We have already heard them in the anthem, one of the best known musical settings, from 19th century British composer John Stainer in his “Crucifixion,” as well as the Gospel reading. You see it on billboards and banners. Most of us have memorized it. However, the popular interpretation of it is probably not where we want to go with it today. It is not about you, not about individuals, nor is it only about going to heaven after we die. It is about God’s love for the world as we find it now, full of contradictions and evil. It is about systems of government and empires that are often unjust, what theologian Walter Wink calls “domination systems.” Eternal life is not only about a life to come after death, but a life abundant in Jesus Christ right now. We need to look at the context in which we find verses 16 and 17. First, it is set in the middle of the story of the encounter between Jesus and Nicodemus.     04 Amzallag origin_Antiguo Oriente 28/06/2016 09:11 a.m. Página 99 THE ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF THE SARAPH SYMBOL NISSIM AMZALLAG [email protected] Ben-Gurion University in the Negev Beer Sheba, Israel Abstract: The Origin and Evolution of the Saraph Symbol The abundance of uraeus iconography in Late Bronze Age and Iron Age Canaan has led most scholars to interpret the saraph, a winged and/or burning serpent evoked in the Bible, as an Egyptian religious symbol borrowed by the Canaanites and thereafter integrated in the Yahwistic sphere. The strong affinity of the saraph symbol with a local serpent species, Echis coloratus, however, challenges this view. It reveals that the saraph was an indigenous Canaanite symbol later influenced in its representation by the Egyptian glyptic. Comparison of the biology of Echis coloratus and the literary source relating to the saraph suggests that the latter was once approached as an animal that guarded the copper mining areas of the Arabah and Sinai against access by unau- thorized persons. By extension, it became the privileged symbol of copper metallurgy and its proximate spheres of influence. It is concluded that the essential relation bet- ween YHWH and the seraph is probably rooted in the metallurgical background of the god of Israel. Furthermore, the closer affinities of the properties of the uraeus with Echis coloratus rather than with the cobra species that symbolize it suggest that this Egyptian symbol had been borrowed from Canaan as early as the pre-Dynastic period before influencing it in the reverse direction in the Late Bronze Age.

Back in Moses’ day, when the people complained against God, God punished them by setting poisonous serpents upon them. Many were bitten to death.     Scripture: 2 Kings 18:1-4 Message: The End of “Nehushtan” October 29, 2017; Bethel CRC, Brockville, ON Pastor Jack Van de Hoef On the first Sunday of this month, Pastor Marilyn Savage preached a sermon on the story of the revival initiated by King Hezekiah. She read the story as it was told in the book of Chronicles. This morning we conclude the month of October looking at another story of the reforms by King Hezekiah, as told in the book of Kings This week is the 500th anniversary of an event that sparked the Protestant Reformation. On the evening before All Saints Day, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, October 31, 1517, a priest in the Roman Catholic Church named Martin Luther is said to have nailed a document of 95 statements questioning various practices in the Roman Catholic Church. He wasn’t intending to leave the church or start a new church. His challenge sparked a controversy, which resulted in what we now call the Protestant Reformation. One of the themes that came out of Luther’s 95 theses was the misplaced emphasis on the traditions and practices of the church as an important part of our salvation. Luther read in the Bible that we are saved by grace, not by anything that we do (Romans 1:17 was a life- changing verse). The Roman Catholic Church, in Luther’s time, had added practices like penance and giving money as a way to ensure going to heaven. The church had limited access to the Bible to only the clergy, using pictures and symbols in the church as a way of teaching the people.
