History and dream of a winery

In October 1955 in , in the heart of , someone realised that gathe- ring together all the farmers who had worked their vineyards for so long alone, might lead to something completely new. The Cantina sociale di Nizza Monferrato owes its foundation also to the pride and the local patriotism of its town and its people, who always lived for and believed in grapes. The Cantina di Nizza has always worked hard to keep its equipment and technology and, of course, its ideas, up to date, and equally importantly, striven to stay in the vanguard of selling and producing wine, while at the same time respecting the tradition of the region. This because for the last almost 60 years, Cantina di Nizza’s aim has been carrying over to our pre- sent the tradition and the secrets of the ancient way of “wine-making”. This was possible just by unravelling the secrets and techniques of wine-making – sometimes archaic and indefinite, often the result of the talent and the wisdom of those who know how – to hand down these methods and improve them with the help of the technology and new enological knowledge. In this way, the Cantina di Nizza is both a witness to the past and an interpreter of the future of a part of Piedmontese culture and life.

The Monferrato

Monferrato is a generous wine producing region – a historically disputed borderland – in the heart of Piedmont, stretching from the edge of to the eastern boundaries of , while from North to South it covers the area from the hilly part of the river to the Langa of Asti. A vast area where the wine rules uncontested, covering a wide range of varieties reflecting the wide differences in the landscape. From the Ovada area dotted with castles and vineyards, to the territory of Casale where the final hill tops overlook the rice-fields. Then, in the centre, the Monferrato of Asti, where most of the DOC wines (such as , Moscato, Dolcetto, Freisa, Grignolino and Asti spumante) are produced and from where you can take in at a glance the lawns, fields and poplar-groves of the valleys, the hills and the vineyards, kingdom of vine. This is the kind of landscape you will come across, going up between and Montal- do Scarampi, between and Santo Stefano , between Costigliole and Montegrosso, between and Nizza Monferrato. This is where the heart of Monferrato beats.
