Largo Vincenzo Vela 5 T +41 58 481 30 40 [email protected] CH - 6853 Ligornetto F +41 91 647 32 41 www.museo-vela.ch The Museo Vincenzo Vela at Ligornetto (Ticino) Swiss Federal Office of Culture A – Vincenzo Vela: biography and critical fortune The Man and the Artist Born in 1820 in Ligornetto, where he died in 1891, Vincenzo Vela was among the leading sculptors of the second half of the nineteenth century. At the forefront of a renewal of sculpture in the direc- tion of realism, his art was characterized by a strong sense of citizenship and a deep human sensi- bility, as well as by the liberal ideals advanced by the Risorgimento. His active political and social commitment – as demonstrated by his participation in the Sonderbund War in 1847 and the Days of Como in 1848 – is reflected in his entire output, which reveals sincere adherence to the values and ideals supported by the subjects represented. After his brilliant education at the Brera Academy, Vela began his highly successful career first in Milan – which he left for ideological and moral reasons in order to avoid compromise with the Austrian occupier– and then in Turin, a city open to exiles at the heart of a heated and stimulating cultural and political debate. An active participant in the fertile, lively climate of renewal, including artistic renewal, that characterized the Savoy capital, he was able fully to develop his art, executing some of his most significant works, including the Alfiere (The Standard-Bearer) in Piazza Castello. Among the most sought-after sculptors of his time, from 1856 to 1867 he was also a respected professor at the Albertina Academy. -

GIULIO SAMBON MERCAntE D’ARTE ABSTRACT Avere a che fare con Giulio Sambon significa toccare molti ambiti del contesto ar- tistico dell’Italia ottocentesca. Proprio per questo motivo è difficile delineare la sua figura in una sola occasione e affrontando tutte le prospettive: in lui si fondono con- temporaneamente l’anima dello studioso, del collezionista e del mercante per tutte le discipline artistiche, dalla pittura all’archeologia. Il presente contributo propone una ricostruzione basilare di questa figura, ripercorrendo le tappe salienti della vita e dell’attività commerciale, attraverso i rapporti con collezionisti e musei milanesi e stranieri. Gli strumenti utilizzati per il lavoro sono i cataloghi d’asta della sua «im- presa di vendite in Italia», i documenti conservati negli archivi di Napoli, Roma e Fi- renze, ma soprattutto il fondo privato della famiglia Sambon custodito a Parigi presso le Archives Nationales de France. Dealing with Giulio Sambon implicates several aspects of the artistic context in Italy during the XIX century, and this is the reason why it is difficult to describe this figure through all the perspectives: the one of researcher, collector and merchant for paint- ing, sculpture and archaeology too. This essay offers a basic reconstruction of this person through the main phases of his life and commercial activity, with the most rel- evant contacts among collectors and Milanese and foreign museums. The main tools are the catalogues of the auctions managed by his «impresa di vendite in Italia», the documents in the National Archives of Naples, Rome and Florence and especially the private archive of Sambon family in Paris, Archives Nationales de France. -

MDCCC 1800 ISSN 2280-8841 Vol. 4 – Luglio 2015 Il venditore di schiave di Vincenzo Vela Dalla collezione di Pietro Mazzola alla Pinacoteca di Brera Cecilia Ghibaudi Abstract A marble representing a Merchant of Female Slaves is a work of art of Vincenzo Vela, but only its plaster cast at the Vela Museum in Ligornetto (Switzerland) was known to the historiography of the artist. It was commissioned by the doctor Pietro Maz- zola, nephew of the painter Giuseppe. A date at around 1844-1846 can be suggested on the basis of a comparison with the coeval production of the sculptor (Bishop Luvini, 1844, and The Morning Prayer, 1846) and with the works of Francesco Hayez: the Penitents Maria Magdalena, Melancholic Thoughts, the drawings and the paintings on Orientalist subjects like the harem and the odalisques.
