  • Halal Ecosystem: Prospect for Growth in Bangladesh
International Journal of Business and Society, Vol. 18 S1, 2017, 205-222 HALAL ECOSYSTEM: PROSPECT FOR GROWTH IN BANGLADESH Nabila Nisha. North South University Mehree Iqbal North South University ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to draw special attention to Bangladesh as one of the potential markets where the concept of Halal ecosystem can be developed. An overview of this dynamic concept, followed by the current stance, challenges and future outlook of Bangladesh regarding Halal ecosystem is thereby described. This study applies content analysis to identify general trends and research results of Halal ecosystem in a descriptive form. Using secondary sources, it also provides future directions for both Bangladesh and the global context. Government support and regulatory frameworks are crucial at this stage to strengthen confidence amongst consumers, industry players and investors regarding Halal ecosystem in Bangladesh. Moreover, regional and global arrangements for Halal certifications are necessary to fully embrace this concept in Bangladesh and beyond. However, lack of empirical data and research on Halal ecosystem limits the intensity of arguments in this study. Besides, absence of proper information regarding Halal certifications, database of companies involved in this dynamic process and initiatives of government and regulatory bodies in Bangladesh further hinder the presentation of a wholesome picture of Halal ecosystem. Keywords: Halal Ecosystem; Islamic Finance; Halal Industry; Islamic Economy; Muslim Consumers; Bangladesh. 1. INTRODUCTION In today’s increasingly globalized world, the Islamic economy has been continuously evolving and requiring companies to provide products and services that meet their faith- based needs. The core two sectors that are structurally affected by this requirement of Muslim consumers are the Halal industry, which mainly comprises of food, lifestyle and travel, and the Islamic finance industry (Thomas and Selimovic, 2015).

  • Bangla Masdjid': Islão E Bengalidade Entre Os Bangladeshianos Em Lisboa

Islam is quite predominant in its political, social and cultural landscapes. While most classical and the contemporary sociologists predicted that religion would gradually fade in importance and cease to be significant with the advent of the industrial society, Bangladesh has witnessed a powerful reemergence of the religious forces in its society. In the recent years, the country has drawn enormous attention from the scholars and experts both locally and globally particularly with regard to its Islamic revivalism.

  • 'Purification of Self': Ijtema As a New Islamic Pilgrimage
-3 (SI), 2010 European Journal of Economic and Political Studies ‘Purification of self’: Ijtema as a New Islamic Pilgrimage Bulbul Siddiqi1 Abstract: Tablighi Jamaat is one of the influential and widespread Islamic movements among the Muslims around the world, which is originated in northern part of India in 1920s by Moulana Muhammad Ilyas Kandhalawi (1885–1944). It has spread to some 165 countries, including Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, its annual three-day mass congregation, commonly known as ijtema near Dhaka attracts more than five million people. Ijtema is an essential part of the Tablighi Jamaat around the world. Ijtema plays a significant role on the lives of many Muslims in Bangladesh. The huge number of engaging people in ijtema shows its popularity. Many countries also celebrate this event in a similar way. The current paper argues that ijtema provides a new idea of pilgrimage among the Muslims in Bangladesh. This paper also shows that participation in ijtema increases religious authority, status and empowerment. Finally, it examines how does ijtema contributes on the Muslim identity through the idea of brotherhood and ummah. Keywords: Tablighi Jamaat, Ijtema, Bangladesh, Ummah, Dawah, Chilla, Empowerment, Authority, Pilgrimage. 1 Cardiff University, Great Britain. [email protected] 133 Bulbul Siddiqi Introduction ijtema2 is the annual three days congregation of Tablighi Jamaat3. TJ is an Islamic reform movement that is influential and widespread among the Muslims around the world. It has a strong appeal to the South Asian Muslims and its diaspora. The immediate concern of Tablighi Jamaat is the moral reform of individuals and purification of the self, often described, as ‘making Muslims true Muslims’ and Muslims should go back to the basic principles of their faith to follow strictly the commandments of Islam in their personal lives and in their dealings with others (Sikand, 2002 and 2006).

  • Bangladesh 2015 International Religious Freedom Report
BANGLADESH 2015 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution designates Islam as the state religion but upholds the principle of secularism, prohibits religious discrimination, and provides for equality for all religions. Minority religious groups reported the government discriminated against them in property disputes. The government did not adjudicate any of the more than one million pending cases of land seized from Hindus declared to be enemies of the state before the country’s independence. Some government officials restricted religious groups they perceived as trying to convert Muslims away from Islam. In separate incidents, attackers killed five secularist or purportedly anti-Islamic writers and publishers and injured three others. Groups affiliated with al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) claimed responsibility for the killings, published lists or referred to others’ lists of bloggers as future targets, and sent a letter to media outlets warning them against publishing “antijihadi” reports or committing acts the authors considered contrary to sharia. A string of knife, gun, and bomb attacks on minority religious communities, for which Da’esh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) claimed responsibility, killed at least five people and injured scores more, garnering widespread condemnation. There were also other attacks resulting in injuries against members of minority religious groups, including Hindus, and looting of these groups’ religious sites and their members’ homes. In meetings with government officials and in public statements, the U.S. Ambassador and other embassy representatives spoke out against acts of religious violence and intolerance and encouraged the government to continue to uphold the rights of minority religious groups in line with the country’s historic tradition of diversity and tolerance.
