of their existence came into question. While deemed the “cold” war due to the lack of a direct military conflict, battle is not all that constitutes a war. A war of ideas took place. Despite the attempt to eliminate outside influence, both East and West felt the impact of each other’s cultural movements.

  • The New Soul of an Old Machine | 80S Essentials, Industrial Revolution
80s Essentials, Industrial Revolution [Because the decade was a formative time for so much more than just our beloved heavy metal, today we're pleased to present you with a look at fifteen essential industrial albums from the 1980s.] I’m neither historian nor sociologist enough to speak to the politico- economic milieu that shaped industrial music’s formative clatterings, but a few general observations may suffice. The advanced industrial world was hardly being ground in the same way as by the ravenous gears of the late- eighteenth/early-nineteenth century Industrial Revolution (cf. Friedrich Engels on The Condition of the Working Class in England), but the 1970s and ‘80s saw an increasingly aggressive attack on the social welfare state that had so flourished in the three or four decades since the end of World War II. The elections of Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and Helmut Kohl (in Britain, the U.S., and West Germany, respectively) ushered in an era of neoliberal government retrenchment that would largely define the domestic political debate in the years to follow, while throwing the (often uneasy) balance between capital and labor into disrepair throughout the rich world. Reagan’s tough-talking rhetoric meant that many of the signs of rapprochement and detente that had offered brief glimmers of, if not hope, then perhaps bleakly muted optimism in the 1970s gave way to a renewed era of Cold War stridency and military hand-wringing. In many ways, then, the same social, political, economic, and cultural context that led to the development of punk’s disaffected worldview and heavy metal’s increasingly doom-saying weightiness would also provide grist for the eternally wending mill of nascent musical experimentalism that gradually coalesced into industrial music.

In their place, pure instrumental, Tracklist: unstructured noise-rock, played by long-haired and moustachioed types! A (22 untitled tracks) band can barely have undergone a more extreme metamorphosis. • Innovation Und Radikale Theorie in Der Popmusik 1960-1980

Fade To Grey: Post-Punk and Lost Modernist Futures Madelena Caron Professor Longabucco (GLS) This thesis has been submitted on this day of April 15th, 2021 in partial fulfillment of the degree requirements for the Global Liberal Studies Bachelor of Arts degree. 1 Abstract The many sub-genres that fall under the rather vague umbrella term, “post-punk,” tend to be characterized by a nostalgia and a rumination on cultural objects, movements, and aesthetics of the past— more specifically, of the modernist period, lasting from roughly the turn of the twentieth century through the 1940s. The scope of this project includes several bands from the United Kingdom and Germany that belong to various sub-genres of post-punk (of which there are many): Ultravox, Spandau Ballet, Japan, Visage, Cabaret Voltaire, and Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft. These bands share something in common, despite their sonic and aesthetic differences—namely, frequent citations of culture from the modernist period and, despite their historical references, formal experimentation with the boundaries of music and pop culture. The synthesizer revolutionized late-twentieth-century music, and each of these bands merges its retro themes and/or aesthetics with its sonically futuristic music in a slightly different way. This project delves into the following questions: In which ways and why did post-punk musicians engage in dialogue with, and take inspiration from, modernist culture in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s? What about the political, social, and economic climates of the
