WALIA journal 31(S3): 116-121, 2015 Available online at www.Waliaj.com ISSN 1026-3861 © 2015 WALIA An analysis of intellectual and literary evolution of sami el-baroudi in the three periods Seyyedeh Akram Rakhshandehnia *, Seyyed Esmaeil Hosseini Ajdad Niaki Assistant Professor, Department of Arabic Literature and Language, University of Guilan Abstract: The works of Sami el-Baroudi has outstanding literary features, compared with those of other contemporary Arab poets. His extensive and deep knowledge of literature of Golden Period, and the influence of this period on his poetic language and form, purification of poetry of extraneous figures of language and of all what is not poetry, honest expression of feelings, frankness, and relatively good knowledge of classic principles of poetry, especially those of Arab poetry, and knowledge of the thoughts of modern reformists were among the characteristics of Baroudi, which very much contributed to his intellectual and poetic evolution; he is considered as linking chain between modern and old Arab literature, and the pioneer of modern Arab poetry. Given the findings of this research, literary life of Baroudi can be divided into three periods: imitation, revolution, and consolidation. This paper studies the intellectual evolution of Baroudi, and factors affecting such evolution by analyzing the poems he wrote in each of these three periods. Chapter II is devoted to the ‘ Alid opposition of the period, i.e . the revolt of al-Mukhtar ibn Abi ‘ Ubaid al-Thaqafi, and its nature, causes and consequences. The ‘ Asabiyya(tribal feuds), a dominant phenomenon of the Umayyad period, is examined in the third chapter. The Iqta' System of Iraq Under the Buwayhids Tsugitaka Sato
THE IQTA' SYSTEM OF IRAQ UNDER THE BUWAYHIDS TSUGITAKA SATO* In 334 A. H. (946 A.D.), having established his authority in Baghdad, Mu'izz al-Dawla granted iqta's in the Sawad to his commanders, his asso- ciates, and his Turks. This is the formation of the so-called "military" iqta' system in the Islamic history. The appearance of the military iqta's brought about not only the evolution of the Islamic state, but also the transformation of the Iraqi society during the 10-11th centuries and of the other countries in the following periods. Nizam al-Mulk understood this as the change from bistagan (cash pay) to iqta',(1) while al-Maqrizi described as the change from 'ata' to iqta' in the same meaning.(2) As for the iqta' system under the Buwayhids, H. F. Amedroz first translated the Miskawayh's text into English with annotations,(3) and then C. H. Becker tried to realize the iqta' system in the history of 'Lehen' from the early Islamic period to the Ottoman Turks.(4) A. A, al-Duri, who studied the economic history of the Buwayhid Iraq, made clear the character of iqta' comparing it with milk (private land) and waqf, though the reality of iqta' holding remained to be investigated in future.(5) On the other hand, Cl. Cahen published the general survey of iqta' in the history of the Islamic land holding, which gave us usefull informations concerning the right and obligation of soldiers, and the fall of peasants by way of himaya (protection) and the loan at high interest.(6) We also find the general description of iqta' in the study of H. -

Received 14 June 2021, Accepted 28 July 2021 This research focuses on criticism and praise in Arabic literature, history and poetry towards those in charge of the scientific movement in the Medieval Era. The research method was theoretical and qualitative. Many poets and scholars praised the rulers and sultans who established mosques and other educational institutions (madrasa-s) based on endowments, which had a role in sciences, intellectual and religious renaissance. They were subject to criticism or praise for their work or the educational role they followed. The topics of praise to the ulama centered on, their diligence and dissemination of science, as well as of their behavior and moral manners. On the other hand, the criticism of poetry centered on the mistakes of some scholars, their scientific stances in religious matters and criticizing scholars of the sultans for their attitudes in serving the rulers. Poets were also interested in criticizing scholars (ulama) who moved away from the path of morality, virtue, and shari‘a, and who lead the teaching without qualification or mismanagement of the educational process; and therefore do not preserve the rules of morality in lessons, education or discussions, and their lack of good morals towards students. -

D.S.RICE THE UNIQUE IBN AL-BAWWAB MANUSCRIPT The text of the Qur'an was recorded'in the Prophet's lifetime, on a variety of writing materials.These inclu- ded such diverse materials as papyrus, parchment, leather, limestone slabs,shoulder blades,ribs, saddle- boards, &c. The Qur'an was first collectedunder the first caliph, Abu Bakr, and codified under the third caliph, 'Uthman. It was, in all likelihood, written on parchmenton both occasions,although one sourcehas it that papyrus was used on the first. All the early Qur'ans which have so far come to light are on parchment, with the exception of a small frag- ment on papyruswhich is attributed to the third Islamic century. The earliest Qur'ans w\ich have reachedus are written in variety of angular scripts commonly-but inappro- priately-describedas Kufic. No completeKufic Qur'an has, to my knowledge, survived and none is provided with a colophon. It is still a matter of controversy whether we possessany Qur'an which can be dated to the first century of the Muslim era.There are a number "signatures" of coclices which bear of the caliphs 'Uthman and 'Ali, but these have been shown to be later pious forgeries. Thanks to the studies published in the course of the last fifty years,especially by B. Moritz, J. von Karaba- cek, G. Bergstrásser,O. Pretzl,A. Grohmann, N. Abbott, and G. Levi della Vida much progresshas been made in the provisional dating of certain Kufic Qur'ans to the late first and to the second century of the Hijra. -

The main discourse on Islamic art in the western academia primarily views Islamic art through the lens of art history and sociology of art. Islamic art is considered as sacred in Islamic civilisation and culture, and derives its sanctity from the Quran as the fountain from which it has emanated, which Muslims consider to be the Word of God, much like Christ is the Word of God in Christianity. The Quran has played a formative role in shaping the trinity of sacred Islamic art which is Quranic recitation, calligraphy and architecture. However, another approach which not only is viable but can be considered of great importance to the study of Islamic art, is the employment and utilisation of principles of Islamic philosophy and Sufism which were the pillars of the intellectual milieu in which a given work of art is produced. The application of such principles allows a more comprehensive and detailed interpretation of a work of art. In this paper, the primary Islamic philosophy and sufi doctrines that will be dis- cussed are the concepts of imagination, colour, and calligraphy and examples of their applica- tion in the khānqāh and shrine ensemble of Shaykh Ṣafi al-Din Ardabīlī in Ardabil, Iran. The Nature of Riba in Islam
THE NATURE OF RIBA IN ISLAM By: M. Umer Chapra1 Abstrak Perdebatan masalah riba seperti tidak pernah selesai di diskusikan oleh banyak kalangan, baik akademis, organisasi keagamaan, bahkan sampai pada forum-forum intenasional. Beberapa terminologi dibahas dengan baik dalam tulisan ini yang dimulai dengan pelarangan riba itu sendiri kemudian pembagian-pembagian riba, diantaranya riba al-Nasi’ah dan riba al-Fadl, serta implikasi dari dua bentuk riba tersebut. Pembahasan didukung dengan pendapat-pendapat para ulama dan ekonom yang merujuk langsung dari ayat-ayat al-Qur’an, sampai pada perdebatan hukum. Demikian juga al-Qur’an sangat jelas membedakan antara riba dan perdagangan, namun pelarangan riba sangat jelas bahkan diperkuat dengan hadits-hadits yang dengan eksplisit melarang riba. Dijelaskan pula tentang perbedaan antara riba dan bunga bank.
