THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Frank Bailey Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER No. 321 – NOVEMBER 2012 Wednesday 14 November 2012 – Meeting The Society is delighted to welcome Richard Scott to this evening’s meeting. Though his career with Hampshire was a brief one, he was one of the most popular players to appear for the County. He was a rarity, joining the staff after eye-catching performances in club cricket and for Dorset in Minor Counties cricket. RICHARD JAMES SCOTT was born in Bournemouth (which was then in Hampshire) on 2 November 1963. He made his debut for both Dorset and Hampshire 2nd XI in 1981, but was not taken onto the County staff until 1985. An aggressive left-handed opening batsman he played his first match for Hampshire at Lord’s in the Sunday League the following season. Little could he have known that he would become such an influential figure at Middlesex some twenty-five years later. The start to his first-class career in 1988 was somewhat traumatic, as he failed to get off the mark in his first three championship innings. However, he was not the first batsman, or the last, to struggle against John Lever or Devon Malcolm. However, 58 against Sussex at Eastbourne in his third match saw him on his way and three weeks later he recorded his maiden century with 107 not out against the Sri Lankans at Southampton. His most famous innings for the County, however, was a sensational Sunday League hundred against Yorkshire at Northlands Road in 1989. As Hampshire chased 180 for victory, he came to the wicket after three wickets had fallen for only 24 runs.

On the 19th of September we held our Annual Dinner and once again it was an outstanding success (see Pg 11-13). With the 1984 year group celebrating their 30 year reunion, festivities where high and the good times rolled on late into the evening. The next day saw the first OSA Wine Festival (see Pg 14), which included the 5 farms owned by Alumni. For those Shaun Edmeston 1998 who came, we tasted an amazing range of wines offered by the 5 farms and experienced a tapas lunch on the deck of Higher Ground.

SEPTEMBER 2020 2 A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT: MRS ANNE VILAS It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this edition of CGL Behind Square during the all- important Women’s Month of August. Whilst we never forget our male counterparts, we need to face the challenges of Women’s cricket, facilities and opportunities and as such our Board are looking into the creation of a subcommittee to address accordingly. We are addressing ways to increase girls’ teams at schools and clubs; as well as build awareness for women’s cricket and have a sustainable structure for training and matches. Central Gauteng Lions are also leading the Charge against gender-based-violence (GBV). Our players, coaches, staff, partners and families are all ready to voice their fight to end this. I would especially like to thank Temba Bavuma, Wandile Gwavu, Raisibe Ntozakhe and Takatso Mkhwanazi for their commitment to the cause and for their work already completed. I believe that there is an obligation by all of us to end violence against women. We need to raise our sons to respect women, to respect themselves and value human dignity. 2020 has been a year we will never forget, how our lives have changed and what will be the new normal in the future. We all need to get back to playing and watching the game we love. All the best to everyone and I hope to see you on the cricket fields in the very near future! 3 CURBING HIGH LEVELS OF FEMICIDE CENTRAL GAUTENG LIONS AND LIONS CRICKET “Imperial believes that much more can be achieved JOIN FORCES WITH POWA, IMPERIAL AND OTHER through a collaborative effort to drive the much- UNION PARTNERS TO ASSIST IN CURBING HIGH needed awareness around the challenges faced by LEVELS OF FEMICIDE women, and to provide platforms of support for those that are impacted.
