Message from the OSA Chair

Dear Alumni

We head into our major event time, and it has kicked off with a bash. On the 19th of September we held our Annual Dinner and once again it was an outstanding success (see Pg 11-13). With the 1984 year group celebrating their 30 year reunion, festivities where high and the good times rolled on late into the evening. The next day saw the first OSA Wine Festival (see Pg 14), which included the 5 farms owned by Alumni. For those Shaun Edmeston 1998 who came, we tasted an amazing range of wines offered by the 5 farms and experienced a tapas lunch on the deck of Higher Ground. It really was an amazing way to usher in another summer at Saints.

We have our Annual Golf Day coming up on the 14th of November (see Pg 9) and spaces are running out, so please book if you don’t want to miss this event. Also not to be missed is the opportunity to host your year-end dinners at Higher Ground. What better place to celebrate an amazing 2014 than at the Higher Ground, to take in the view, the lights and the warmth of summer.

As we look toward the end of the year and into 2015, this presents me with an opportunity to say thank you to a lot of people who have done so much this year. My Committee for a start has done an amazing job of building the brand of the OSA. We have had some great events, and will have a few more before the year is out, engage with some great people and set the plans for an exciting year ahead in 2015. The OSA App has also been launched which will keep you up to date on events, communications and news, as well as act as your Membership Card at the club.

I will have more news on updates for you in our next newsletter, including new events for next year, additions to the Membership offering, as well as the date for the Final Club Draw of the year, where we will offer another guaranteed amount.

Until then, I look forward to seeing you at Higher Ground.

Old Stithian Association APP LAUNCHED! It gives the OSA Committee great pleasure to announce the launch of the Old Stithian App for mobile.

Mobi Site : http://osa.telecode.de/mobi Android : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=za.co.digitalpeppa.eventpeppa.osa

Introduction : The Old Stithian App forms an integral part of our Membership strategy and communications roadmap going forward. Your new App is positioned as a more consistent, more accessible and less intrusive communication tool, aiding involvement and correspondence within our membership base. This launch is also a major first for an African Old Girls / Old Boys organisation and sees us form part of a select-few similar Associations globally.

The OSA mobile application has been developed to keep Alumni in touch with what is happening at the Associa- tion as well as the school at all times. By making use of Digital Peppa's Event Peppa solution, the app allows Alumni to view event details, access sporting and cultural fixtures, see our latest news, contact any of the leaders with click-to-contact facilities, receive real-time messages and view our image and video galleries. We have also integrated the OSA Membership card into the application that will allow you to replace your traditional member- ship card as well as access restricted areas in the application. Future versions of the app will allow members to make mobile payments, access advertising opportunities, showcase their products/services and much more!

About the App : We have taken a phased approached to the release of features and functionality. In the current Beta version, you will find nine sections; Events, Newsletters, Fixtures, Chapters & Teams module, Members Listing, Leadership module, a Media section for video and images, Notices, and last but definitely not least, your new Membership Card. Please take the time to download and access the App. Among some of the immediate benefits, displaying your Membership Card at the One & All, Higher Ground, and selected OSA functions will entitle you to discounts on and rewards; including 10% off drinks on Tuesdays before the dinner service.

Get the App : At launch, there are two versions of the App available; for Android, and the Mobi-Site for feature phones :

Android : As of 23 September 2014 the Android version is available from Google Play. Search for "Old Stithian" in Google Play.

Mobi Site : Visit http://osa.telecode.de/mobi, Click the Redirect Tab, Save the page to Bookmarks /Favourites iOS / Blackberry and Windows Phone : Versions for iOS, Blackberry and Windows Phone will follow over the next thirty days. In the interim we recommend users of these platforms make use of the Mobi-Site.

We look forward to your involvement.

Sincerely

Did you know? Raymond Bruce Schoeman (1970) recently donated his Honours Blazer to the OSA. He attended St Stithians Boys College from 1962-1970 and was Collins House Border. He was the first scholar to get Honours twice for Cricket, Rugby and Athletics :

Honours for Cricket in 1969 (Tvl Nuffield) and 1970. He played 1st team cricket from the end of Gr 9 to Matric.

