Threats to Biodiversity Common Weeds Weeds have been categorised to reflect factors such as invasiveness, potential to spread, ‘perceived’ and ‘actual’ impacts and their environmental, economic and social impact. Some of the more common and emerging pest plants known from the Adelaide Hills Council district fall into one or more of the below categories. WEED CATEGOREY CODE DETAILS Weeds of National Significance WoNS Australia’s most invasive, high impact pest plants. There are national programs and strategies for each of the WoNS. Declared Weeds D These are supported by legislation (Natural Resources Management Act 2004) as they are those that present a significant threat to agriculture, the environment and public health and safety. Landowners have a legal responsibility to manage these plants. Alert Weeds A Declared plants not yet established in South Australia and pose a serious threat. Landowners must report alert weeds found on their property as early detection is important so the plant can be eradicated before it spreads and becomes a more serious problem. With early and appropriate management, Alert List weeds can be successfully contained or eradicated. See Relevant Contacts below. Priority Environmental Weeds E Invasive exotics which are not restricted to WoNS or Declared plants, but are currently considered a local problem or have the potential to become a problem within the District. Many of these are ornamental garden plants which have escaped into the bushland, actively dispersed by wind and water, birds and feral animals such as foxes. We have had a very cold winter and now as spring emerges the cold remains with very wet conditions. Oh how I long for some warm sunshine to brighten our day. However the Hakeas have stood up to the cold weather very well and many have now flowered. Rainfall in August was 30mm but in the first 6 days of September another 56mm was recorded making the soil very moist indeed. The rain kept falling in September with 150mm recorded. Fortunately my drainage work of spoon drains and deeper drains with slotted pipe with blue metal cover on top shed a lot of water straight into the Council drains. Most of the Hakeas like well drained conditions, so building up beds and getting rid of excess water will help in making them survive. The collection here now stands at 162 species out of a possible 169. Seed of some of the remaining species hopefully will arrive here before Christmas so that I can propagate them over summer. Wanderings. Barbara and I spent most of June and July in northern NSW and Queensland to escape the cold conditions down here. I did look around for Hakeas and visited some members’ gardens. Just to the east of Cann River I found Hakea decurrens ssp. physocarpa, Hakea ulicina and Hakea teretifolia ssp. hirsuta all growing on the edge of a swamp. -

Lack of studies on the styles of the sister families to Asteraceae, Goodeniaceae and Calyceraceae, obscures our understanding of the origin and evolution of this reproductive feature in these groups. The aim of this work was to perform a comparative study of style morphology and to discuss the relevance of im- portant features in the evolution of Asteraceae and its sister families. Methods The histochemistry, venation and general morphology of the styles of members of Goodeniaceae, Calyceraceae and early branching lineages of Asteraceae were analysed and put in a phylogenetic framework to dis- cuss the relevance of style features in the evolution of these families. Key Results The location of lipophilic substances allowed differentiation of receptive from non-receptive style papillae, and the style venation in Goodeniaceae and Calyceraceae proved to be distinctive. -

Plants of the West Coast family: GoodeniaCeae Scaevola crassifolia THICK-LEAVED SCAEVOLA Labill. Flowering period: July–February. Description: Erect to ground-hugging, often intensely sticky-leaved shrub, 0.1–1.5 m high in the Perth region. Leaves variable depending upon location and proximity to the ocean-front, usually paddle-shaped and rounded, 30–75 mm long, 10–33 mm wide with finely toothed margins. Flowers terminal to sub-terminal, in open heads, petals 7–10 mm long with a prominent style protruding from just beyond the flower. Seed a hard nut, within a thin, fleshy, flattened spherical fruit 2.5 mm wide, 1.5 mm long, green, ripening yellow to orange. Pollination: Open pollinated by a variety of insects. Distribution: Widespread from Shark Bay to Eyre in the Great Australian Bight. In the Perth region a number of forms occur in frontal dunes or over limestone. The limestone form is similar to the clone-forming type occurring on Rottnest Island and is lower growing and can form growth circles with age as the centre parts of the plant die out. At Swanbourne Beach both the clonal and shrub form co-occur. Habit Propagation: From cuttings taken in early summer. Strike cuttings directly into pots to be used in plantings and ensure plants are sun-hardened to maximise survival when transplanted. Plant in full sun. Uses in restoration: One of the main species for primary dune restoration. Adapts well to both full exposure and protected sites and is a useful nurse plant for establishing other slower growing and taller species such as coastal Acacia species. -

Bamford Consulting Ecologists 23 Plover Way KINGSLEY WA 6026 6th April 2017 Bindaring Park - Fauna Assessment Summary Bamford Consulting Ecologists was commissioned by Coterra Environment to conduct a Level 1 fauna assessment (desktop review and site inspection) of Bindaring Park in Bassendean (the study area). The fauna survey is required to provide information on the ecological values for the Town of Bassendean’s Stage 2 Bindaring Wetland Concept Plan Development. This plan include developing design options (within wetland area) to enhance ecological values and habitat. The purpose of this report is to provide information on the fauna values of the habitat, particularly for significant species, and an overview of the ecological function of the site within the local and regional context. This assessment focuses on vertebrate fauna associated with the wetland and surrounding parkland vegetation within the study area, with consideration for connectivity with the Swan River. An emphasis is placed on locally-occurring conservation significant species and their habitat. Relevant species include Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo, Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo, and other local native species such as the Water Rat or Rakali. The fauna investigations were based on a desktop assessment and a field survey conducted in February 2017. The desktop study identified 180 vertebrate fauna species as potentially occurring in the Bindaring Park study area (see Table 3 and Appendix 5): five fish, 6 frogs, 20 reptiles, 134 birds, 8 native and 7 introduced mammals. -
