XIV - XV) Introduction The San Vincenzo project began in 1980, over the last twenty years this has involved excavations of the monastery itself, survey of its terra and the excava- tion of several sites in the terra1 (Fig. 1) The aims of the study of the ceramics from the monastery and its terra are to: – establish a datable type series for the early medieval period in this area which would also be an important aid to dating early medieval contexts from other sites in central southern Italy; – to shed light on the social and economic life of the monastery; – to investigate the relationship between the monastery and settlements in its terra through time; – to investigate some key questions regarding developments in central and southern Italy during the early medieval and medieval periods. Although a part of what is discussed in this paper has already been presen- ted in other publications, as the excavations progress new information continues to come to light2. Of particular importance are the well stratified groups of the late eighth and early ninth centuries from the monastery itself and twelfth cen- tury deposits from the area of the New Abbey, a preliminary synthesis of this material is presented here for the first time. * This paper is a synthesis of a more detailed article to be publisched in Archeologia Medievale. 1. A cultivator must patiently protect, water, and till the soil around the plant for fifteen years before it begins to bear fruit. Though this dissertation is not nearly as useful or palatable as the olive’s pressed fruits, its slow growth to completion resembles the tree in as much as it was the patient and diligent kindness of my friends, mentors, and family that enabled me to finish the project. This ancient land, rich in stately mountains, dense forests, lakes and historic evidences is no longer isolated, but even if still little known, it is a spot that is worth discovering, where one feels well in touch with nature. THE CHARM OF ISERNIA Since 1970 Chief Town of the Province, Isernia combines its incomparable natural beauties with the charm of a past that is lost in antiquity. 700/800,000 years ago, a tribe of Homines Erecti, a group of hunters strenuously fighting for survi- ving, decided to settle in this place rich in waters and game. Here, little by little, they built up a real urban structure, over- coming many difficulties. Isernia was a fortified Samnites centre, the Italics capital and a Roman colony. The Sannio Pentro, an area depending on rural economy and easily connecting to the road network of Lazio, Campania, Costa Adriatica and Puglia, in the days of the Emperor Augustus was assigned to the 5th Roman Legion veterans. It experien- ced a period of decay when the Roman imperial society collapsed, then it underwent, one after the other, the Lombard, Norman and Swabian dominations. A medieval bishop see, a fief and a free city under the Kingdom of Naples, it suffe- red a disastrous economical situation after the unification of Italy that forced most of its inhabitants to emigrate.

Schoolman, Scott Mensing, and Gianluca Piovesan Land Use and the Human Impact on the Environment in Medieval Italy Modern narratives about changes in the Italian landscape during the early Middle Ages have often been based on assumptions about changing demography; the loss and replacement of complex Roman economic, political, and agricultural systems; and broader changes in climate. This study focuses on the area of the Velino basin north of the city of Rieti (approximately 75 km northwest of Rome, Figure 1) at the local level. Its integration of archaeological and historical data with the reconstruction of ecological conditions derived from fossil pollen allows for a nuanced reinterpretation of human activities on the landscape. In a close examination of two discreet periods, this combination of evidence offers new insight into changes from small-scale agricultural production to a greater reliance on silvo- pastoralism (the raising of livestock within managed woodlands) driven by new economic and agricultural priorities during the late sixth and early seventh centuries. The rapid transformation and deforestation during the ninth century is associated with an inten- sification of cultivation precipitated by a long-term accumulation Edward M. During this period, communities dealt with sweeping changes brought on by political upheaval, invasion, and ecclesiastical reforms. Several inventiones written concomitantly to these events have received little scholarly attention. This dissertation has two goals: to enhance our understanding of the genre in general and to explore further the local circumstances that prompted their composition and copying. The following four case studies pertain to Christian communities in Naples, Benevento, and Larino, and the abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno respectively. This dissertation argues that, because of their “inventive” nature, these sources were powerful means of writing and rewriting history and, more often than not, the exercise of historical memory fueled their production. In particular, this dissertation contends that in eleventh-and twelfth-century southern Italy, as communities underwent the transition from Lombard to Norman authorities, the memory of the Lombard lords of the past was utilized in inventiones as a powerful tool to rewrite the identity of a community as it negotiated the changing political and ecclesiastical landscape. Furthermore, this dissertation argues that because of the devotional nature of inventiones, typically composed for use in the liturgy and thus potentially exposed to a large public, the history encoded within these sources ii was made all the more powerful.