Honours for Rugby in in Gr 11 & 12, 1969 and 1970(Craven week player representing TVL).

Honours for Athletics in 1969 and 1970. He received a few gold medals during this time and also broke the school long jump record that had been held for about 18 years or so, and it stood strong for about 20 years before Robbie Diack came along and smashed it by 20cm.

Ray was also the first Saint scholar to receive Provincial recognition in Cricket and Rugby.

Confession after 50 years!

Recollection. A story with a sting in the tail.

The time is now right, and the world is ready for the truth to be laid bare. Until a decent interval, set by the participant as being 50 years, it was not appropriate to make this disclosure. Names and events had to be hidden to protect the guilty.

You will all remember Derek Hudson – Reed, English Master, and Housemaster at Collins. Some of you might even remember, or made the acquaintance of his cane. Well, I stole it!

One term end, I slipped into his study, nicked his cane, and putting it down my trouser leg and under my jacket, walked, rather stiff legged it must be said, out of the house, and away - and through this single act of valour and selflessness, liberated the entire house from the tyranny of these unwarranted and unnecessary forms of retributive revenge. To ensure that the liberation would be permanent, I sawed the cane into small pieces, and scattered them to the four winds. The only one alert to this noble deed at the time was Martin Irish (1963), who noticed my awkward gait, and was given one of the pieces to mark the occasion, as well as to buy his silence, effectively making him an accessory after the fact as well as a receiver of stolen property.

Of course, the act was both futile and foolhardy. Very shortly into the new term, the instrument had been replaced, as it was obviously would have been, but I foolishly did not allow for at the time. The sting in the tail was simple that the new implement was a lot more supple and effective than its predecessor, and its application, as I was soon to find out, led to a more intense level of discomfort. Alas, it was a case of the biter bit, and rather than being a benefactor of all the Collins inhabitants, I materially contributed to their future unhappiness.

To anyone who still remembers this sting in the tail, I do most humbly apologize.

News cont. Letters of Mr E M (“Monty”) Harris - Order Form

“Monty” Harris was one of the first four staff members of St Stithians College in 1953. From the first few days of the College until April 1961, shortly before he died during a holiday visit to his sister Lilian in England, he recorded the early years of the development of the College in letters to Lilian. Following his death and at the request of Mr Mears, the first Headmaster of the College, Miss Harris typed up the extracts about St Stithians that Monty had written in his airmail letters. These were first issued in 1969 (volume 1: 1953 – 1956) and a second volume (1957 – 1961) followed. Few extant copies remain. The Archives copy is a signed copy that formerly belonged to Lindsay Baytopp, the first grounds- man after whom Baytopp field is named. These booklets are being made available at R130-00 for the two volume set. Funds raised from this project will go towards the development of a Living History Museum in which the history of the College can be displayed and explored in both real and virtual formats. Please Contact Mary Reynolds to order your copy at [email protected].

St Stithians Boys’ College Dux Scholars— 1956-2013

Pete Backwell, a former Boys’ College parent, as well as a former member of the BC PTA and St Stithians’ Council, has proposed a “Dux Scholar Project”. He would like to compile a book recording each of our Dux Scholars, showing what you have done with your lives since leaving the Boys’ College. Hopefully this will include some pictures and some stories you would like to share. Obviously some of you have been out of school for longer than others, and thus may have more to tell! Both Pete’s sons, Alex (2008) and David (2012), are past Dux Scholars. The idea would be to update the book regularly, and to present a copy to the Dux Scholar, and the “12 Club”, annually. It will highlight the academic side of school life, as well as what can be achieved after school. Please contact Pete on [email protected] in order for him to send you a proforma of questions, which will help us in formatting the proposed book. If you have any reservations, or queries, please feel free to contact me personally.
